PURPOSE: This study was conducted in order to determine the extent of ego integrity and to confirm the association between the sense of ego integrity and integrated loneliness, social support, and social activities. METHODS: For this study, 146 elderly people participated. The data was analyzed with SPSS/WIN 21.0, using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, correlation analysis, and hierarchical regression analysis. RESULTS: In regards to differences between ego integrity according to general characteristics of subjects, there was a statistically significant difference in education (F=4.13, p=.007). In elderly living alone, ego integrity was significantly positive correlated with social support and social activities, but negative correlated with loneliness. These variables explained 43.2% of the sense of ego integrity. CONCLUSION: The study suggested that nursing programs and social activity programs designed to aid the elderly living alone must focus on reducing loneliness, as well as increasing social support and social activities, while taking education into consideration. Also, these programs should strive to build social support systems.

BACKGROUND: Herpes zoster with generalized varicelliform eruptions occurs in 2 to 10% of patients with herpes zoster. It occurs mainly in old or debilitated persons especially those who have immunologic defects such as lymphoproliferative diseases, AIDS, or recipients of immunosuppressive therapy. The reported incidence of herpes zoster with generalized varicelliform eruptions is variable. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to elucidate the incidence and clinical features of herpes zoster with generalized varicelliform eruptions. METHODS: We reviewed the clinical data of 962 patients with herpes zoster by retrospective methods. The annual incidence, age, sex, seasonal variation, predilection sites, and associated conditions of herpes zoster with generalized varicelliform eruptions were analyzed from January 1990 to December 1996 (7 years). RESULTS: 1. Among 962 patients, 8 patients with herpes zoster revealed generalixed varicelliform eruptions (0.83%). 2. The age ranged from 20 to 85 and the majority of cases occurred in the 6th decade. There were 4 females and 4 males. 3. Past histories of malignancy were observed in 2 patients. However, there were no signs of malignancy at the time of diagnosis of herpes zoster with generalized varicelliform eruptions. 4. The most common site of initial lesion was the thoracic dermatome,followed by the lumbar and the cervical ones. CONCLUSION: From our observation, it is suggested that herpes zoster with generalized varicelliform eruptions may occur in patients without underlying malignancy or immunosuppressive disorders. Sudden incidental uprising of herpes zoster with generalized varicelliform eruptions was observed in 1996.

BACKGROUND: Systemic arterial hypotension is relatively common following initiation of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Decreased blood viscosity is induced by acute normovolemic hemodilution (ANH) and by the use of crystalloid oxygenator prime. The purpose of this paper is to study the effect of ANH on mean arterial pressure, perfusion flow index and PaO2/FiO2 upon initiation of CPB, and on homologous blood usage during CPB in coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery. METHODS: We reviewed 30 patients constituting an ANH group, and 30 patients in a control group who had undergone CABG surgery within the past 2 years. In the ANH group, 1 or 2 units of fresh autologous whole blood were sequestrated following induction of anesthesia. We compared mean arterial pressure, perfusion flow index, PaO2/FiO2, and hematocrit on the initiation of CPB, and homologous blood usage during and post CPB periods between the groups. RESULTS: Upon initiation of CPB, hematocrit in the ANH group was significantly less than in the control group, but there was no significant difference in mean arterial pressure, perfusion flow index or PaO2/FiO2 between the groups. The use of homologous blood during CPB in the ANH group was not significantly higher than in the control group. CONCLUSIONS: Acute intraoperative normovolemic hemodilution in CABG surgery was safely performed without significant hypotension and increased homologous blood usage during CPB.

PURPOSE: This study was a descriptive study to compare symptoms, depression and the quality of life according to stages of survivorship in lung cancer patients. METHODS: Data were collected from April 1st to September 30th 2016. The subjects of this study were 135 lung cancer patients who were outpatients or inpatients at a university hospital. The instruments used were the MDASI-LC (M.D. Anderson Symptom Inventory-Lung Cancer), the Korean CES-D (Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression) and FACT-L (Functional Assessment Cancer Therapy-Lung) version 4. RESULTS: Insensibility/numbness (F=-2.42, p=.016) and trouble walking (F=-2.21, p=.029) symptom scores were significantly higher in the acute survival stage (less than 2 years) than the overextended survival stage (more than 2 years). But there was no significant differences in depression and quality of life between survival stages in lung cancer patients. CONCLUSION: Lung cancer patients of more than 2 survival years should be managed for relief symptoms such as insensibility/numbness and trouble walking cautiously.

