A 23-year-old medical student showed a positive reaction on a skin test for Paragonimus westermani, and two Tarsonemus floricolus mites were subsequently found by sputum examination and identified morphologically. Our report is the first human case of Tarsonemus floricolus in Korea.

5.Recently increasing hematologic diseases in Korea.
Korean Journal of Medicine 2010;78(5):557-563
Under the influence of an aging society, westernized diets, and environmental factors, the incidence of hematologic diseases in Korea has changed over the past decades. Another reason for the increase is that the growth of molecular biology has contributed to improvements in the diagnosis and treatment of hematologic disease. Although the incidence of aplastic anemia has recently declined, that of other hematologic diseases, such as multiple myeloma, myelodysplastic syndrome, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, and Hodgkin lymphoma, is rising. The incidence of thalassemia, a rare hereditary disorder of hemoglobin synthesis, is increasing because Korean society is changing to a multi-ethnic society through international marriage. In this article, we describe the recently increasing hematologic diseases in Korea.

The association of major fetal malformations with amniotic bands has been known for many years. However, we are apt to ignore the possibility of amniotic band syndrome. In this case, fetal anencephaly was diagnosed at 17 weeks, menstrual age on the basis of sonographic findings. Following pregnancy termination, examination of the abortus rev- ealed the cerebral remnant which is similar to that found in dysraphic anencephaly, but collateral evidence of amniotic band was found. Therefore, when confronted with severe cranial or cerebral malformation amniotic band syndrome should be in the differential dia- gnosis.

Korean Journal of Pediatric Infectious Diseases 2009;16(1):87-91
A 5-year-old boy was admitted to the hospital with a high fever and abnormal gait. Magnetic resonance imaging showed extensive swelling of the quadriceps and adductor muscles around the right hip and anterior thigh. A duplex scan demonstrated a thrombus from the external iliac vein to below the popliteal vein. The blood culture revealed Streptococcus pyogenes. The patient was immediately treated with antibiotics and anticoagulants. Follow-up sonography demonstrated complete disappearance of the venous thrombosis. We report a case of streptococcal myositis complicated by deep vein thrombosis.

8.Curriculum Development for the Hospital Administration Related Workers: An example of one university hospitals.
Journal of Korean Society of Medical Informatics 2004;10(1):91-103
This study was conducted to collect data on the educational needs for hospital administrations and related departments to redesign the existing hospital information management and administration programs for Bachelor and Master degree students of medical informatics in one university. We surveyed the web sites and admission brochures of all the educational facilities of hospital administration related workers in Korea. We also surveyed hospital workers in hospital administration departments at three university affiliated hospitals using a questionnaire developed by the author. The survey results showed that most hospital employees indicated a need to take very fundamental classes in their fields. In order to satisfy the needs of the students up to date, the department of medicine in one university developed a new medical informatics course specially designed for Bachelor and Master degree students in hospital administration. In addition, the Graduate School of Industrial Information Engineering of one university decided to offer basic as well as a specialized training courses for the graduate students who are hospital administrators.

Korean Journal of Clinical Microbiology 2000;3(1):62-68
BACKGROUND: Direct wet mount examination of vaginal secretion, widely applied for the diagnosis of Trichomonas vaginalis infection in woman patients, is rapid and economical. However, the sensitivity of this technique is not so high. In this study enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA) was employed for the detection of serum anti-T. vaginalis IgG antibodies from vaginal trichomoniasis patients. METHODS: Eighty sera from trichomonoasis patients who visited a Dr. Yoon Kyong's Obstetric & Gynecologic Clinic in Songnam and 30 non-infected healthy men were tested for detection of anti-T. vaginalis IgG antibody. Soluble lysate and excretory-secretory antigen prepared by mixing of six isolates of T. vaginalis, and lysate from one isolate(KT4) were used as antigen for ELISA. RESULTS: The sensitivity of ELISA using lysate of six isolates was 95.0%, and the sensitivity of the lysate from KT4 and mixed excretory-secretory antigen from 6 isolates were 86.4% and 76.3%, respectively. Specificities of ELISA by three 93.3%, 96.3% and 92.0%, respectively. CONCLUSION: It is suggested that ELISA using mixed lysate of T. vaginalis six isolates could be useful tools for the diagnosis of trichomoniasis.
