PURPOSE: The aim of this retrospective study is to analyze the relationship between local factors and survival rate of dental implant which had been installed and restored in Seoul Veterans Hospital dental center for past 10 years. And when the relationship is found out, it could be helpful to predict the prognosis of dental implants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study of patients receiving root-shaped screw-type dental implants placed from January 2000 to December 2009 was conducted. 6385 implants were placed in 3755 patients. The following data were collected from the dental records and radiographs: patient's age, gender, implant type and surface, length, diameter, location of implant placement, bone quality, prosthesis type. The correlations between these data and survival rate were analyzed. Statistical analysis was performed with the use of Kaplan-Meier analysis, Chi-square test and odds ratio. RESULTS: In all, 6385 implants were placed in 3755 patients (3120 male, 635 female; mean age 65 +/- 10.58 years). 108 implants failed and the cumulative survival rate was 96.33%. There were significant differences in age, implant type and surface, length, location and prosthesis type (P<.05). No significant differences were found in relation to the following factors: gender, diameter and bone quality (P>.05). CONCLUSION: Related factors such as age, implant type, length, location and prosthesis type had a significant effect on the implant survival.

Globally, viral hepatitis due to hepatitis B virus (HBV) and/or hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is the major cause of advanced liver diseases such as liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Chronic inflammation resulting from persistent viral hepatitis is also associated with an increased risk of HCC recurrence. Replication of HBV and/or HCV can reactivate during anti-cancer treatments of HCC and lead to hepatic dysfunction, adversely affecting patient outcomes. The most effective way to prevent chronic viral hepatitis, cirrhosis, or HCC would be the implementation of a vaccine. Unfortunately, a vaccine for HCV is currently not available. For chronically infected patients, antiviral therapy may be the only option that can prevent or retard disease progression. Emerging evidence continues to support direct or indirect benefits from antiviral therapy for preventing liver disease progression to cirrhosis, HCC development, and recurrence after curative treatments in patients with chronic HBV or HCV infection. This paper reviews the literature on the management of viral hepatitis in patients with HCC, focusing on primary and tertiary prevention of HCC.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the displacements of cast framework by torch soldering and electric soldering techniques. Specimen had two cylinders and connecting bar that had sectioned with 0.3mm gap at mid point. 10 of total specimens were divided into two groups. In torch soldered group, soldering investment block was made and conventional torch soldering procedure was carried out. In electric soldered group, electric soldering was carried out on the master cast without soldering investment block by using electric soldering machine(Dentapunkt DP 7, Kulzer, Germany). After soldering procedure, three dimensional coordinates of two centroids of each cylinder were measured by three dimensional coordinate measuring machine. The intercentroidal displacement and global displacement were calculated and then, these values were compared and evaluated. The results were obtained as follows: 1. Intercentroidal distances of specimens decreased after both soldering procedures, and the decrease in intercentroidal distance was greater for torch soldered group than for electric soldered group 2. Reactivation of hepatitis B virus (HBV) has been well documented as a complication in HBV surface antigen (HBsAg) carriers who receive cytotoxic or immunosuppressive therapy. With the recent introduction of newer agents with a high level of immunosuppressive effect, this unfavorable event often occurs in patients with HBsAg-negative and/or occult HBV infection. The first step in HBV reactivation management is the identification of the patients at risk of viral reactivation by testing for HBV serology prior to commencing immunosuppressive treatment or chemotherapy. Multiple publications have consistently indicated the benefit of prophylactic or preemptive antiviral therapy in this setting, and justified such approach before the start of cytotoxic therapy. Unresolved issues concerning such prophylactic approach remain in the situations of HBsAg-negative/anti-HBc-positive or negative status, which presumably consists of a large number of occult HBV infection cases. This topic review will summarize clinical issues related to HBV reactivation, focusing clinical manifestations, risk factors associated with HBV reactivation, and a growing body of evidence supporting preventive antiviral therapy in high-risk patients.