We report computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) findings of a patient with polyostotic Paget disease and multicentric giant cell tumor (GCT). Brain CT scan showed widening of diploic space, cortical thickening and enhancing soft tissue mass in occiput with underlying calvarial destruction. Ill-defined soft tissue masses were also detected in maxillary sinus and buttock with underlying bony destruction on CT. MR image showed multifocal nodules in wide diploic space with low signal intensity on T1 -weighted image and bright signal intensity on T2-weighted image. Mass in occiput showed homogeneous hypointensity to bone marrow on T1-weighted image and homogeneous iso- intensity on T2-weighted image. Multiple nodules in diploic space and occipital mass showed contrast enhancement following administration of Gd-DTPA. Biopsy was performed at scal p, maxillary sinus and buttock, and histologic analysis revealed GCT.

Neurilemmomas of the trachea are extremely rare. The most common site of them is the distal third of the trachea and the age of the patients at presentation varied from 6 to 78 years old. They usually have a freqeuntly very long natural history, causing symptoms only after they have attained a considerable size. We experienced a case of near-total obstruction of the trachea by an intraluminal sessile neurilemmoma. The patient was a 66-year-old man with 2-year history of progressive exertional dyspnea and had several episodes of pneumonitis associated with productive cough. Grossly, the tumor was a well-circumscribed mass. Microscopically, typical cellular Antoni A and myxoid Antoni B areas were revealed.

BACKGROUND: In an effort to use cigarette warning labels as a means for reducing smoking rates, this study examined current cigarette warning messages and newly designed pictorial warning labels. METHODS: From June 15, 2005, to June 22, 2005 we conducted an e-mail survey of 1,200 civilians to examine the effect of cigarette warning labels. For statistical analysis, we used chi-square test with SPSS 11.0 software. RESULTS: Among all the respondents, 78.7% indicated that current cigarette warning labels did not have any effect. However, most of the respondents indicated that pictorial warning labels are effective in raising public awareness (84.6%) or knowledge (81.5%) of the harmful effects of cigarettes. They also responded that pictorial warning labels would help them quit smoking (75.9%) or keep them from buying cigarettes (64.1%). Over 80% of the respondents and over 70% of the smokers responded that they would welcome the use of pictorial warning labels as an anti-smoking measure. CONCLUSION: The results of this study showed that current cigarette warning labels are not effective in curbing smoking rates. Also, the results suggest that current cigarette warning labels need to be improved if they are to be used as an effective anti-smoking measure.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to elucidate the effects of spiritual nursing intervention on anxiety and depression of the hospice patients. METHOD: It was devised with a quasi- experimental design using non-equivalent control group pre-post design. The data was from July 10 to September 25 in 2000 at the general hospital in CheonJu city. Subjects were 37 members of the experimental group and 30 members of the control. The tools were used Spielberger's State Anxiety Scale and Zung's Depression Inventory. The spiritual nursing intervention was carried out through Hymn, Scripture, Prayer, the therapeutic ues of self. Data were analyzed by mean, standard deviation, x2-test, t-test. RESULT: 1. After the spiritual nursing intervention, state anxiety of the experimental group was lower than those of the control (t=-5.987, p=0.000). 2. After the spiritual nursing intervention, depression of the experimental group were lower than those of the control (t=-9.128, p=0.000). CONCLUSION: The hospice patients who were offered spiritual nursing intervention had lower anxiety and depression than not offered it. According to these results, it can be regarded as an effective one that relieved anxiety and depression of the hospice patients.

PURPOSE: We conducted a descriptive study to identify the factors affecting peripheral neuropathy in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. METHODS: Data were collected from 131 cancer patients who underwent chemotherapy at two university hospitals in D city from January to July in 2018. The instruments used were the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer-Chemotherapy Induced Peripheral Neuropathy 20 (EORTC-QLQ CIPN 20), International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), nutrition and eating habits, and Hospital Anxiety & Depression Scale (HADS). RESULTS: Factors influencing peripheral neuropathy in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy were gender (β=−0.34, p=.005), basal cold hypersensitivity in the hands and feet (β=0.29, p<.001), depression (β=0.27, p=.002), and diabetes (β=0.23, p<.001). The explanatory power of the model was 41.1%. CONCLUSION: Based on the results of the study, it is necessary to plan nursing interventions for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy with peripheral neuropathy by considering gender, cold hypersensitivity in the hands and feet, depression, and diabetes.

Purpose: This study aimed to determine the effects of grit, nursing work environment, and job esteem on the intent to stay among military hospital nurses. Methods: This study employed a descriptive cross-sectional design. Data were collected from February 7 to 18, 2022 from 232 nurses working at four military hospitals under the Armed Forces Medical Command. The analysis was conducted using the SPSS/WIN 26.0 program, and descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson coefficient correlations, and multiple regression analysis were performed. Results: Factors affecting the intent to stay included job esteem (β=.44, p<.001), total clinical experience of more than 10 years (β=.24, p=.001), and nursing work environment (β=.17, p=.009). Conclusion The results can be used to ensure personnel quality at military medical institutions and can contribute to improving patient safety and medical services. Further, nursing managers need to formulate and implement strategies to foster a positive nursing work environment.
