As the incidence of dermographism in our urticaria clinie is quite high comparing data in other country, we have tried to survey the incidence of ermographism in the general population of Korea using a dermographic tester designed by other author. Total 8g7 healthy persons were included in this study from March J98$ to .December 1983. The study result was summarized as follows, 1. Male to female ratio was 2. 5: 1 and the peak age of the subjects was third(47 8%), fourth and fith decades in ecreasing order, The overall incidence of dermographisrn from the pressure of 48ppg/cm was 4.4% and there were no significa.nt difference in the incidences between male(4, 2%) and female(4 7%) (p>0. 1), and between the different age groups(p>0 l)

BACKGROUND: The concept of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) refers to a transitional period between normal aging and clinically demented state such as Alzheimer's disease. Detection of individuals with MCI is critical for prognosis of the disease progression and treatment of patients at risk. The current study manipulated linguistic complexity in naming nouns and verbs to examine whether the linguistically different entities contribute to differentiating individuals with MCI from normal elderly adults. Specific aims of the study are 1) to investigate the noun-verb dissociation in naming between the MCI and normal control groups and 2) to examine the differential effects between the groups depending on the linguistic subtypes of nouns (animate vs. inanimate) and verbs (the argument structure). METHODS: Twenty normal elderly individuals and 19 individuals with MCI participated in this study. A confrontation naming task was employed. Nouns were divided into the two subtypes (animate vs. inanimate), and verbs were classified into the three subtypes depending on the number of argument (1-place, 2-place, and 3-place). RESULTS: Results revealed that there were significant differences between the groups, indicating that individuals with MCI showed worse performance on naming in general than the control group. Furthermore, the MCI group presented differentially impaired performance on verbs than nouns compared to the control group. CONCLUSIONS: The results from the current study suggested that performance on a verb confrontation naming task could serve as a sensitive index to differentiate the MCI group from normal aging group.

BACKGROUND: IL-8 is a potent chemotactic cytokine that plays an important role in the host defense mechanism against M. tuberculosis by recruiting inflammatory cells to the site of the infection. Lung epithelial cells, as well as alveolar macrophages are known to preduce IL-8 in response to M. tuberculosis. IL-8 gene expression is mainly regulated on the level of transcription by NF-κB. This study investigated whether or not A549 cells produce IL-8 in NF-κB dependent mechanism in response to macrophages phagocytosing M. tubersulosis. METHODS: Peripheral blood monocytes that were obtained from healthy donors were cultured for 24 h with M. tuberculosis and a conditioned medium(CoMTB) was obtained. As a negative control, the conditioned medium without M. tuberculosis (CoMCont) was used. A549 cells were stimulated with M. tuberculosis, CoMCont and CoMTB and the IL-8 concentration in the culture media was measured by ELISA. The CoMTB induced IL-8 mRNA expression in the A549 cells was evaluated using RT-PCR, and CoMTB induced IκBα degradation was measured using western blot analysis. CoMTB induced nuclear translocation and DNA binding of NF-κB was also examined using an electrophoretic mobility shift assay(EMSA), and the CoMTB induced NF-κB dependent IL-8 transcriptional activity was measured using a luciferase reporter gene assay. RESULTS: CoMTB induced IL-8 production by A549 cells(46.8±4.8 ng/ml) was higher than with direct stimulation with M. tuberculosis (6.8±2.9 ng/ml). CoMTB induced IL-8 mRNA expression increased after 2 h of stimulation and was sustained for 24 h. IκBα was degraded after 10 min of CoMTB stimulation and reappeared by 60 min. CoMTB stimulated the nuclear translocation and DNA binding of NF-κB. The CoMTB induced NF-κB dependent IL-8 transcriptional activity(13.6±4.3 times control) was higher than either CoMCont(2.0±0.6 times control) or M. tuberculosis (1.4±0.6 times control). CONCLUSION: A conditioned medium of peripheral blood monocytes phagocytosing M. tuberculosis stimulates NF-κB dependent IL-8 production by the lung epithelial cells.

