One of the most remarkable medical achievements of the Korean War was the development of psychiatry. During the Korean War, soldiers and prisoners of war (POWs) experienced “gross stress reaction” and manifested poor concentration and memory as well as clinical depression and social alienation. Rest and relaxation rotations served as the primary treatment for their conditions. Civilians also bore the brunt of the war’s effects. Delusions of grandeur and megalomania appear to have been common among Koreans, but there were few mental health facilities to provide treatment and care. Out of the furnace of war, psychiatry emerged as a newly specialized field, and in the 1950s, Korea became the very place where military psychiatry training under the U.S. military laid the groundwork for civilian psychiatry. This essay aims to enrich the study of mental illness during and after the Korean War by providing a more detailed picture of the mental problems experienced not only by veterans and POWs, but also by civilians in Korea. Examining mental health issues from this period is challenging due to the scarcity of resources for delving into the minds of the civilians involved. Taking military psychiatry as a starting point, this essay goes beyond existing scholarship to discuss psychiatry-related responses to the Korean War, including the influence of military psychiatry on civilian psychiatry, the endeavors of medical professionals and government policies, and contemporary expressions of mental distress during and after the war.

A bronchial obstruction of the remaining lung is a rare complication of thoracic surgery. We report a case of this rare complication after a right upper lobectomy due to a giant bulla. Post-resectional angulation of the bronchus intermedius caused the bronchial obstruction. An intrabronchial stent was inserted into the bronchus intermedius, which relieved the obstruction.

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma can involve the gynecologic tract, most often as a manifestation of systemic involvement. Primary lymphomas of the female genital tract are rare. Most involve the cervix rather than the uterine corpus. All of those previously reported have been B-cell lymphomas, with the exception of several case reports. Primary T-cell lymphoma of the uterine cervix is rare. We describe a rare case of primary cytotoxic T-cell lymphoma of the uterine cervix, Ann Arbor stage IE in a 55-year-old woman. The tumor, incidentally disclosed at gynecological examination, appeared as diffuse cervical enlargement with mucosal erosion. A biopsy was taken and showed diffuse infiltration of variable sized lymphoma cells. Neoplastic cells were positive for LCA, CD3, TIA-1 and consistent with cytotoxic T-cell lymphoma. She was treated with 3 cycles of cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisolone(CHOP). After chemotherapy, the patient was treated by pelvic external radiation therapy. At present, the patient is well and disease-free.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of self-esteem and social support on the depression stati of some clinical nurses, and propose basic data for a depression care program. METHODS: Between March 31 and April 5 at 2006, a self-reporting questionnaire survey was administered to 200 nurses at a general hospital located in Gyeonggi-do. The Beck's Depression Inventory (BDI) was used to assess the subjects'depression stati. RESULTS: The average BDI score of the clinical nurses was 8.9+/-7.5, with 59% belonging to the normal category, 28% having mild depressive symptoms, and 13% with a moderate degree of depressive symptoms. The degree of depression was significantly increased in the clinical nurses with a lower self-esteem and less social support. The degree of depression was significantly increased in the clinical nurses with a lower self-esteem and less social support. According to a multivariate regression analysis, a significant association was found between self-esteem and social support in relation to the depression of clinical nurses. The effect of social support was found to not be significant in cases where the self-esteem was high: however, depression was significantly influenced by social support in cases where the self-esteem was low. CONCLUSION: Self-esteem and social support were observed to influence the depression stati of clinical nurses. Therefore, it is suggested that an increase in depression management programs is required to create systematic management to maintain an atmosphere of high self-esteem and close relationships to manage the depression of clinical nurses.

