Osteosarcoma probably arises from a primitive, undifferentiated mesenchyme, It is highly malignant bone tumor characterized by the invariable formation of neoplastic osteoid and tumor tissue with poor prognosis. Osteosarcoma may involve any bone, but usually arises in the metaphyseal portion of long bones, most frequently at the distal ent of the femur, the proximal end of the tibia, and the proximal end of the humerus. The authors have experienced one case (52 year old male) of osteosarcoma originating from the right patella.

The application of the arthroscope to the shoulder joint has evolved in recent years for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. This paper presented 11 cases with various shoulder diseases treated by arthroscopy during the period from January, 1984 to September, 1985 in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, College of Medicine, Soon Chun Hyang University. The advantages of the arthroscopy were as follows: 1. The arthroscopy made it easier to diagnose the unsolved cases by direct biopsy on the pathologic lesions in the joint. 2. The damage on the inside and outside of the shoulder joint was minimal and the post-operative incision scar was acceptable cosmetically. 3. The limitation of the joint motion did not remain due to early exercise post-operatively. 4. The complications such as infection, neurovascular injury, scuffing of joint cartilage, etc. could be avoided.

Persistent burning and derythema were present for 10 months cin he lower lip of a 55-year-old woman, who had extreme melalignment of the anterior maxillary teeth. Candida albicans was identified not only from the surface material of the lower lip but also from tl.e malaigned dental cleft, which was thought to be the source of the organisms. We feel that the impor.ance of malaligned theeth as a source of candida albicans miist be kept in mind when we face persis ent cheilitis in a patient whose teeth arrangement is bad.

In dermatologic practice, acute urticaria showing leukocytosis and fever suggesting syatemic bacterial infection is often observed. The clinician in dealing with such patients is tempted to use antibiotics in addition to corticosteroids and antihistamines before the patient can be sure that there is no bacterial infection. Authors observed the degree of the leukocytosis with its differential counts in 106 cases of acute urticaria to evaluate what percentages of acute urticaria patients are showing similar data with the changes seen in leukocyte counts of patients of erysipelas, and evaluated the effect of aqtibiotics-administered group with non-administered group of acute urticaria patients. The results were as follows: 1. In 106 acute urticaria patients, 42% showed higher total leukocyte count ( >12, 500/cu mm) than the mean total leukocytes of 20 erysipelas patients(12, 412/cu mm) and 29% showed greater neutrophilia(>70%) than the mean neutrophil differential count of the erysipelas (69.1%). In the cases showing both leukocytosis (>12,500/cu mm) and fever (>37. 5C) there was no difference in the course of treatment between the antibiotics-administered group and non-administered group. 3. The corticosteroid hormone reduced the total WBC count toward normal level generally within a week.

One-hundred-eleven herpes simplex viruses(HSV) were isolated from l09 patients who had visited the Department of Dermatology, Ophthalmology, and Gynecology of Hanyang University Hospital from 1986 through 1988, for suspected HSV lesions. The cultured viruses were classified into HSV-1 and HSV-2 by using direct and indirect immunofluorescent staining with monoclonal antibodies against HSV. In this study, HSV type 1 were predominantly involved in the HSV lesions above the waist of the patients(83.6%), and the infections caused by HSV type 2(I3.1 %) and bath HSV types(3.3%) were also noted. In contrast, the main organism of the HSV lesions below the waist were HSV-2(80.0%), and HSV-1(16.0% ) and both types(4.0%) were also involved in. The result suggested that the number of patients with HSV 1 genital herpes and/or with non-genital herpes by HSV-2 were apparently increasing. In conclusion, it is conceivable that the classification of HSV isolates might be useful for determining prognosis as well as performing epidemiologic studies of HSV infections.

Osteochondroma is the most common benign tumor of bone, of which the typical form is a cartilagecapped bony projection, far often found at the metaphysis of the long tubular bones, and may arise from any bone performed in cartilage. To our knowledge, however, osteochondroma of lumbar spine has been reported 11 cases, but We experienced a case of osteochondroma located in the position normally occupied by right side lamina of 5th lumbar vertebra. The mass was excised and disclosed typical microscopic findings of osteochondroma.
