6.Clinical and Radiologic Results of Cementless Total Hip Arthroplasty Using Hydroxyapatite - Coated Stem.
Sung Kwan HWANG ; Seung Tae JEONG
The Journal of the Korean Orthopaedic Association 1997;32(3):573-579
From Jan. 1987 to May 1994, we carried out cementless total hip arthroplasties using hydroxyapatite-coated Omnifit system, and among these, 63 cases in 49 patients were followed up more than 24 months. The average Harris Hip Score was 46.3 points preoperatively, 95.4 points at POD 1 year and 96.2 points at POD 2 years. Two patients (3%) complained thigh pain at POD 2 years. On the radiologic findings, endosteal bone formation was noted in 34 cases (53,9 %), radiolucent lines were seen at the non-coating region of distal stem in 41 cases (65.3%), which were less than 2mm and not progressive. Cortical hypertrophy was noted in 5 cases (8.4%), and calcar atrophy was observed in 31 cases (49 %).

Korean Journal of Dermatology 1990;28(4):450-455
Erythr odysesthesia syndrome is a. peculiar toxic reaction due to anti-cancer drug. lt is characterized by a painful, purple-colored patch on the palms and soles, and may form bullae. We report a case of erythrodysesthesia syndrome in a 46-year-old woman. 5-FU and leucovorin were administered for 5 days because of her colon cancer. Two weeks after anti-cancer therapy, purple-colored erosive patch appeared on the face, and 10 days later, purple-colored vesicular patches were seen on both palms and soles, accompanied with pain. Histopathologic examination reveals a severe epidermal necrosis. Individual keratinocyte shows cytologic atypia and apoptotic body.

9.Use of Polytetrafluoroethylene for Delayed Adjustable Strabismus Surgery in Humans.
Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 1998;39(5):1024-1029
Delayed reattachment of the muscle to the sclera may be desirable to correct the deviation of eye developed after the surgery. Based upon the results of the author` s previous experimental study on rabbits, polytetrafluoroethylene was placed around the cut end of the muscle as a physical barrier between the free muscle end and the sclera in seven strabismus patients in order to prevent the postoperative adhesions. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) was effective in delaying the adjustment more than 2 weeks after surgery in 4 out of 7 patients. In 3 remaining patients, adjustment was not necessary in 2 patients up to 22 days postoperatively because of the desirable postoperative state and suture was lost in a 65-year-old patient. In every case, PTFE was removed after final adjustment. In conclusion, PTFE may be clinically useful for delaying the timing of adjustment.

Yeungnam University Journal of Medicine 1986;3(1):209-213
To study the therapeutic effect of ribavirin, a broad spectrum antiviral agent, for chronic hepatitis B in pediatric patients, 24 patients who were diagnosed as chronic hepatitis B (elevated SGOT and SGPT and positive HBsAg and HBeAg for more than 6 months) at the pediatric department of Yeungnam University Hospital from Mar. 1, 1985 to Sep. 30, 1986 were randomly divided into two groups. Ribavirin was administered to 11 patients in dose of 15mg/kg/day and 13 patients were control group and both groups were followed for 12 months. Serum HBsAg and HBeAg were measured with RIA (Ausria-II and Abbott-HBe, respectively) and compared in P/N ratio (counts per minute of patient's sample/counts per minute of normal serum). There were no statistically significant reductions in P/N ratios of HBsAg and HBeAg in both groups between prior to the therapy and 12 months follow-up period. It seems that ribavirin does not have the therapeutic effect on chronic hepatitis B in children. Also, there were no noticeable side effects from ribavirin therapy.