PURPOSE: In this study, we evaluated the associations between intraocular pressure (IOP) and systemic and socioeconomic factors. METHODS: A population-based cross-sectional study using a nation-wide, stratified, multistage, clustered sampling method included 15,421 subjects aged ≥20 years with no history of ocular surgery or glaucoma who participated in the Korean National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey 2008-2011. RESULTS: Univariate regression analyses showed statistically significant linear relationships between IOP and body mass index (BMI), smoking status, heavy drinking, systolic blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, total cholesterol, triglycerides, insulin, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), metabolic syndrome (p < 0.001, respectively), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (p = 0.003), refractive error (p < 0.001), and office work (p = 0.029). In addition, analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed statistically significant differences in IOP and refraction according to occupation (p < 0.001, all). CONCLUSIONS: We concluded that increased IOP was associated with age, BMI, heavy drinking, systolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, and refraction. There were statistically significant differences in IOP and refraction according to occupation.

PURPOSE: Helicopter parenting is an emerging concept as a way of rearing adolescents and adult children. However, helicopter parenting from a nursing perspective has not been elucidated. Therefore, we undertook a concept analysis to understand the attributes, antecedents and consequences of helicopter parenting in the context of nursing. METHODS: Using Rodgers' evolutionary concept analysis, we analyzed literature on helicopter parenting to discover critical attributes, antecedents, and consequences of this phenomenon. Data were collected from seven electronic search engines. Twelve studies matching inclusion criteria were reviewed RESULTS: Three core attributes of helicopter parenting were hovering, highly deep involvement, and proxy decision making. The antecedents and consequences were retrieved from three important domains including social, parent, and child aspects. Surrogate terms were black hawk, hummingbird, and hovercraft parenting, and related terms were stealth fighter and Kamikaze parenting. CONCLUSION: Based on the results of this study, helicopter parenting has both positive and negative effects on both children and parents. To enhance the positive effects, measurement tools for helicopter parenting and nursing interventions on parenting need to be developed.

There are many problems in the anesthetic management of patients with scar contracture. In this case, a 41-year-old male with severe scar contracture on his face, neck, anterior chest, and both shoulders underwent surgery for resurfacing with flaps. We tried to awake fiberoptic orotracheal intubation with GlideScope(R) Video laryngoscope guide after surgical release of contracture under local anesthesia. We report a successful management of a patient with severe burn contracture achieved by combined effort of surgeons and anesthesiologists.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the effects of caloric restriction on thigh intermuscular adipose tissue (IMAT) and the associations of IMAT and metabolic risk factors. METHODS: Thirty-three obese Korean women (BMI 27.2+/-2.5 kg/m2; 32.3+/-8.7 years) were tested before and after 12 weeks of 354.7 kcal/day dietary caloric restriction: waist circumference (WC); %fat according to bioimpedence; subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT); visceral adipose tissue (VAT); IMAT using single-slice CT scans at the levels of L4/L5 and mid-thigh (midpoint between the anterior iliac crest and patella); fasting levels of leptin, glucose, insulin, triglycerides, total-C, LDL-C, HDL-C, and HOMA-IR. Paired t-test and Spearman correlation analysis were performed. RESULTS: WC, %fat, leptin, glucose, total-C, abdominal SAT and VAT, and mid-thigh IMAT decreased (P<0.05), and %change in mid-thigh IMAT correlated with %change in HOMA-IR (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Caloric restriction decreased the mid-thigh IMAT in obese Korean women, which may be correlated with reduction of metabolic risk.

A traumatic pulmonary pseudocyst is a rare complication of blunt thoracic trauma. The clinical symptoms and signs are similar to other respiratory diseases, such as pulmonary tuberculosis. Therefore, a trauma history with the resulting radiologic and clinical findings is important for making a diagnosis. A 26-year-old male was admitted to our hospital due to cough for 3 days. The chest x-ray revealed diffuse infiltrations and a cavitary lesion at the left lung. His left chest had hit a tree as a result of motorcycle accident one day before admission. Initially, it was assumed that his symptoms and chest X-ray might be due to a tuberculosis infection. However, bronchoscopy revealed old blood clots at both lungs, particularly in the left lower lobe bronchus. A transbronchial lung biopsy showed alveolar hemorrhage. A traumatic pulmonary pseudocyst was diagnosed from his trauma history and these findings. Computed tomography of the chest performed 4 months later showed regression of the cavitary lesion.
