PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors that influence children's mental health state. METHODS: The subjects were 127 boys and 132 girls in the 5th and 6th grades of elementary school. Data were collected through Child Problem-Behavior Screening Questionnaire, Parental Behavior Rating Scale, Conflict Tactics Scales, Self-Esteem Scales, and Index of Peer Relations. Subjects were divided into the risk group and normal group of the mental health state by the scores of CPSQ and were analyzed by chi2 test, t-test, and logistic regression using SPSS/WIN 14.0. RESULTS: The risk group was 70.3% and normal group was 29.7% of the subjects. Self-esteem, peer relationship, and academic achievement were important factors influencing children's mental health state. CONCLUSION: Results of this study suggest interventions to improve self-esteem, peer relationship, and academic achievement for promoting children's mental health state.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to examine the effects of cognitive behavior therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) based on the mobile social networking service (SNS) on dysfunctional beliefs and attitudes about sleep, sleep quality, daytime sleepiness, depression, and quality of life among rotating-shift nurses in a hospital in Korea. METHODS: A nonequivalent control group pre-post test design was used. The participants included 55 nurses with rotating three-shift work (25 in the experimental group and 30 in the control group). For the experimental group, CBT-I using mobile SNS was provided once a week for 60 minutes over six weeks. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, χ²-test, independent samples t-test, and Mann-whitney U test with the SPSS 21.0 program. RESULTS: In the homogeneity test of the general characteristics and study variables, there were no significant differences between the two groups. Nurses in the experimental group had significantly lower scores on dysfunctional beliefs and attitudes regarding sleep and sleepiness than nurses in the control group. Nurses in the experimental group had significantly higher scores on sleep quality and quality of life than nurses in the control group. CONCLUSION: These findings indicate that using the mobile SNS-based CBT-I is feasible and has significant and positive treatment-related effects on rotating-shift nurses' irrational thoughts and beliefs in association with sleep, sleep quality, daytime sleepiness, and quality of life. These contribute to expanding our knowledge of rotating-shift nurses' sleep issues and their preferences for intervention.

If orthodontists and restorative dentists establish the interdisciplinary approach to esthetic dentistry, the esthetic and functional outcome of their combined efforts will be greatly enhanced. This article describes satisfying esthetic results obtained by the distribution of space for restoration by orthodontic treatment and porcelain laminate veneers in uneven space between maxillary anterior teeth. It is proposed that the use of orthodontic treatment for re-distribution of the space and the use of porcelain laminate veneers to alter crown anatomy provide maximum esthetic and functional correction for patients with irregular interdental spacing.

Tumor thrombus in the portal vein without any liver parenchymal abnormality is extremely rare. In the liver, the primary tumor most frequently presenting with intravascular tumor thrombi is hepatocellular carcinoma and lymphoma is rarely considered. Even though thrombosis occurs quite often in lymphoma, cases of tumor thrombus are rare and cases of tumor thrombus in the portal vein are even rarer. Only four cases of lymphoma with portal vein tumor thrombosis have been reported to date and all cases were the result of direct extensions of a dominant nodal or extra-nodal mass. To our knowledge, there has been no report on diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) presenting only within the lumen of the portal vein and not intravascular B-cell lymphoma. We present the first case of DLBCL presenting only within the lumen of the portal vein in an immunocompetent patient.

BACKGROUND: The Elecsys hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) II quantitative assay is a newly introduced electrochemiluminescence immunoassay incorporating an initial 1:400 onboard dilution and a simple algorithm to determine HBsAg levels in serum. We evaluated the performance of the Elecsys HBsAg II assay and determined the impact of its initial onboard dilution on laboratory efficiency. METHODS: HBsAg levels were determined using both Roche Elecsys and Abbott Architect HBsAg assays. Linearity and precision of the Elecsys HBsAg II assay and its correlation with the Architect HBsAg assay were evaluated. In particular, precision was verified at Samsung Medical Center, Severance Hospital, Seoul St. Mary's Hospital in Seoul, using the same pooled serum controls. The efficiency of the dilution algorithm for both methods was verified using data from 1,848 clinical samples. RESULTS: The Elecsys HBsAg II assay showed a good linearity from 0.1 to 48,000.0 IU/mL and a good correlation (r=0.9998) between expected and measured values. Precision analyses performed at Samsung Medical Center, Severance Hospital, Seoul St. Mary's Hospital showed excellent performance with coefficients of variation between 1.28% and 6.82%. The values of the Elecsys HBsAg II and Architect HBsAg assays were well correlated (n=506, r=0.987, P<0.001) and also reliably determined in hepatitis C virus- and hepatitis B virus-co-infected patient sera (n=27). In terms of efficiency, 64.0% of samples provided a final HBsAg result on the first run without the need for further dilution, when using the 1:400 onboard pre-dilution protocol of the Elecsys HBsAg II assay. CONCLUSIONS: Given the excellent precision and correlation with the Architect assay, the Elecsys HBsAg II assay showed a potential advantage for laboratory efficiency by significantly reducing the need for retesting samples with high HBsAg levels.

BACKGROUND: It is necessary to exercise in Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) patients but it's difficult because of their physical condition and little motivation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of the walking exercise program on health status in CAPD patients. METHODS: A nonequivalent control group with pre- and post-test was designed to examine the effects of the program. Data collection was done from December, 2002 to June, 2003. The study participants were selected according to the criteria among the patients who were receiving CAPD at the department of Kidney Center, NIHC Ilsan hospital. The walking exercise program was consisted of an exercise education protocol, an exercise prescription, and a counselling protocol based on a framework of self-efficacy promotion. The exerciser group which was composed of 19 participants was educated based on an exercise education protocol and carried out walking exercise for two to four times a week upon taking verbal persuasion biweekly through telephone or face-to-face interview for 12 weeks, while 17 participants in control group were received no intervention. RESULTS: There was significant differences between two groups; the exerciser group showed better physical function (p=0.03), higher VO2 max (p=0.01) and higher serum albumin level (p=0.02) than the results of control group. However, there were no differences in lipid metabolism. CONCLUSION: The walking exercise program was found to have an effect to increase health status of CAPD patients. The results provided evidences for the importance of continuous physical activity in CAPD patients.

PURPOSE: To determine the characteristics of benign breast calcifications on mammogram. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Benign breast calcifications on mammograms of 25 patients, which were confirmed by needle localization and excisional biopsy(15 cases), cytology(1 case), or follow-up study(9 cases), were retrospectively analysed according to size, shape, number, distribution, and density. RESULTS: The size of benign breast calcifications was uniform in 4 cases (16%), and variable in 21 cases (84%). The shape of calcifications was round or oval in 18 cases(72%), linear or branching pattern in 6 cases (24%), and irregular in 1 case(4%). The number of calcifications was 2-5 in 7 cases(28%), and over 6 in 12 cases(48%). The distribution of calcifications was focal in 13 cases(52%) and diffuse in 12 cases(48%). The density of calcification was homogenous in all 25 cases(100%). CONCLUSION: Analysis of number, shape, size, and distribution is helpful for the diagnosis of benign breast calcifications. However the homogenous density of the calcification is suggested to be the most helpful criterion for the diagnosis of benign breast calcifications.
