Parovarian cysts constitute 10% of adnexal masses. They were found in broad ligament and mostly arise from mesothelium and less commonly from paramesonephric element and rarely from mesonephric element. In most cases parovarian cysts were asymptomatic. So, they were found incidentally at surgery for other conditions. Torsion is infrequent and it is difficult to distinguish it from torsion of other adnexal masses, appendicitis, etc. Recently, we experienced a voluminous parovarian cyst undergoing torsion, 25 cm in diameter. The case is presented with a review of literature.

Condyloma acuminatum is a manifestation of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. The genital warts tend to occur in areas most directly affected by coitus, namely external genitalia, perineum and perianal areas. The warts are highly contagious; more than 75% of sexual partners develop when exposed. The warts frequently increase in number and size during pregnancy, sometimes filling the vagina or covering the perineum, making it difficult to perform vaginal delivery or episiotomy. Probably small number of infants and children born of women with genital warts will become infected and develop laryngeal papillomatosis. We have experienced one case of huge condyloma acuminatum during pregnancy and presented with a brief review of literature.

Blue nevus of the uterine cervix is a rare benign pigmented lesion consisting of dermal melanocytes in the stroma. It is similar to those of common blue nevus of the skin. Most of these are clinically or colposcopically unsuspected and an incidental finding often found in hysterectomy specimens. The case here was incidentally found in surgical pieces after hysterectomy in 43-year-old women performed for leiomyoma. We report a case of blue nevus of the uterine cervix with a review of the literature.

Cervical pregnancy is a rarely life-threatening form of ectopic pregnancy in which the implantation of the developing conceptus in the cervical canal. The cervix is composed predominantly of the fibrous tissue. Therefore cervical pregnancy can be massive hemorrhagic occurrence from the eroded blood vessels within the cervical tissue. In the past, as a result of life-threatening hemorrhage, the diagnosis of a cervical ectopic pregnancy frequently led to hysterectomy. Currently, several conservative treatments are possible with the hope of preserving future reproductive potential, including preoperative uterine artery embolization before dilatation and evacuation. We report a case of cervical pregnancy which was treated sucessfully with preoperative selective uterine artery embolization before dilatation and currettage.

OBJECTIVES: To analyze differences in health behaviors among the social strata in Korea by using the 1995 National Health and Health Behavior Survey Data. METHODS: Study participants numbered 2,352 men and 1,016 women aged between 15-64 years old, with housewives, students and non-waged family workers excluded. Health behaviors in this study were defined according to the recommendations of the Alameda 7 study. The measure of health behaviors was based on the Health Practices Index(HPI; 0-5 range, with the exclusion of snacking between meals and regularly eating breakfast) developed by the Alameda County research. The significance of the relationship between social strata and HPI was assessed by considering the adjusted means from the multi-variate model. RESULTS: For men, incidence rates of never having smoked, no/moderate use of alcohol, regular exercise, and regular 7-8 hours sleep per night were higher in the upper social strata. Meanwhile, for women, incidence rates of never having smoked, no/moderate use of alcohol, appropriate weight, regular exercise, and regular 7-8 hours sleep per night were higher in the upper strata. HPI varied significantly among social strata in both sexes (p<0.001), a result which held true when adjusted for age, education, income, social insurance type, marital status and region. CONCLUSIONS: Health behaviors assessed by Health Practices Index(HPI) varied significantly among social strata for both sexes. Therefore, the existing gap in health behaviors among social strata can be corrected more effectively by target oriented health promotional activities.

Sarcoma is a malignant tumor originated from bone, cartilage, fat tissue, nerve, blood vessel, bone marrow, endothelium, etc. and for this reason it exhibits considerable variation not only clinical but histologic appearance. Osteosarcoma occurs chiefly in young persons and in patients older than 40 years it is usually associated with Paget's disease, irradiated bone, multiple hereditary exostosis or polyostotoc fibrous dysplasia and sometimes with preceding trauma. Radiographically it is divided into three forms: an osteoblastic or sclerosing type, an osteolytic type, and mixed type. Histologically it is divided into osteoblastic type, chondroblastic type, fibroblastic type. The treatment of osteosarcoma is radical excision, combined chemotherapy but the prognosis is poor and overall 5-year survival rate is 20-40%. We present two different type sarcomas of 22-year-old male and 56-year-old male patients which we performed surgical excision, combined chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

Abdominal pregnancy is a rare form of extrauterine pregnancy which is account for 1.4% of all ectopic pregnancy cases. Among these omental pregnancy is extremely rare and may cause life-threatening massive hemorrhage as a complication. But the diagnosis of early abdominal pregnancy is difficult because of non specific findings about clinical history, physical examination and ultrasonography. Risk factors related to ectopic pregnancy include inflammation, infection and surgery, but endometriosis is an uncommon factor. We present a case of the ruptured primary omental pregnancy associated with endometriosis with a review of the literature.

OBJECTIVES: To examine whether the nursing practice environment at the hospital-level affects the job satisfaction and turnover intention of hospital nurses. METHODS: Among the 11 731 nurses who participated in the Korea Health and Medical Workers' Union's educational program, 5654 responded to our survey. Data from 3096 nurses working in 185 general inpatient wards at 60 hospitals were analyzed using multilevel logistic regression modeling. RESULTS: Having a standardized nursing process (odds ratio [OR], 4.21; p<0.001), adequate nurse staffing (OR, 4.21; p<0.01), and good doctor-nurse relationship (OR, 4.15; p<0.01), which are hospital-level variables based on the Korean General Inpatients Unit Nursing Work Index (KGU-NWI), were significantly related to nurses' job satisfaction. However, no hospital-level variable from the KGU-NWI was significantly related to nurses' turnover intention. CONCLUSIONS: Favorable nursing practice environments are associated with job satisfaction among nurses. In particular, having a standardized nursing process, adequate nurse staffing, and good doctor-nurse relationship were found to positively influence nurses' job satisfaction. However, the nursing practice environment was not related to nurses' turnover intention.

PURPOSE: Interest in the augmentation of hair growth for functional and aesthetic purpose has increased dramatically in recent years. Many hair growth products have been released, but most of these have not been proven scientifically. This study aims to measure the hair growth effect of azelaic acid and vitamin B6, which have been known as hair growth materials, in animal models. METHODS: Six weeks old C57BL/6 mice were used in this study and hair of mice were removed by topical treatment. The mice were divided into five experimental groups according to the testing material such as saline (negative control), propylene glycol(vehicle control), azelaic acid, vitamin B6 and azelaic acid plus vitamin B6 in combination. Hair growth was documented photographically and histologically, and then analysed by the high quality hair analysis program system. The quantity of endocrine factors, IGF-I and TGF-beta1 in the skin of mice was measured by PCR analysis. RESULTS: The topical treatment of azelaic acid and vitamin B6 in combination for 2 weeks to dorsal skin accelerated hair regrowth more than other groups. The azelaic acid and vitamin B6-combined treatment also promoted hair follicle elongation and thickness compared to the others. Histologic studies showed increased number of basal cells in azelaic acid and vitamin B6-combined treatment. Furthermore, the azelaic acid and vitamin B6-combined group significantly increased the expression of IGF-I but decreased the expression of TGF-beta1 in the skin of mice compared to other groups. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that azelaic acid and vitamin B6, when used together, have an additive effect and might be used as hair growth materials.
