1.A morphometric analysis of maxillary central incisor on the basis of facial appearance in Korea.

PURPOSE: We aimed to identify a more esthetic width-to-length ratio by analyzing maxillary central incisor of Korean adult population. Information regarding tooth ratio in the Korean population may be useful to clinicians when restoring anterior teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 40 men and 40 women were included in this study. The NON-MEDIA group included 40 non-celebrities, who were healthy and 25 to 39 years old, with normal dentofacial appearance. The MEDIA group consisted of 40 celebrities selected only on the basis of their soft-tissue facial appearance. The facial photographs of 40 celebrities were collected from the Internet websites. The width and length of the maxillary central incisor were measured using Adobe Photoshop(R) 7.0, a software for analysis, measurement and edition of photographs. Data were analyzed statistically using the Independent t-test at 5% statistical significance level. RESULTS: The mean ratio for the MEDIA group was 0.77, whereas that of the NON-MEDIA group was 0.88. The difference between the two groups was statistically significant. No significant gender differences were found in the width-to-length ratio in MEDIA group. In NON-MEDIA group, however, there were significant differences between female and male. CONCLUSION: After analyzing maxillary anterior teeth of Korean adults, our results were in accordance with the general Western standards of esthetics. A dentist restoring the natural look and beauty of teeth will have to consider those standards.

3.Early MRI Finding of Femoral Head in Traumatic Hip Dislocation.

Traumatic dislocation of the hip presents serious problems that may lead to avascular necrosis, nerve palsy, post-traumatic arthritis even when reduction is promptly and adequately carried out. Among them avascular necrosis is the most important prognostic factor, so the early detection of this complication has critical significance for final result. Bone scan has been considered one of early diagnostic test, but recently MRI replaced its role for imaging in the detection of early AVN, treatment monitoring and prediction of prognosis. Authors prospectively studied the early finding of MRI to detect avascular necrosis of the femoral head and to predict prognosis in traumatic hip dislocation and fracture-dislocation. From December 1990 to November 1994, 12 case of dislocation and fracture-dislocation of the hip were studied . In follow up period ranging from 19 months to 65 months, 10 case had excellent or good result. All cases had abnormal MRI finding such as paraarticular edema, capsular bulging, joint effusion, femoral head fracture, but findings such as femoral head signal changes were dectected in only 3 cases. Among the 3 cases, 1 case had developed AVN and 2 cases were uneventful. Other complications were 3 cases of posttraumatic arthritis, 2 cases of incomplete sciatic nerve palsy, and 1 case of heterotrophic ossification. Although early MRI finding at posttrauma 2weeks gave less specific information, it could give good information for risk group and follow up control with more cases. Although it is expensive, MRI can be one of the most reliable reference in early diagnosis of AVN and prediction of prognosis in traumatic dislocation and fracture- dislocation of the hip with non-invasive method.

4.Current Status of Three-Dimensional Printing Inks for Soft Tissue Regeneration.

Recently, three-dimensional (3D) printing technologies have become an attractive manufacturing process, which is called additive manufacturing or rapid prototyping. A 3D printing system can design and fabricate 3D shapes and geometries resulting in custom 3D scaffolds in tissue engineering. In tissue regeneration and replacement, 3D printing systems have been frequently used with various biomaterials such as natural and synthetic polymers. In tissue engineering, soft tissue regeneration is very difficult because soft tissue has the properties of high elasticity, flexibility and viscosity which act as an obstacle when creating a 3D structure by stacking layer after layer of biomaterials compared to hard tissue regeneration. To overcome these limitations, many studies are trying to fabricate constructs with a very similar native micro-environmental property for a complex biofunctional scaffold with suitable biological and mechanical parameters by optimizing the biomaterials, for example, control the concentration and diversification of materials. In this review, we describe the characteristics of printing biomaterials such as hydrogel, synthetic polymer and composite type as well as recent advances in soft tissue regeneration. It is expected that 3D printed constructs will be able to replace as well as regenerate defective tissues or injured functional tissues and organs.

Background: Spontaneous pneumopericardium is a very rare condition. Spontaneous pneumothorax and pneumomediastinum have been reported to be associated with an idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). However, spontaneous pneumopericardium has not yet been reported in association with IPF. Here we report a case of spontaneous pneumomediastinum and pneumopericardium in a patient with acute exacerbation of IPF with a review of the relevant literature.

7.Expression of E-cadherin in pig kidney.

E-cadherin is a cell adhesion molecule that plays an important role in maintaining renal epithelial polarity and integrity. The purpose of this study was to determine the exact cellular localization of E-cadherin in pig kidney. Kidney tissues from pigs were processed for light and electron microscopy immunocytochemistry, and immunoblot analysis. E-cadhedrin bands of the same size were detected by immunoblot of samples from rat and pig kidneys. In pig kidney, strong E-cadherin expression was observed in the basolateral plasma membrane of the tubular epithelial cells. E-cadherin immunolabeling was not detected in glomeruli or blood vessels of pig kidney. Double-labeling results demonstrated that E-cadherin was expressed in the calbindin D28k-positive distal convoluted tubule and H(+)-ATPase-positive collecting duct, but not in the aquaporin 1-positive, N-cadherin-positive proximal tubule. In contrast to rat, E-cadherin immunoreactivity was not expressed at detectable levels in the Tamm-Horsfall protein-positive thick ascending limb of pig kidney. Immunoelectron microscopy confirmed that E-cadherin was localized in both the lateral membranes and basal infoldings of the collecting duct. These results suggest that E-cadherin may be a critical adhesion molecule in the distal convoluted tubule and collecting duct cells of pig kidney.

8.A Case of Pulmonary Sequestration with Pleural Effusion.

Congenital pleural effusions are uncommon. The majority of cases are due to chylothorax, hydrops fetalis, and infection. Effusions of this nature are, for the most part, self-limited. We experienced a rare case of a congenital unilateral pleural effusion due to an extralobar sequestraion with pulmonary lymphangiectasia. Pleural effusion was found by antenatal ultrasonography and confirmed by CT scans and CT angiography of the chest in the neonatal period. The patient underwent an open thoracotomy where extralobar sequestraion located between the diaphragm and the left lower lobe was removed. His postoperative course was uncomplicated and there was complete resolution of the pleural effusion.
