1.Workplace Response System Against Infectious Disasters based on the MERS Outbreak in Korea.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the workplace response system (WRS) against infectious disasters (IDs) based on the response attitudes and capacity of occupational health nurses (OHNs) who worked during the 2015 Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) outbreak in South Korea. METHODS: Fifty-one participants who had worked as OHNs at the time of the 2015 MERS outbreak were surveyed from November 20 to December 10, 2016. Data were collected using a self-report questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics and McNemaer's test. RESULTS: According to the survey results, the following were lacking in the WRS: a dedicated ID-response team, manuals, related education programs for OHNs, and health education programs for workers. Results also confirmed that workers were vulnerable to new infectious diseases because of the lack of health checkups and support for workers before and after business trips abroad. Among the respondents, 98.0% answered affirmatively that an ID was important for health management in the workplace, but 64.7% answered that it was difficult to manage an ID. The perceived capacity items to respond to IDs ranged from 3.0 points to 3.3 points. This scores weregenerally high. CONCLUSION: As the WRS is currently insufficient, it is necessary to develop an adequate WRS to IDs by addressing the identified problems.

2.The effects of self-directed learning ability, critical thinking, and learning commitment from utilizing the Havruta method in women’s health nursing classes

Purpose:
The purpose of this study was to construct the education applying the Havruta method for nursing students and to investigate the effects on self-directed learning ability, critical thinking, and learning commitment.
Methods:
A nonequivalent control group pre-posttest design was used. The participants were 63 nursing students (experimental group, n=31; control group, n=32) at two universities. The experimental group received education applying the Havruta method for five weeks. The study was conducted from September 1 to November 30, 2022. The data were analyzed using IBM SPSS 27.0 for an χ2 test, Fisher’s exact test, independent t-test, and Mann–Whitney U-test.
Results:
The experimental group had a significant increase in self-directed learning ability (z=-2.13, p=.033). However, there was no significant difference in critical thinking competency (t=0.64, p=.524) and learning commitment (t=0.04, p=.969) between the two groups.
Conclusion
The Havruta method is an effective nursing education tool for self-directed learning ability. The result of this study could be a guide for nursing professors in designing and implementing educational programs that apply the Havruta method. In the future, research that applies the Havruta method and evaluates its effectiveness in nursing education programs should be continued.
3.Expression of tumor necrosis factor receptor superfamily in carotid atheroma.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: It has been reported that various inflammatory and immune reactions are involved in the development and progression of atherosclerosis. We tried to investigate whether the TNF receptor superfamilies are involved in the development and progression of atherosclerosis. MATERIALS AND METHOD: Thirteen carotid atheroma specimens(frozen sections : 10 cases, paraffin section : 5 cases) were obtained from the patients who underwent carotid endarterectomy at Samsung Medical Center and one normal aortic tissue was obtained from a transplantation donor in brain death. In the carotid endarterectomy specimens and a normal aortic tissue , the expressions of R110(TR1), 139(TR2) and DR3(TR3), members of the TNF receptor superfamilies were evaluated by immunohistochemical staining with monoclonal antibodies. Simultaneously, we evaluated the expressions of foam cells, smooth muscle cells, T-lymphocytes and B-lymphocytes. RESULTS: Immunohistochemical analysis identified a strong expressions of foam cells and smooth muscle cells in all atheroma. But, the expression of T-lymphocytes was minimal and that of B-lymphocytes was rare. The expression of DR3(TR3) was seen in all atheroma as strongly positive. The expression of 139(TR2) was observed well in frozen sections, but not in paraffin sections. Whereas, that of R110(TR1) was observed in paraffin sections as weakly positive, but not in frozen section. The areas where the TNF receptor superfamilies were expressed correlated to the area of foam cell presence. The expression of DR3 also correlated with expression of smooth muscle cells. In normal aortic tissue, the expression of inflammatory cells or TNF receptor superfamilies was not observed except smooth muscle cells which were observed in normal artery. CONCLUSION: Foam cells and smooth muscle cells were abundantly present in atheroma. The TNF receptor superfamilies are expressed in the atheroma and the region of expression was coincident with the presence of foam cells.

