To verify whether laser-induced branch retinal vein occlusion in the rabbit can be used as the experimental model for the human study. The temporal retinal vein of the right eye was occluded with argon laser photocoagulator with parameters of 500 micrometerspot size, 0.2 second duration, 150-200 microWatt power in twelve pigmented rabbits. The left eye was used as a control. An electroretinogram was taken before and 1,3,7,15 and 28 days after vein occlusion. B/a ratio and oscillatory potentials increased in the eyes with occluded veins. Comparing the pre-occlusion values with those of post-occlusion, the changes were not statistically significant. But differences between the values of right and those of left eye were significant. We can suppose that the discrepancies may result from the difference in timing of examination. In conclusion, the rabbit model of laser-induced experimental branch retinal vein occlusion may not be adequate for the study of clinical branch retinal vein occlusion.

Endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) is a common procedure performed in patients with chronic sinusitis. Although most of them result in excellent outcomes, some complications due to injury of nearby structures, such as the orbit or brain, may have serious consequences. Ophthalmic complications, occurring in less than 1% of all ESS cases, include orbital hematoma, diplopia, injury to the nasolacrimal duct, and in severe cases, even blindness. Here, we present a rare case in which a 49-year old female developed unilateral blepharoptosis after undergoing revision ESS.

Background and Objectives: Proximal submandibular stone is not a rare disease. The aim of this study is to evaluate the surgical outcomes of 3 different ways to treat proximal submandibular stone: intraoral removal of stone (IORS) with sublingual gland (SLG) resection, IORS without SLG resection and submandibular gland (SMG) resection. Subjects and Methods: We prospectively reviewed the surgical outcomes of IORS with SLG resection group (22 patients), IORS without SLG resection group (35 patients) and SMG resection group (22 patients). To evaluate the surgical outcomes, we analyzed the location and size of stones, mean operation time, mean hospital stay, mean postoperative degree of pain based on a visual analog scale (0–10), and incidence of complications. Results: There were no significant differences between the mean diameter of stones and lengthfrom the hilum to stones. The mean operation time was shorter in the IORS without SLG re-section group than that in IORS without SLG resection group, and was significantly shorter than that of the SMG resection group. The mean hospital stay of the IORS without SLG resection group was also shorter than that of IORS with SLG resection group, and was significantly short-er than the SMG resection group. IORS without SLG resection group felt less pain than IORS with SLG resection group and SMG resection group. Four patients who underwent IORS without SLG resection experienced transient and mild SMG swelling, and mild paresthesia was noted on the same side. All patients recovered within 3 months. Intraoral removal of proximal SMG stones exhibited several advantages over SMG resection in terms of hospital stay, mean operation, time and postoperative pain. Conclusion Based on our results, we suggest that IORS without SLG resection be selected as the primary procedure for the removal of proximal submandibular stones rather than SMG resection.

More recent decades have witnessed developments such as digital imaging using a picture archiving and communication system, computer-aided detection/diagnosis, organ-specific workstations, and molecular, functional, and quantitative imaging. One of the latest technical breakthrough in the field of radiology has been imaging genomics and robotic interventions for biopsy and theragnosis. This review provides an engineering perspective on these developments and several other megatrends in radiology.

Background: A clear and precise definition of the “intended use” in developing new medical devices can determine the success of entering the healthcare market. For this, practical collaboration between the clinical and engineering experts is necessary, and an appropriate tool is required for effective information collection and decision-making in the process. Methods: The Korean Academy of Medical Sciences, in cooperation with the Korean Medical Device Development Fund, implemented the Healthcare Experts’ Advisory Unit and Support (HAUS) program to match advisory clinical experts in medical device development projects. Three and five collaborative academic conferences were held in 2022 and 2023 to raise awareness of the HAUS program. In the consultation meeting, checklists were used to facilitate communications and satisfaction surveys were conducted afterward. Then, the results of the consultation meetings were compiled to build an integrated document. Results: The HAUS program was conducted with a gradually increasing number of consultation sessions from 31 in 2021 to 128 in 2023. The medical device development teams (development teams) expressed a higher level of satisfaction (91.4% to 100%) compared to the advisors (clinical experts) (78.6% to 100%) across the survey items. Based on the experiences and observations of the HAUS consultation meetings, the “Clinical Unmet Needs-based Intended Use Establishment (CLUE) templates” were developed, which were purposes to improve communication efficiency and to support a systematic approach in establishing the intended use. The CLUE process comprises four main stages for processing:Stage 1, Initial Concept; Stage 2, Expert Consultation; Stage 3, Decision-making; and Stage 4, Intended Use. Conclusion The HAUS program seemed to be helpful for the development teams by providing opinions of clinical experts. And the resultant product, the CLUE templates have been proposed to facilitate collaboration between the development teams and the advisors and to define robust clinical intended use.
