BACKGROUND: Oral allergy syndrome(OAS) is composed of it,ching sense and edema in oral cavity, lips, throat, pharynx, and larynx following eating some fresh fruits or vegetables. It has been known that most of patients with OAS are allergic to pollens. Common epitopes were found among pollens, fruits and vegetables. Although OAS is a common farm of food allergy in adults, this is the first epidemiologic study of OAS in Korea. MATERIAL AND METHOD: One hundred and fifty one patients who showed positive skin reaction to pollens were telephone-interviewed. Investigation of the prevalence and clinical manifestations of OAS was possible in 81 patients. RESULT: The prevalence of OAS among these patients was 34.6% (28/81). OAS was found in 24(48%) out of 50 patients sensitized to tree pollens, whereas 4(13%) of 31 grass or weed pollen-sensitized paients had OAS. Most common causative food was apple and all of 17 apple- OAS patients were sensitized to tree pollens. Peach was the second common food and 14 of 15 peach-OAS patients were sensitized to tree pollens. Besides oral symptoms, rhinitis, asthma, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting or generalized urticaria were accompanied in half of the OAS patients (14/28). Some patients showed OAS to some unique Korean foods such as dropwort, taro and Aster. CONCLUSION: OAS was very common in pollen-sensitized patients. Larger epidemiologic studies are needed to find unique Korean foods and their antigensm causing OAS.

In orthognathic surgery to obtain proper functional and esthetic form after skeletal discrepancy treatment, precise diagnosis and treatment plan are essential. Especially in two jaw surgeries that have serious upper and lower jaw problems, maxilla and mandible are arranged in three dimensions. Based on the maxillary rearrangement, mandibular sagittal and transverse position are determined, and thus new occlusal plane is established. The object of this study is to evaluate the stability of the individual ideal occlusal plane based on the architectural and structural craniofacial analysis of Delaires. The subjects of this study were 48 patients who underwent two jaw surgeries, and they were equally divided into two groups. A and B. A group was operated with ideal occlusal plane and B group was not. Two groups were compared at the preoperative, immediate postoperative (average 4.3days). and long-term postoperative (average 1.3years) lateral cephalometric radiographs. The following results were obtained : 1. ANS was lower than that of PNS for both A and B after the surgery. That is, maxilla and mandible are rotated in posterior and superior direction. 2. Significances were found between T2 and T3 for both a and B are HRP-Me at vertical measurements, articular angle(p<0.01), gonial angle(p< 0.01), and Mn. plane angle(p<0.05) at angular measurement. Mn. plane angle is increased at HRP-Me is decreased for both A and B 3. There is no significance in skeletal stability after the surgery between group A and B. 4. Horizontal movements of B and Pog by surgery have statistically significant inverse correlations with horizontal relapse of B and Pog, and vertical relapse of PNS, as well as Mn. plane angle, and gonial angle after the surgery.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of steroid administration on the apoptosis and heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) expression after exercise in the animal model of Duchenne muscular dystrophy. METHOD: We measured Bcl-2, BAX and HSP70 expression by western blotting. 20 control and 20 mdx mice were divided into free-living (n=10) and exercise (n=10) groups. Free-living and exercise groups were further divided into steroid-treated and sham-treated groups to evaluate the effect of steroid administration. RESULTS: Apoptosis was most prominent in the sham-treated exercise group, while apoptosis was significantly reduced in the steroid-treated exercise group. HSP70 expression was maximized in sham-treated exercise group, whereas steroid administration inhibited HSP70 expression after exercise in muscular dystrophy animal model. Exercise loading was found to cause severe apoptosis but steroid administration alleviated apoptotic damage in mdx mice. CONCLUSION: HSP70 expression was suppressed in the steroid-treated exercise group, which suggests steroid might have major preventive effect in exercise-induced apoptosis of muscular dystrophy animal model.
