Objective The purpose of this study was to edit and psychometrically equate a set of Mandarin bisyllabic word lists. Methods 964 bisyllabjc words were recorded by male talker of standard Mandarin,352 words were selected to compose 10 lists. Percentage of correct word recognition was measured for each word at four intensity levels using 20 normal hearing subjects. The order of the presentation of the lists was randomized for each subject. U-sing Statistica7.0 Performance-Intensity function for each word was plotted, slopes and thresholds of them were calculated. 242 words were chosen after that, The thresholds and slopes of these words were in Guassian distribution. These words were ligitally adjusted and included in six Mandarin bisyllabic word lists of 40 words each. Two of them were for practice, four of them for test. 36 subjects with normal hearing served in our equivalent test. The orders of the presentation of the lists were randomized far each subject and results were expressed as thresholds. Results Two-factor ANO-VA was used to compare the thresholds of the 4 lists, F=1.978,P = 0.209. Conclusion These lists were considered to be primarily equivalent with each other.

BACKGROUND: Both Allergic rhinitis and bronchial asthma are allergic diseases of respiratory tract. They frequently coexist in the same patients.OBJECTIVE: To study the incidence of allergic rhinitis in patients with bronchial asthma in Nanjing, and to analyze the correlation of clinical characteristic between allergic rhinitis and bronchial asthma.DESIGN: The questionnaire survey.SETTING: Department of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and Department of Respiratory, Nanjing General Hospital of Nanjing Military Area Command of Chinese PLA.PARTICIPANTS: A total of 134 patients with bronchial asthma including 73 males and 61 females were selected form Nanjing General Hospital of Nanjing Military Area Command of Chinese PLA from February 2001 to April 2005. Their ages ranged from 3 to 72 years. Severity of asthma of all patients was classified based on Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA). The diagnostic criteria of allergic rhinitis were established referred to the guideline of Haikou Meeting (November, 1997). All patients provided the confirmed consent.METHODS: The questionnaire survey of 134 bronchial asthma patients from the city of Nanjing was conducted. Their age, classification, severity, treatment status, and the family history of all 134 patients were investigated in details. Differences of age, age at onset, and course of disease between rhinitis and asthma of all patients were examined by two independent t tests. The correlation between clinical characteristics of allergic rhinitis and bronchial asthma was analyzed by Spearman rank correlation.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES : Incidence of allergic rhinitis in patients with bronchial asthma and the correlation of clinical characteristic between allergic rhinitis and bronchial asthma.RESULTS:Of all 134 bronchial asthma patients,82(61.2%,82/134)were accompanied with allergic rhinitis. There were 45 males and 37 females.Of 82 patients with allergic rhinitis accompanying with bronchial asthma, severity was classified into grade Ⅰ (mild pause,n=56),grade Ⅱ (mild persistence,n=21),grade Ⅲ (moderate persistence,n=4),and grade Ⅳ (severe persistence,n=1).In addition, allergic rhinitis was classified into periodicity (n=65) and persistence(n=17).According to the classification and seventy system recommended in ARIA,63 patients had mild symptoms and 19 had moderate and severe symptoms.Severity of allergic rhinitis was positively related to that of bronchial asthma(r=0.689,P<0.01).CONCLUSION: The morbidity of allergic rhinitis combining with bronchial asthma is high in Nanjing, China. While, their classification and severity are highly coherent.

This study is to investigate the effect of ethyl gallate on invasion capabilities and its mechanism of breast cancer MDA-MB-231 cells. Using cell adhesion and transwell assay, separately, the effects of ethyl gallate on the invasion of MDA-MB-231 cells were measured. The Akt-NF-κB signal pathway protein expressions were analyzed with Western blot. Also, the mRNA levels of MMP-9 and MMP-2 were analyzed by RT-PCR. Ethyl gallate inhibited the abilities of motility, adhesion and invasion of breast cancer MDA-MB-231 cells in vitro (P<0.05), inhibited the mRNA levels of MMP-9, MMP-2, phosphorylation of AKt and protein expression of NF-κB. It is concluded that ethyl gallate can inhibit the abilities of invasion of breast cancer in vitro by inhibiting the mRNA levels of MMP-9/MMP-2, phosphorylation of Akt and protein expression of NF-κB.

Journal of Southern Medical University 2008;28(9):1696-1699
OBJECTIVETo investigate the changes in stress hormones in neurogenic pulmonary edema (NPE) and explore the clinical value of mild hypothermia therapy for treatment of NPE.
METHODSFifty-two patients with cerebral hemorrhage patients and concomitant NPE were randomly divided into two groups for local mild hypothermia therapy (23 cases, LMH group) or routine treatment (29 cases, RT group). In the former group, local mild hypothermia therapy was applied in addition to the routine treatment. The changes of serum corticotrophin-releasing hormone (CRH), adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), corticosteroid (Cor), arginine vasopressin (AVP) and blood sugar were observed before and 7 days after the treatment, and compared with those of 58 NPE-free patients with cerebral hemorrhage and 40 healthy individuals.
RESULTSSerum CRH, ACTH, Cor, and AVP levels and blood sugar in NPE patients and the NPE-free patients were all significantly higher than those in the healthy individuals (P<0.01), and the levels were significantly higher in NPE patients than in the NPE-free patients (P<0.05). In the NPE patients, the mortality rate and NIHSS score were significantly lower in RT group (P<0.01); after 7 days of treatment, both LMH and RT groups showed significant reduction in serum CRH, ACTH, Cor, and AVP levels (P<0.05), and the reduction was more conspicuous in LMH group (P<0.05).
CONCLUSIONThe occurrence of NPE is closely associated with stress reactions, which might be the basis of NPE. Local mild hypothermia therapy improves of the quality of life of NPE patients and also decreases the mortality of NPE possibly by inhibiting the secretion of stress hormones and stabilizing the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis.

Acta Pharmaceutica Sinica 2008;43(3):295-298
To synthesize aristolochic acid (AA)-2'-deoxyguanosine 5'-monophosphate (dGp) adducts in vitro and develop a novel method for the characterization of the adducts using multiple mass spectrometric techniques. AA was incubated with dGp in vitro using either enzymatic activation (by xanthine oxidase) or chemical activation (by zinc) to synthesize AA-dGp adducts, and the reaction conditions were optimized. Crude extracts were analyzed by techniques of liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization/tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and high accuracy mass data and isotope pattern of super high resolution Fourier transform-ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICRMS). The quasi-molecular ion peaks of the AA-dGp adducts were obtained in the negative ion mode. Analysis by electrospray ionization/tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-MS/MS) provided useful structural information about AA-dGp adducts. AA can bind covalently to the exocyclic amino group of deoxyguanosine to form AA-dGp adducts. MS analysis is a powerful tool to detect and identify AA-dGp adducts simply, rapidly and accurately.
