2.Pressor Effect of Intracerebroventricular Diphenhydramine and Ranitidine in Rabbits.

This study was undertaken to observe the effects of centrally administred antihistamines on the blood pressure. Diphenhydramine(DPH), a H1-receptor antagonist, and ranitidine(RAN), a H2-receptor antagonist were administered intracerebroventricularly(icv) on urethane-anesthetized rabbits. 1) Both DPH and RAN administered intraccebroventricularly increased blood pressure, however the intravenous(iv) adminstration of them did not affect blood pressure. The pressor response to icv DPH was dose-dependent, but that to icv RAN was not. 2) The pressor response to icv DPH(1mg) was either markedly attenuated or reversed to depressor response by the pretreatment with icv phentolamine(250,500ug), and iv chlorisondamine(0.1, 1mg/Kg) and iv phenoxybenzamine(1mg/Kg). In cord-sectioned rabbtis, icv RAN) 1mg) did not produce pressor response. 3) The pressor responsr to icv RAN(1mg) was not affected by the pretreatment with icv phentolamine(500ug), iv chlorisondamin(1mg/Kg) and iv phenoxybenzamine(1mg/Kg), and iv phenoxybenzamine(1mg/Kg). RAN also producted pressor response in cordsectioned rabbits. These results suggest that the pressor response to icv DPH is elecited by increasing peripheral sympathetic tone via the stimulation of central alpha-adrenoreceptors and the pressor response to icv RAN is produced by releasing some humoral facotr which can increase blood pressure.

4.Flow Cytometric Analysis of DNA patterns in Carcinoma of the Uterine Cervix.

OBJECTIVE: Flow cytometric deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) content analysis has been shown to be of prognostic importance in some cancers. In this study, DNA patterns obtained by flow cytometry in patients with cervical cancer have been shown to be related to a prognostic importance in cervical carcinoma. METHODS AND MATERIALS: We retrospectively reviewed 59 cervical cancer patients who admitted to the department of obstetrics and gynecology, Samsung Medical Center firom January 1995 to May 1997. RESULTS: A total of 59 archival paraffin-embedded blocks were proc 42.4 percent were found to be DNA content aneuploid (DNA-A) and 57.6 percent DNA content diploid (DNA-D). The S-phase fraction was significantly increased with stage. The incidences of aneuploid and relative DNA index were not significantly increased with the stage(P=0.280) and age of patients(P=0.088). The results had no significant differences between the squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma, and no relationship between the groups with keratinizing cell type and nonkeratinizing type(P=0.409). The DNA ploidy patterns were not significantly correlated with metastasis to lymph node(P=0.179), tumor size(P=0.109), invasion depth(P=0.361) and recurrent group(P=0.285). High S-phase fraction had a tendency to correlate with the invasion depth(P=0,011), size(P=0.027), lymph node metastasis(P=0.039) and recurence(P=0.099) of cervical cancer. CONCLUSION: Flow cytometric DNA content analysis is being used more frequently in the management of different malignant tumors. Our study shows that DNA content analysis may not serve as an important biological indicator in determining the prognosis in cervical carcinoma, but High S-phase fraction has been connected with more aggressive tumors.

5.Immunohistochemical Localization of Adenohypophyseal Gonadotropes in Korean Native Goat , Capra hircus.

The localizations and morphological characteristics of gonadotropes in the adenohypophy-sis of Korean native goat were investigated with double immunohistochemistry. The gonadotropes were present in the pars distalis and pars tuberalis, but not in the pars intermedta. Gonadotropes occupied about 49.0% of the cells in the pars distalis in females, and about 40.8% in males. Three types of gonadotropes ; FSH immunoreactive cells[FSH cells], LH immunoreac-tive cells[LH cells], and FSH and LH immunoreactive cells[FSH/LH cell], were identified according to their immunoreactivities for FSH and LH antisera. The possessional perce-ntages of FSH cells, LH cells and FSH/LH cells were 1.1%, 40.6%, 58.3% in females and 1.8%, 30.0%, 68.8% in males, respectively. FSH/LH cells were large and oval or round in shape. These cells were distributed throughout the pars distalis, but were more abundant on the dorsal part adjacent to the hypophyseal cavity and along the lateral and ventral peripheral regions. LH cells were smaller than other gonadotropes and were observed throughout the pars distalis, but predominant in the central region. FSH cells were large and oval in shape. These cells were intercalated between FSH/LH cells.

