OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the perinatal prognosis of fetuses with a single umbilical artery. METHODS: From 1992 to 1998, nineteen cases with single umbilical artery(SUA) was observed in 8,704 deliveries at Chonnam University Hospital. RESULTS: Out of nineteen fetuses, thirteen fetuses with single umbilical artery were detected by antenatal ultrasonographic examination and six fetuses were detected after birth. The male to female ratio was 0.9: 1. Congenital malformations were observed in 8 babies(42.1%) and included leg deformity, esophageal atresia, imperforated anus, ventriculomegaly, meningocele, hydronephrosis, ventricular septal defect, joint contracture, cleft lip and palate, toe anomaly, imperforated anus, kyphosis, no urethra and testis, clubfoot, patent ductus arteriosus and rnild mitral regurgitation. Among 10 cases of karyotyping analysis three cases were diagnosed as trisomy 18. Fourteen fetuses(77.8%) showed growth restriction at delivery. Antenatal obstetric complications were hydramnios(n = 3), oligohydramnios(n =2), and severe preeclampsia(n = 3). CONCLUSION: Careful ultrasonographic evaluation for the identification of a SUA is necessary because of its frequent association with congenital anomaly, growth restriction and cytogenetic abnormality.

PURPOSE: Asthma is an important worldwide pediatric public health problem and rapidly increasing prevalence has been reported. Environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) is known to be an important aggravation factor of asthma. The aim of this study was to determine whether ETS exposure is associated with exacerbations of asthma, and therefore to define the possibility of improving illness by cessation of smoking. METHODS: One hundred one (101) asthmatic children who visited and followed up at Korea university hospital pediatric allergy clinic were enrolled. Their chart was reviewed retrospectively and their family members were also interviewed. RESULTS: Sixty nine patients were exposed to ETS and thirty two patients were not exposed. Among exposed group (n=69), fourteen patients were no longer exposed due to cessation of smoking. The difference in the number of hospital admissions between exposed group and non-exposed was statistically significant (P=0.002). But the difference in the number of emergency room visits and PFT value (FEV1, PEFR, FEF25-75%) between the two groups was statistically insignificant. Statistical relationship between the duration of ETS and number of hospital admissions was significant (Pearson Correlation Coefficient=0.243, P=0.015). Comparing current smoking group and smoking cessation group, differences in out-patient clinic follow up period, number of hospital admissions, and number of emergency room visits between the two groups were statistically insignificant. CONCLUSION: We found that ETS exposure is associated with exacerbations of asthma. Possibility of improving illness by reduction of ETS exposure indicates the significance of education for cessation of smoking.

The Korean Society of Health-System Pharmacists (KSHP) and Korean Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (KSPEN) jointly performed a nation-wide questionnaire survey on the current state of Nutrition Support Team (NST) activity from March to May of 2016. The aim of the survey was to suggest ways to develop NST as well as to improve the relationship between the KSHP and KSPEN. Compared to the results of the 2005 survey, some progress was made in the activity of NST over the last decade. Not only was the activity of NST settled, but quantitative and qualitative growth was also achieved by activating rounds and regular meeting. On the other hand, the ratio of hospitals providing home care services has decreased. Therefore, further effort is needed for their revitalization.
