The Korean Journal of Parasitology 2005;43(3):111-114
The present study investigated the prevalence rate of Cryptosporidium parvum as a cause of diarrhea. We examined 942 stools of unidentified reasons occurring in patients in whom no immunosuppression had been detected. We examined the stools for Cryptosporidium parvum via modified acid-fast staining. The clinical records of all of the positive patients were then analyzed. Nine (1%) of the stools among the 942 diarrheal patients were positive for C. parvum. The positive rate in the males was 1.1% (6/522) and the positive rate of the females was 0.7% (3/420). Age distribution revealed that the highest positive rates were in patients in their sixties, with a positive rate of 2.5% (4/158). In the clinical tests, levels of c-reactive protein, erythrocyte sedimentation rates, and neutrophil proportions were normally increased in the peripheral blood, whereas the lymphocyte proportion exhibited a tendency towards decrease. The pathological findings were compatible with an inflammatory reaction in the host.

Stress has been regrarded as one of the causes of central serous chorioretinopathy. We studied the effect of Hexamethonium (ganglionic blocking agent) on experimentaI serous chorioretinopathy following epinephrine injection in rabbits. In group 1, we injected the 0.1 % epinephrine into the rabbits through IV route for 10 days and in group 2, we addited Hexamethonium subcutaneously prior to injection of the epinephrine same term of gorup 1. We could find slight histological changes in gorup 2 as com paired with group 1, which produced serous chorioretinopathy, under the electronmicroscopic study so we would expect the preventive effect of Hexamethonium on the stress-induced serous chorioretinopathy.

A fine needle aspiration biopsy specimen of a retroperitoneal mass in a 26-year-old man who had had an orchiectomy for seminoma was submitted for cytologic evaluation. Cytologic features of the specimen included uniform neoplastic cells found singly or in groups of several cells intermingled with lymphocytes in a characteristic foamy, lacelike background. These cells varied from 10 to 20 m in diameter. The nuclei were round to ovoid with fine or reticular chromatin and one or more prominent nucleoli. The poorly defined cytoplasm stained pale-blue or blue with cytoplasmic vacuoles. The cytologic appearance was consistent with seminoma. Documented reports of the cytological appearance of seminoma are rare. The diagnosis of primary gonadal seminoma by fine needle aspiration biopsy is probably not indicated since the treatment of a primary gonadal tumor, regardless of its histogenesis, requires surgical resection. However, fine needle aspiration biopsy is extremely valuable in the diagnosis of extragonadal as well as metastic and recurrent seminoma.

Journal of Bacteriology and Virology 2009;39(3):229-235
To investigate the occurrence and distribution of serotype, specific virulence genes, and pulse field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) patterns in Vibrio parahaemolyticus isolates from Jeonnam, Korea, we tested 87 strains which were identified with V. parahaemolyticus from diarrheal episode patients in 2005. In this study, 16 different O:K serotype combinations of V. parahaemolyticus were determined. The distributions of O and K serotypes were O4:K68 (51.72%), O1:K70 (18.39%), O3:K6 (5.74%), O1:K68 (4.60%) and O3:K57 (4.60%) respectively. Serotype O4:K68 was the regional dominant specific serotype of V. parahaemolyticus in Sinan of Jeonnam, Korea. For the detection of thermostable direct hemolysin (tdh) and TDH-related hemolysin (trh) gene of V. parahaemolyticus, PCR was performed. The tdh gene was detected in all of the V. parahaemolyticus isolates from diarrheal patients, but trh gene was not detected. Analysis of PFGE patterns of 30 V. parahaemolyticus isolates showed 3 groups and 20 types. Among 14 O4:K68 serotypes which were isolated in Sinan, PFGE patterns of 12 strains were closely related (100%), but 2 strains were related by 58.3% and 45.4%, respectively. Also two strains of O1:K4 serotype in Gurye and two strains of O3:K6 serotype in Yeosu were closely related (100%), respectively. Although serotypes (O1:K4, O1:K70, O3:K6 and O4:K68) were different, PFGE patterns were related for more than 80.9%. Therefore, the epidemiological surveillance of V. parahaemolyticus is required by PFGE typing scheme as a further diagnostic tool.

The Journal of Korean Academy of Prosthodontics 2012;50(2):119-127
PURPOSE: This study was performed to compare the stress distribution pattern of abutment-fixture connection area using 3-dimensional finite element model analysis when 5 different implant systems which have internal connection. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For the analysis, a finite element model of implant was designed to locate at first molar area. Stress distribution was observed when vertical load of 200 N was applied at several points on the occlusal surfaces of the implants, including center, points 1.5 mm, 3.0 mm away from center and oblique load of 200 N was applied 30degrees inclined to the implant axis. The finite element model was analyzed by using of 3G. Author (PlassoTech, California, USA). RESULTS: The DAS tech implant (internal step with no taper) showed more favorable stress distribution than other internally connected implants. AS compare to the situations when the loading was applied within the boundary of implants and an oblique loading was applied, it showed higher equivalent stress and equivalent elastic strain when the loading was applied beyond the boundary of implants. Regardless of loading condition, the abutments showed higher equivalent stress and equivalent elastic strain than the fixtures. CONCLUSION: When the occlusal contact is afforded, the distribution of stress varies depending on the design of connection area and the location of loading. More favorable stress distribution is expected when the contact load was applied within the diameter of fixtures and the DAS tech implant (internal step with no tapering) has more benefits than the other design of internally connected implants.

Child Health Nursing Research 2018;24(4):454-464
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to develop an experience-based sex education program to improve adjustment to puberty in elementary school students in the upper grades and to verify its effectiveness. METHODS: This study had a pretest-posttest nonequivalent control group design. The subjects of this study were a total of 95 sixth-graders in Y city (experimental group: 48, control group: 47). The measurement variables were sexual knowledge, body image, self-esteem, and satisfaction with life. Four sessions of the experience-based sex education program to improve adjustment to puberty, consisting of 40 minutes per session, were provided to the experimental group. RESULTS: Children's sexual knowledge, self-esteem, and satisfaction with life in the experimental group, which participated in the experience-based sexual education program to improve adjustment to puberty, showed a significant increase compared to the control group. However, there was no statistically significant difference in body image. CONCLUSION: This study presents the development of an experience-based sex education program for adjustment to puberty to overcome the shortcomings of existing sex education programs that are limited to sexual knowledge and attitudes, and also verified that the sexual knowledge, self-esteem, and life satisfaction of the elementary school students who were provided with the program improved meaningfully.
