1.Effects of Cognitive-Behavioral Group Therapy for Binge Eating.

OBJECTIVES: The binge eaters are increasing rapidly since 1990's in Korea. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of cognitive-behavioral group therapy on improving the frequency of binging and purging, eating attitude, self-esteem, and depression. METHOD: The subjects were 27 women who showed over 17 on the EAT-26 among binge eaters visited at eating disorders clinic "M". 10 sessions of cognitive-behavioral group therapy were provided to each group composed of 8-10 binge eaters. All subjects completed the Eating Disorders Inventory (EDI), Rosenberg Self-Eesteem Scale, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) pre- and post intervention, and recorded daily food records. Paired t-test was used for the comparison of EDI subscales before and after treatment. RESULTS: Frequency of binging and purging, self-esteem, depression, drive for thinness, bulimia, body dissatisfaction, ineffectiveness, interoceptive awareness subscales of EDI showed significant immprovement but perfectionism, interpersoual distrust, maturity fear subscales of EDI showed no improvement after the cognitive-behavioral group therapy. Frequency of binging and purging per week showed a general trend of decline from the beginning to the end of the treatment and a rapid decrease at the second week was noticed. CONCLUSION: The results of this preliminary study suggest that cognitive-behavioral group therapy may be an effective initial approach for the treatment of binge eating. Future research aimed at replicating these initial results and providing systematic long-term evaluation is needed.

2.Auditory Function Testing for Types of Dementia: Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis

It is acknowledged that there is a negative relationship between dementia and auditory function in older adults. This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis based on the data of audiologic testings from patients with neurodegenerative diseases in terms of auditory eventrelated potentials and central auditory processing tests, while focusing on Alzheimer’s disease (AD), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), and Parkinson’s disease dementia (PDD). A total of 34765 articles were retrieved from the seven electronic databases. After being screened by Participants, Index test, Control, Outcomes, Study design (PICOS) criteria, 129 articles for AD were included and then 72 articles were applied to the meta-analysis. However, five and six ar-ticles were systematically reviewed for the auditory functions of DLB and PDD, respectively,due to a small number of articles. The results of meta-analysis showed a significant difference between patients with AD and age-matched normal subjects, for N200 and P300 latency, P300 amplitude, and the behavioral central auditory processing tests, although there was a high heterogeneity. On the other hand, the systematic review indicated that the results of mismatch negativity test might distinguish auditory performance of DLB patients from that of PDD. Furthermore, for P300 amplitude, anterior to posterior distribution of brain resulted in meaningful difference of auditory function between AD and DLB patients. In sum, current review study suggests that lesion and degree of auditory (dys)function may be different depending on the type of dementia, although future research should be followed.
3.Customer Discovery as the First Essential Step for Successful Health Information Technology System Development

OBJECTIVES: Customer discovery (CD) is a method to determine if there are actual customers for a product/service and what they would want before actually developing the product/service. This concept, however, is rather new to health information technology (IT) systems. Therefore, the aim of this paper was to demonstrate how to use the CD method in developing a comprehensive health IT service for patients with knee/leg pain. METHODS: We participated in a 6-week I-Corps program to perform CD, in which we interviewed 55 people in person, by phone, or by video conference within 6 weeks: 4 weeks in the United States and 2 weeks in Korea. The interviewees included orthopedic doctors, physical therapists, physical trainers, physicians, researchers, pharmacists, vendors, and patients. By analyzing the interview data, the aim was to revise our business model accordingly. RESULTS: Using the CD approach enabled us to understand the customer segments and identify value propositions. We concluded that a facilitating tele-rehabilitation system is needed the most and that the most suitable customer segment is early stage arthritis patients. We identified a new design concept for the customer segment. Furthermore, CD is required to identify value propositions in detail. CONCLUSIONS: CD is crucial to determine a more desirable direction in developing health IT systems, and it can be a powerful tool to increase the potential for successful commercialization in the health IT field.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES:
The increasing prevalence of overweight and obesity has become a significant global burden, with more than 40% of the global adult population attempting to lose weight. Previous studies on the impact of weight-control methods on mental health, especially among adolescents, are limited. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the association between various weight-control methods and depression among adolescents, with the goal of informing healthier weight management decisions and promoting effective methods.
SUBJECTS/METHODS:
This nationwide study utilized data from the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey, including a sample of 418,254 adolescents collected over 12yrs (2007–2019). We conducted a weighted complex sample analysis to compare depression rates associated with specific weight-control methods, including exercise, fasting (≥ 24 h), eating less, taking prescriptionon-prescription weight-loss medication, taking laxatives or diuretics, vomiting, one-food diet, taking oriental medicine, and diet foods.
RESULTS:
Of the 418,254 participants, 45.96% (192,246) were male. Among male participants, fasting (≥ 24 h; weighted odds ratio [wOR], 1.43; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.36–1.51) and vomiting (wOR, 1.49; 95% CI, 1.35–1.66) were associated with an increased risk of depression. Among female participants, prescribed (wOR, 0.82; 95% CI, 0.74–0.90) and non-prescribed (wOR, 0.89; 95% CI, 0.82–0.97) weight-loss medication reduced the risk of depression. However, fasting (≥ 24 h; wOR, 1.47; 95% CI, 1.41–1.52) vomiting (wOR, 1.45;95% CI, 1.36–1.55) significantly increased the risk of depression.
CONCLUSION
The risk of depression varies depending on the weight-control method, with a consistent trend observed across both sexes. Methods such as vomiting, fasting, taking oriental medicine for weight loss, and consuming diet foods increased the risk of depression, while weight-loss medications were associated with reduced depression symptoms in females. These findings highlight the need for further research on weightcontrol medications and policies that support effective weight management while reducing depressive effects.
