PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to show the effect of walking exercise on physiological index, physical fitness, self-esteem. depression. and life satisfaction in institutionalized elderly women aged over 70. SAMPLE AND METHOD: Data were collected from subjects who consented to participate in this program for eight weeks from the 2nd of July to the 27th of August 2005. The subjects were divided into two groups, 26 subjects in the experimental group who had walking exercise and 30 in the control group who did not have walking exercise. The intensity of the walking exercise allowed 50-65% of the maximum heartbeat. RESULTS: The results of the experiment supported the hypothesis that the experimental group would have higher flexibility, left grip strength, sense of equilibrium, self-esteem and life satisfaction and lower depression than the control group. CONCLUSION: Walking exercise has the effect of decreasing diastolic blood pressure together with improvement in flexibility, left grip strength, sense of equilibrium, self-esteem, depression and life satisfaction for institutionalized elderly women aged over 70. According to the results presented above, walking exercise can be strongly recommended for improving the health of institutionalized elderly women.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to verify the effects of music therapy on subjective stress response, salivary cortisol and fatigue for nurses working in intensive care unit (ICU). METHODS: This study employed non-equivalent control group pretest–posttest design on quasi experimental basis. Subjects were 52 nurses (26 experimental and control group respectively) who have been working at ICU of Gil Hospital in Incheon, Korea. Data were collected from August 4 to October 6, 2014. Experimental group have listened to their 4-7 favorite musics individually once for 30 minutes after day-work. RESULTS: In experimental group, subjective stress response (t=5.02, P<0.001), salivary cortisol (t=2.08, P=0.042), and fatigue (t=5.66, P<0.001) have decreased significantly comparing to the control group. CONCLUSIONS: This study has confirmed especially through objective physiological index of salivary cortisol that listening the favorite music for nurses in ICU was an effective and objective managerial measure to resolve their job stress and fatigue.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship among self-efficacy, depression, life satisfaction and death attitude of college students. METHODS: The subjects consisted of 232 college students. Data were collected by self-reported questionnaires, which were constructed to include self-efficacy, depression, satisfaction with life, and death attitude. Data were analyzed by the SPSS/PC WIN. 12.0 program. RESULTS: Death attitude and life satisfaction of college students were significantly different according to frequency of death ideation. Death attitude for college students correlated with self-efficacy, depression, and life satisfaction. The most significant predictor of death attitude for college students was life satisfaction. CONCLUSION: The above findings indicate that death attitude for college students is influenced by self-efficacy, depression, and life satisfaction. These findings suggest that a death education program to improve life satisfaction and to give a positive attitude toward death is needed for college students.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the level of life satisfaction and the significant factors which impact on life satisfaction of young-old (60-69 yr), old (70-79 yr), and oldest-old (80 yr or above) women. METHODS: The participants for this study were 289 elderly Korean women living in the city of Daegu and Kyongpook province. The data were collected using structured questionnaires. ANOVA, Chi-square, and multiple regression with the SPSS program were used to analyze the data. RESULTS: There were statistically significant differences among young-old, old, and oldest-old women regarding the existence of spouse, income, educational status, and religions. The model including variables related to physical, psychological, financial, and social aspects of life, explained variance of life satisfaction of elderly women differently, such as 55% of young-old, 37% of old, and 66% of oldest-old. Finally, self-esteem was the only predictor in explaining the level of life satisfaction among old women regardless age. CONCLUSION: Based on the findings of the study, implications for practical services for elderly women and recommendations of further study are provided. Nursing interventions should be developed to improve life satisfaction of elderly women according to age differences.

Purpose: Pathologic lesions may occur in an axillary accessory breast (AAB). This study aimed to evaluate the characteristics of tumors arising from AABs and to recommend appropriate treatment. Methods: This retrospective study involved 3,544 women (18–65 years old) with AAB at Damsoyu Hospital in Korea from 2014 to 2023. The patients were divided into an AAB with benign tumors (TAAB) group and an AAB without tumors (AAB) group, and the tumors’ pathologies were reviewed. A core biopsy was performed on tumors with possible malignancy identified by preoperative ultrasonography. All patients underwent complete excision of accessory mammary gland (AMG) tissue, including tumors. The postoperative results were checked 6 months after surgery. Results: Fifty-two out of 3,554 patients had tumors confirmed by preoperative ultrasonography. Preoperative core biopsies were performed on 11 patients. Two patients had malignant tumors (invasive ductal carcinoma) identified by core biopsy.Fifty patients had benign tumors identified by postoperative pathological analysis (46 fibroadenomas, 2 fibrocystic changes, and 2 sclerosing adenoses). Carcinoma in situ was confirmed in 2 patients using postoperative pathological analysis. No patients in either group developed tumors in the axilla during the follow-up period. All patients were satisfied with the axillary pain relief and the disappearance of bulging lesions. Conclusion We recommend a core biopsy if preoperative ultrasonography indicates a possibly malignant tumor. AAB patients may experience tumors, pain, and bulging appearance of an AMG; thus, complete AMG excision is necessary.

PURPOSE: This study was done to identify the retention effects of a basic life support training program for nursing students on their attitude, knowledge, and skillfulness. METHODS: A one-group repeated posttest design was employed for this study. The subjects included 44 junior nursing students from Gachon University in Incheon. Data were collected by a structured questionnaire test immediately after, 3 months after, 6 months after, and 9 months after the training respectively from May 2014 through March 2015. RESULTS: The respective attitude, knowledge and skillfulness score on BLS of the nursing students had reduced significantly at 3 months after (p<.001), 6 months after (p<.001), and 9 months after (p<.001, p=.011 for Attitudes) the training compared to immediately after the training. CONCLUSION: Re-training on basic life support for nursing students should be implemented within 3 months for retention of educational effects. Thus, it is recommended that basic life support training programs, including a curriculum for nursing students, is developed to support re-training. And it is expected that the improved skills of nursing students on basic life support would contribute to the successive first aid nursing for patients at risk of cardiac arrest.

A nosocomial outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 occurred in two general wards. One outbreak had pre-symptomatic transmission and was linked epidemiologically with an index case. The other outbreak was associated with early detection failure in a crowded room. Notably, adherence to appropriate mask wearing was not confirmed in the hospital outbreak. Confirmed cases were moved into isolation rooms, and contacts were quarantined. Quarantined cases were tested regularly and facilitated early termination of the hospital outbreak.