BACKGROUND: Dermatologists frequently see morbilliform rash in the clinic, drug eruptions and viral eruptions. Due to close clinical similarities, it is difficult to differentiate them. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to review the histopathologic differences between drug eruption and viral eruption. METHOD: In this study, 13 patients diagnosed as rubella and 13 patients diagnosed as drug eruption in Department of Dermatology, Presbyterian Medical Center from 1995 to 1997 were included. We reviewed the epidermal changes such as vacuolopathy, dyskeratotic cells, spongiosis and exocytosis and dermal changes by light microscopy. RESULTS: 1. Vacuolopathy of basal layer was observed in 92.3% of patients in both diseases. 2. Dyskeratotic cells, spongiosis and exocytosis were observed significantly highly in drug eruption. 3. Perivascular lymphohistiocytic infiltration was mild in both diseases, but eosinophilic infiltration was significantly higher in drug eruption(84.6%) than viral eruption(15.4%). 4. Atypical lymphocytes were observed in both diseases. 5. Red blood cell extravasation was observed only in viral eruption. 6. Perivascular edema was significantly higher in drug eruption(76.9%) than viral eruption(38.4%) CONCLUSION: There were statistically significant differences in dyskeratotic cells, spongiosis, dermal eosinophilic infiltration and Red blood cell extravasation. Considering these observation, histopathologic findings may be helpful in differentiating between drug eruption and viral eruption.

Tumor suppressive effect of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) on the experimentally induced hepatocellular carcinoma was investigated, especially focusing on glutatione transferase and transglutaminase with aptosis in the carcinogenesis. The chemical hepatocarcinogenic procedure of Solt-Farber method was used on Sprague-Dawley rats. Experimental groups were divided into AA group treated by the standard Solt-Farber regimen of diethylnitrosamine (DEN) and 2-acetamidofluorene (AAF) and AD group treated with DHEA simultaneously with AAF and the AAD group treated by DHEA after treatment with AAF. Each group was divided by time sequence further into four subgroups, GI (8wk), G2 (16wk), G3 (28wk), and G4 (36wk). For neoplastic lesion, the immuno histochemical study with anti GSTP antibody was carried out, while the activity and expression of TGase was compared at the same time. The results were summarized as follows; GST-P positive foci detected in AD groups were significantly more suppressed by DHEA treatment than AA groups (P<0.05). AD groups. AD group showed higher activities of TGase than AA groups (P<0.05), which was confirmed by Western and Northern blot analysis. But the number of apoptotic bodies was not correlated with activity and expression of TGase in the nodule. These results suggest that the suppressive effect of DHEA on the murine hepatocellular carcinogenesis might be operating on the promotion process of carcinogenesis rather than regression process of transformed hyperplastic nodules.

Purpose: The study aimed to examine doctoral students’ degree acquisition paths and postgraduate research achievements and explore whether there are differences in the research achievements of doctoral degree holders in relation to the dissertation format. Methods: This study is a retrospective cohort study of nursing doctoral graduates whose degree conferral dates were between August 2013 and August 2023 that compared two dissertation tracks: traditional and publication. We evaluated the proportion of graduates in each track, publication of their dissertations, time to graduation, and the number of peer-reviewed journal publications after graduation. Results: Of the sample, 160 (87.4%) graduated in the traditional track, with only 56 (35.0%) of them publishing their dissertations after graduation. Excluding dissertations, 114 of the graduates (71.3%) published first-authored articles in the traditional track, while 12 (52.2%) did so in the publication track. The time to graduation was significantly shorter in the traditional track, with an average of 5.47±2.45 years, compared to 6.61±2.57 years in the publication track (z=2.26, p=.023). In the traditional track, 64 of graduates (40.0%) majored in adult health nursing, whereas in the publication track, 8 (34.8%) studied community health nursing. Conclusion This study emphasizes the significance of the publication track for nursing doctoral dissertations in terms of research dissemination. Despite its numerous advantages, it is not yet the preferred choice for both students and faculty. Maintaining the publication track as an additional graduation option is worthwhile, as it allows students to gain research publishing experience before graduation and to effectively disseminate scientific findings in nursing.

We report a case of actinic granuloma in a 39 year-old woman who was presented with multiple anetoderma on non-sun exposed skin such as the neck, upper arms, elbows and calfs. The anetodermic presentation of actinic granuloma has never been reported and the common pathogenesis involving reduction of elastic fibers link the two disorders. Anetoderma secondary due to actinic granuloma should to be included in the list of secondary anetoderma and may suggest one of the possible pathogenesis of anetoderma.