6.Squamous Cell Carcinoma Occurring at the Site of an Arteriovenous Fistula Ulcer:A Case Report

Marjolin’s ulcer is a malignant skin tumor that arises at the site of scars, chronic ulcerations, inflammations, and fistulas after a long latent period. These tumors are mostly squamous cell carcinomas; however, other types of malignancies, such as basal cell carcinoma, malignant melanoma, and sarcoma rarely occur. Marjolin’s ulcer have aggressive characteristics, and local recurrence and lymph node metastasis rates are higher than those of cutaneous primary tumors. Herein, we report an unusual case of squamous cell carcinoma at the site of an arteriovenous fistula ulcer treated with repeated radical operation and skin graft.
7.The Effects of Different Intensity of Aerobic Exercise for Four Weeks on Cardiovascular Risk Factors, Reactive Oxygen, and Antioxidant Enzymes in Old Mice

Purpose:
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of different intensity of aerobic exercise for four weeks on cardiovascular risk factors, reactive oxygen, and antioxidant enzymes in old mice.
Methods:
Eighteen male C57BL/6 mice age 18 months were randomly classified into the control group (n=6), the moderate intensity exercise group (n=6), and the low intensity exercise group (n=6). The training groups performed the aerobic exercise twice daily for 20 minutes, five days weekly for four weeks. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, analysis of variance (ANOVA), the Chi-square test, and the Tukey’s test with the SPSSWIN 21.0 program.
Results:
In this study, among the risk factors of cardiovascular disease, blood sugar (BS) (p=.023) and total cholesterol (TC) (p=.001) were significantly different between the moderate intensity exercise group and the control group. Additionally, there were significant differences in the reactive oxygen malondialdehyde (MDA) (p=.001), the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD) (p<.001) and glutathione reductase (GR) (p=.015) between the moderate intensity exercise group and the control group.
Conclusion
This finding suggests that moderate intensity aerobic exercise promotes the activity of antioxidant enzymes and lowers cardiovascular risk factors in older mice.
8.Factors Influencing the Experience of Depression among School-aged Children from Multicultural Families.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate factors affecting the experience of depression in school-aged children from multicultural families. METHODS: Data from 1,812 school-aged children of multicultural families were collected from the 2015 National Multicultural Family Survey. Logistic regression was conducted based on complex sample analysis using SAS 9.4. RESULTS: Significant predictors for experiencing depression were lower self-esteem, lower Korean proficiency, less time spent conversing with the father, lower degree of parental interest, poorer school adjustment, greater difficulties with schoolwork, and experiencing violence at school. CONCLUSION: This study showed that factors related to the individual, family, and school environment influenced the experience of depression. Based on a consideration of these factors, it is necessary to develop an effective program to prevent depression by establishing high-risk criteria for depression.

9.Comparative evaluation of the mutagenicity and genotoxicity of smoke condensate derived from Korean cigarettes.

OBJECTIVES: Cigarette smoking is associated with carcinogenesis owing to the mutagenic and genotoxic effects of cigarette smoke. The aim of this study was to evaluate the mutagenic and genotoxic effects of Korean cigarettes using in vitro assays. METHODS: We selected 2 types of cigarettes (TL and TW) as benchmark Korean cigarettes for this study, because they represent the greatest level of nicotine and tar contents among Korean cigarettes. Mutagenic potency was expressed as the number of revertants per μg of cigarette smoke condensate (CSC) total particulate matter whereas genotoxic potency was expressed as a concentration-dependent induction factor. The CSC was prepared by the International Organization for Standardization 3308 smoking method. CHO-K1 cells were used in vitro micronucleus (MNvit) and comet assays. Two strains of Salmonella typhimurium (Salmonella enterica subsp.enterica; TA98 and TA1537) were employed in Ames tests. RESULTS: All CSCs showed mutagenicity in the TA98 and TA1537 strains. In addition, DNA damage and micronuclei formation were observed in the comet and MNvit assays owing to CSC exposure. The CSC from the 3R4F Kentucky reference (3R4F) cigarette produced the most severe mutagenic and genotoxic potencies, followed by the CSC from the TL cigarette, whereas the CSC from the TW cigarette produced the least severe mutagenic and genotoxic potencies. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study suggest that the mutagenic and genotoxic potencies of the TL and TW cigarettes were weaker than those of the 3R4F cigarette. Further study on standardized concepts of toxic equivalents for cigarettes needs to be conducted for more extensive use of in vitro tests.
