There had been a continuous evolution of lymphoma classification and recently a Revised European-American Lymphoma Classification was proposed by the International Lymphoma Study Group. This new classification often requires information on immunophenotypic and molecular biologic markers in addition to the usual histologic findings. Recent advances in the production of commercially available monoclonal antibodies reactive on formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues provide us a great help to classify the non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. We have analyzed 31 low grade B-cell lymphomas by the schemes proposed by the International Lymphoma Study Group using antibodies to CD3, CD5, CD20, CD23, CD43, cyclin D1, and bcl-2 protein, and have analyzed the immunophenotypic features. Among 31 low grade B-cell lymphomas, 8 small lymphocytic lymphomas, 5 mantle cell lymphomas, 7 follicle center lymphomas (2 grade I, 3 grade II, and 2 grade III), and 11 marginal zone B-cell lymphomas (all of which were extranodal) were identified. Among 8 small lymphocytic lymphomas, 5 cases were positive for CD5; 6 cases were positive for CD23; 7 cases were positive for CD43; all 8 cases were negative for cyclin D1; and 7 cases were positive for bcl-2. Among 5 mantle cell lymphomas, 4 cases were positive for CD5 and CD43; all five cases were negative for CD23; 4 cases were positive for cyclin D1 and bcl-2. All 7 follicle center lymphomas were negative for CD5, CD43 and cyclin D1 and 2 cases were positive for CD23; and 6 cases were positive for bcl-2. All marginal zone B-cell lymphomas were negative for CD5, CD23 and cyclin D1; 3 cases were positive for CD43 and 9 cases were positive for bcl-2. Diagnostic utility for CD5 antigen detection on paraffin embedded tissue has a limitation due to weak antigen expression in tumor cells of B-cell lymphomas; however, still be useful in differentiating small lymphocytic lymphoma and mantle cell lymphoma from other B-cell lymphomas when applied in conjunction with CD43. CD23, CD43, and cyclin D1 appear to be of great help in differentiating subgroups of low grade B-cell lymphomas. Bcl-2, as known, is found to be useful to rule out reactive follicular hyperplasia.

BACKGROUND: The smoking rate of Korean male workers is top in the world. To establish the effective smoking cessation strategy, we conducted a study to evaluate the factors associated with smoking and smoking cessation. METHODS: We surveyed 509 male workers in a university hospital about age, marital status, drinking, exercise level and checked their awareness and seriousness for diseases due to smoking, benefits from smoking cessation, motivation derived from massmedi and books and their will to quit smoking by self-administerd questionnaire. RESULTS: The significant factors associated with smoking cessation were higher education (OR=1.85, 95% CI 1.26-2.74), non-religion (OR=0.56, 95% CI 0.38-0.83), drinking (OR=0.40, 95% CI 0.27-0.61), awareness (OR=1.30, 95% CI OR=1.03-3.25) and seriousness (OR=1.29, 95% CI 1.19-1.39) for smoking related disease, benefit (OR=1.21, 95% CI 1.16-1.27), and barrier (OR=0.78, 95% CI 0.74-0.83), motivation (OR=1.21, 95% CI 1.12-1.30), and the will to quit smoking (OR=1.70, 95% CI 1.56-1.85). CONCLUSION: This study suggested that effective smoking cessation program should be based on awareness and seriousness due to smoking related diseases, health benefit and barrier to quitting smoking, company's support, the individual's will to quit and various motivation methods.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the web-based nutrition counseling on the dietary behavior and food intake of hyperlipidemic patients and to evaluate the web-based nutrition counseling program. Forty hyperlipidemic patients, twenty of them were hypercholesterolemia and the other twenty were hypertriglyceridemia, participated in the web-based nutrition counseling program. At the first nutrition counseling, the patients were interviewed and then follow-up nutrition counselings were accomplished four times during eight weeks through a web-based internet program. The web-based nutrition counseling program was consisted of diet management, nutrition education and nutritional assessment and the follow-up counseling program. The dietary behavior score increased significantly in both groups after the nutrition counseling program(p<0.01). The diet therapy knowledge score also increased significantly (p<0.01). For food frequency, vegetable (p<0.01), fruit (p<0.05) and seaweed (p<0.01) consumption increased significantly, while meat (p<0.01), egg (p<0.01), snack (p<0.01) and instant food (p<0.01) intake decreased significantly in both groups after the nutrition counseling program. The evaluation of the web-based nutrition counseling program by the patients showed above average in all domains, specially the evaluation scores of younger aged patients habituated to practice computer were better than those of older aged patients. Therefore, this study shows that the web-based nutrition counseling program is effective for improving dietary behavior and food consumption the patients. In addition, these results indicate that internet presents us with potential as a new medium for nutrition counseling in informationized society.