8.Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube (MWCNT) Dispersion and Aerosolization with Hot Water Atomization without Addition of Any Surfactant.

OBJECTIVES: Carbon nanotubes are an important new class of technological materials that have numerous novel and useful properties. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), which is a nanomaterial, is now in mass production because of its excellent mechanical and electrical properties. Although MWCNTs appear to have great industrial and medical potential, there is little information regarding their toxicological effects on researchers and workers who could be exposed to them by inhalation during the handling of MWCNTs. METHODS: The generation of an untangled MWCNT aerosol with a consistent concentration without using surfactants that was designed to be tested in in vivo inhalation toxicity testing was attempted. To do this, MWCNTs were dispersed in deionized water without the addition of any surfactant. To facilitate the dispersion of MWCNTs in deionized water, the water was heated to 40degrees C, 60degrees C, and 80degrees C depending on the sample with ultrasonic sonication. Then the dispersed MWCNTs were atomized to generate the MWCNT aerosol. After aerosolization of the MWCNTs, the shapes of the NTs were examined by transmission electron microscopy. RESULTS: The aerosolized MWCNTs exhibited an untangled shape and the MWCNT generation rate was about 50 mg/m3. CONCLUSION: Our method provided sufficient concentration and dispersion of MWNCTs to be used for inhalation toxicity testing.

9.Evaluation of the Quality of Life and the Efficacy of Treatment after High Power Potassium-titanyl-phosphate(KTP) Laser Vaporization for Patients with a Prostate Volume Greater than 40cc.

PURPOSE: This study was conducted to evaluate the quality of life and efficacy of treatment after 80 watts high power potassium-titanyl-phosphate laser vaporization for patients with a prostate volume greater than 40cc. We adopted the benign prostatic hyperplasia(BPH) quality of life (QoL)-K1 short form that was developed by the Korean Urological Association in 2001 to more accurately assess the quality of life of patients with BPH. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From July 2005 to March 2006, we performed KTP laser vaporization on a total of 38 patients with symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia of the prostate and all their prostate volumes were more than 40cc. All the patients were evaluated preoperatively and then again at 3 and 6 months postoperatively based on the International Prostate Symptom Score(IPSS), the maximum urinary flow rate(Qmax) and the postvoid residual urine(PVR). We conducted a survey of all the patients regarding BPH with using the QoL-K1 short form by means of mail and phone at a mean of 8.7 months(range: 5-12) postoperatively. RESULTS: The mean operation timewas 50.5 minutes(range: 20-120), and the mean duration of admission and catheterization were 2.9+/-0.4 days and 22.0+/-10.9 hours, respectively. The mean total score for the BPH QoL-K1 short form improved from 34.5 preoperatively to 22.5 at 6 months postoperatively(p<0.001). There was a significant improvement in the IPSS, Qmax and PVR after the operation, but there were no differences between these parameters at 3 months and 6 months after KTP laser vaporization. There was dysuria in 9(24%) patients postoperatively and urinary tract infection occurred in 10(26%) of all the patients. CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that KTP laser vaporization was effective in patients with a prostate volume more than 40cc, and the procedure produced improvements in the IPSS, Qmax,PVR and the BPH QoL-K1 short form. Despite the high rate of dysuria and urinary tract infection, the patients treated with KTP laser showed satisfaction about the operation because of the shortened duration of both admission and catheterization.

10.Traumatic Epidural Hematomas of the Posterior Fossa.

The authors represented an analysis on 10 patients with traumatic epidural hematomas of the posterior fossa who had treated successfully from January 1984 to October 1985. The result were summarized as follows ; 1) Age incidence comprised ranging from 4 to 62 years and 6 were males and 4 were females. 2) Site of hematoma was related with fracture site closely and bleeding source confirmed during operation was transverse sinus in 4 cases, occipital sinus in 1 case, fracture site in 3 cases and unknown in 2 cases and it had close relationship between fracture site and large venous sinus. 3) Outcome was good in most cases except death in 1 and moderate disability in 1 case. Factors contributing to outcome were early detection and adequate treatment and also associated supratentorial injury.
