Brachycephaly is a kind of craniosynostosis. Because of premature closure of the coronal suture, the skull is shorter in the anteroposterior diameter but is widened with a high vault and the occiput and forehead are flattened. Diabetes insipidus had been reported in oxycephaly. We have experienced a case of central diabetes insipidus associated with brachycephaly. A brief review of related literatures is included in this report.

This study was designed to evaluate the correlations between the morphology and growth of cranial base and the position of nasomaxillary complex and mandible in complete unilateral cleft lip and palate patients. Craniofacial skeletal morphology pattern was analyzed on the lateral cephalometric radiographs of the 100 subjects of complete unilateral cleft lip and palate group and the 100 normal grower group and each group was divided three sub-groups by age-range like spheno-ethmoidal synchodrosis growing group, spheno-occipital synchondrosis growing group and finished synchondrosis growth group. These data were statistically analyzed to examine significant difference between both groups and between each sub-groups. The results of this study were as follows: 1. In complete unilateral cleft group, the length, thickness of clivus, and the rate of increase in length of clivus showed smaller amount by adolescence. The anterior length of cranial base and the rotation pattern of clivus with age showed no significant difference between two group. 2. In complete unilateral cleft group, nasomaxillary complex were located more posteriorly. This difference between two groups is larger by adolescent group than adult. Vertical position showed no significant difference between two gi oups. There was significant correlation between the cranial base of cleft group and the horizontal measurements(p<0.01). PtmS showed no significant increment in cleft group. This showed the deficiency of growth in posterior part of maxilla. . 3. In mandible, there was no significant difference between normal group and complete unilateral cleft group but articular angle showed significantly smaller in cleft group than in normal one. And the measurements of nasomaxillary complex position, cranial base and the position of mandible had significant correlation(p<0.01).

This study was designed to analysis the airway which affects to breathing, speech, and facial growth pattern in unilateral cleft lip and palate patients. Upper airway and the position of hyoid bone pattern were analyzed on the lateral cephalometric radiographs of the 78 subjects of complete unilateral cleft lip and palate group and each group was divided two sub-groups by circumpubertal growth peak and gender. These data were statistically analyzed to examine the difference between pre-circumpubertal growth peak group and post-circumpubertal growth peak one, and between male and female group. The results of this study were as follows: 1. After circumpubertal growth peak stage, the position of hyoid bone was lower than before in both male and female group. 2. After circumpubertal growth peak stage, the measurement were increased in CV3ia-APH , PNS-ad which related to the volume of pharyngeal space. This was due to the decrease of adenoid and anteroinferior growth of mandible and affected to breathing and speech after circumpubertal growth peak. 3. During circumpubertal growth peak stage, all measurements increased more in male than female group, which due to the different amount of growth in different gender. 4. The position of hyoid bone was lower in male than female group in all age group. 5. After circumpubertal growth peak stage, CV3ia-APH increased more in male. This was due to the more growth in madible of male which resulted in the activation of digastric muscle.

The effects of 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1, 2, 3, 6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) on movement and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH)-immunoreactive (ir) neuronal changes in young (5~6 weeks) and aged (10~12 months) C57BL/6 mice were studied. Locomotor activity was measured during 180 minutes after a single injection of 30 mg/kg of MPTP. For immunohistochemistry both young and aged mice were injected four repeated dosages of 10 mg/kg of MPTP 12 hours apart. We counted the numbers of TH-ir cell bodies using immunohistochemical technique in substantia nigra (SN), ventral tegmental area (VTA) and locus ceruleus (LC) 7 days after the last injection of MPTP. There was a marked decrease of locomotor activity in MPTP-treated young and aged mice, and a delay in recovery of locomotor activity in MPTP-treated aged mice. In young mice, there was a decrease in the number of TH-ir cell bodies in the SN of young mice, but not in VTA or LC. In aged mice, there was a significant decrease in the number of TH-ir cell bodies in VTA as well as SN. It was concluded that aged mice were more sensitive to MPTP than young mice, and MPTP-treated aged mice a more useful animal model for studing the characteristics of Parkinson's disease.

Pedicled bone flap raised from the volar aspect of lower end of the radius, pedicled by the pronator quadratus has been used for the treatment of scaphoid nonunion and Kienbock's disease. From July 1991 to Jan. 1992, authors performed this procedures for 3 cases of Kienbock's disease. Patients were 2 cases in the left hand, l case in the right hand. There was no critial trauma history. Age at operation were 25, 37 and 57 years. All patients were in Stage I in 2 cases and stage II-A in 1 case of Lichtman's radiologic classification. Preoperative grip powers were 11%, 38%, 63% and pinch powers were 20%, 41%, 61% of that of normal opposite hand. Follow up periods were 28, 31 and 33 months. At last follow up roentgenographic finding shows no progression of necrosis of lunate, new bone formation, decreased sclerosis, and joint space were preserved in all cases. The fuctional results at the last follow up were as follows. Pain during motion was markedly diminished in all patients. Grip power were 57%, 89% and 96% and pinch powers were 68%, 83% and 100% of that of normal opposite hand with use of calibrated Jamar dynamometer which showes significant increase than preoperative state. The ranges of motion of wrist were as follows. Volar flexion were 40, 45 and 80 degree. Dorsiflexion were 10, 20 and 45 degree. Ulnar deviation were 10, 20 and 30 degree. Radial deviation were 10, 25 and 30 degree. This viable bone graft with blood supply gives very satisfactory clinical results.

PURPOSE: To investigate the clinical characteristics and histological features of tumors in caruncles. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective chart review of 126 eyes of 126 patients who underwent incisional or excisional biopsy of conjunctival masses between March 2008 and December 2016. RESULTS: Twenty-four patients (19.0%) including 10 males and 14 females had a mass located on the caruncle. The mean age at diagnosis was 41.8 ± 13.4 years (range, 15–67 years). Most patients (75%) visited us for a cosmetically visible mass without other symptoms. The mean duration of symptoms was 73.8 ± 113.0 months (range, 1–240 months). The most common histological diagnosis was a melanocytic tumor (50%) followed by a sebaceous gland tumor (12.5%), an epidermoid cyst (12.5%), and papilloma (12.5%). The symptom duration of the melanocytic tumor was significantly longer than other types of tumors (153.6 ± 139.8 months, p = 0.025). CONCLUSIONS: Caruncular tumors accounted for 19% of all conjunctival tumors. The most common pathological diagnosis of a caruncular tumor was a melanocytic tumor, which had a characteristically long symptom duration.

BACKGROUND: Hemodilution reduces the concentration of clotting factors in blood and this may induce some degree of impairment of coagulation. But there are some evidence that hemodilution may induce a hypercoagulable state. The goal of this study is to investigate the changes of coagulation status during progressive hemodilution. METHODS: Whole Blood was diluted by 10% increment to 80% with 0.9% normal saline. At each 10% dilution blood coagulation status was analysed using thrombelastography (TEG) and was compared with that of an undiluted control specimen obtained concurrently from the same patients. RESULTS: Hemodilutions up to 40% decrease r and K times and increase values of MA and angle. Hemodilutions more than 70% increase r and K times and decrease values of MA and angle. CONCLUSIONS: Hemodilutions up to 40% increase coagulability and hemodilutions more than 70% decrease coagulability of whole blood in vitro.