PURPOSE: This study was done to describe level of knowledge and performance of pain management by nurses in general hospitals. METHODS: The study was conducted from August 1 to 28, 2014 with 141 nurses from a general hospital in B city. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson correlation coefficient with SPSS 20.0. RESULTS: Average correct response rate for knowledge was 62.7%, indicating poor knowledge of pain management. Mean score for knowledge of pain management was 31.33+/-3.24 out of 50(general knowledge about pain 14.02+/-2.18 out of 20, knowledge on use of analgesics 9.21+/-1.97 out of 20, knowledge on analgesic classification 8.16+/-1.00 out of 10). Mean score for performance of pain management was 3.19+/-.44 out of 4. There was significant difference in knowledge of pain management by age. Performance of pain management differed significantly according to age and type of working unit. No significant relationship was found between knowledge and performance of pain management. CONCLUSION: These findings show that nurses who have good knowledge do not always have good performance of pain management. Therefore, it is necessary to develop new strategies to promote performance as well as continued pain management education to increase ability of nurses to manage pain.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate factors influencing clinical competence in nursing students. METHOD: The participants were 125 nursing students and data were collected from October 8 to December 18, 2010 using questionnaires with. Collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient and stepwise multiple regression. RESULTS: There were significant correlations for creativity, problem-solving ability, self-directed learning ability, and clinical competence. The factor influencing clinical competence the most was creativity, followed by problem-solving ability, self-directed learning ability, and grade point average score. The regression model explained 37% of variance in clinical competence. CONCLUSION: The results indicate that for improvement in the clinical competence of nursing students, it is necessary to develop strategies and education programs to enhance creativity, problem-solving ability, and self-directed learning ability.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the teaching effectiveness and clinical learning environment on the clinical practice competency in nursing students. METHOD: Undergraduate nursing students (268) enrolled in one of 4 universities in 2 cities completed a survey questionnaire. Collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficient and multiple regression with the SPSS/Win 11.0 program. RESULTS: The mean score for teaching effectiveness was 3.09 (+/-.53) on a 5-point scale, for clinical learning environment, 3.09 (+/-.50) on a 5-point scale, and for clinical practice competency, 3.94 (+/-.52) on a 6-point scale. Significant positive correlations were found between teaching effectiveness and clinical learning environment, and clinical practice competency. The regression model explained 8.8% of clinical practice competency. Teaching effectiveness and clinical learning environment were significant predictors of clinical practice competency. CONCLUSION: The findings of the study suggest that teaching effectiveness and clinical learning environment be considered when developing strategies to increase clinical practice competency in nursing students.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to identify Korean high school students' health behaviors and perceived stress and to examine effects of their health behaviors on their stress perception. METHODS: The subjects were 33,744 high school students who participated in the 11th Korea youth risk behavior web-based survey 2015 in Korea. Data were analyzed using complex samples analysis with the PASW 18.0 program. The questionnaire utilized in this study is designed to find the subjects' general characteristics, health behaviors, and perceived stress. RESULTS: The prevalence of subjects with high level stress was 38.9%(n=13,137) in this study. There were significant differences in the general characteristics and stress perception among the Korean high school students in terms of gender, grade, school achievement, family's affluence, mother's education, perceived happiness, perceived health status, and stressor. The variables of health behaviors of Korean high school students were significantly different from stress perception. Under complex samples logistic regression, predictive factors of stress for the high school students include gender, grade, father's education, family's affluence, living arrangement, perceived health status, perceived happiness, current smoking, current alcohol experience, and enough sleep. CONCLUSION: The study suggests multilateral efforts are needed to help high school students' stress management including health behaviors for high school students.

Purpose: In adults with chronic diseases, unmet healthcare needs are likely to increase the risk of worsening the illness and complications. This study was conducted to explore factors affecting unmet healthcare needs among adults with chronic diseases. Methods: A cross sectional study was performed using the data from the seventh Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES Ⅶ), 2016-2017. The sample of this study consisted of 6,104 adults with chronic diseases. The data were analyzed by Rao-Scott x2 test and logistic regression using complex samples analysis. Results: The proportion of subjects who experienced unmet healthcare needs was 10.9% of adults with chronic diseases. The factors affecting unmet healthcare needs of adults with chronic diseases were age, gender, employment status, household income, subjective health status, activity limitation, and perceived stress. Conclusion The findings of this study suggest that various factors may be associated with their unmet healthcare needs. Finally, the development of strategies to reduce unmet healthcare needs for people with chronic diseases should consider the associated factors presented in the study.
