Korean Journal of Orthodontics 1995;25(6):705-714
Due to the great deal of effort that has gone into the study of osteoclastic differentiation and activation over the last few decades, the mechanisms of these two events have been discovered gradually. Nitric oxide(NO-), which is produced from arginine by a nitric oxide synthase, opened up a new area of biological research. Recently, it has been reported that NO- is produced by osteoblasts stimulated by lipopolysaccharide and several other cytokines. In this study, the effect of sodium nitroprusside(SNP), a donor of nitric oxide(NO-), on osteoclast-like cell formation and on mature osteoclast function was examined. To determine the mechanism of the inhibitory effects of SNP decreased not only the basal 45Ca release but also thee bone resorption induced by PTH and l,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (I ,25[OH]2D3). The inhibitory effect of SNP on bone resorption induced by PTH appeared 2 days after treatment, whereas SNP effect on inhibiting bone resorption induced by l,25[OH]2D3 appeared at the third days. When chicken and rat osteoclasts were cultured on dentin slices, treatment of 300micronM SNP resulted in a significant decrease in dentin resorption by osteoclasts in terms of total resorption area and average individual area. We also examined the effect of SNP on formation of osteoclast-like cells that is TRAP-positive multinucleated cells from chicken and rat bone marrow cells in the presence or absence of 10(-8)M l,25[OH]2D3. The addition of 300 micronM SNP inhibited the formation of TRAP-positive multinucleated cells. The present data suggest that SNP, possibly as a NO- donor, inhibits the osteoclastic differentiation and osteoclastic activity.

Even though some authors have reported on the advantages of early total correction of complex heart disease, for low birth weight premature neonates, most surgeons prefer a multi-step approach to early total correction due to the many problems, such as the technical problems, the cardiopulmonary bypass management and etc. We report here on a successful case of early one-stage total repair of coarctation of the aorta and a ventricular septal defect in a 1,250 gram premature neonate.

This study was carried out to investigate the heavy metal contents and their correlations between paddy soil and brown rice near the Kum-River area. In this study, eighty soil samples and forty brown rice samples were taken from the paddy soil. The contents of heavy metals were measured by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The results were as follows: 1. The average contents of soluble heavy metals in surface soil were Cd 0.19, Cu 15.31, Zn 18.10 and Pb 9.08 ppm. The average contents of soluble heavy metals in subsurface soil were Cd 0.19, Cu 14.52, Zn 17.75 and Pb8.11 ppm. There wan no statistically significant difference between the two layers. 2. The contents of Cu, Zn and Pb of Taejeon(S6) and Cd of Sinbyung(S5) in surface soil were higher than those of other areas. The contents of Cd and Cu of Taejeon(S6) and Zn and Pb of Kumnam(S3) in brown rice were higher than those of other areas and four heavy metals in soil and brown rice of Simchon(S7) were lower than those of other areas. 3. The ratio of soluble contents(Cd : Cu : Zn : Pb) in surface soil was 1 : 79 : 93 : 47, that of soluble contents in subsurface soil was 1 : 79 : 94 : 43, and that of total contents in brown rice was 1 : 84 : 294 : 12. 4. The correlations of the content between soluble heavy metals in surface(0-15 cm depth) soil total heavy metals in brown rice was found to be order of Cd>Cu>Zn>Pb. The correlations of the content between soluble heavy metals in subsurface(20-30 cm depth) soil and total heavy metals in brown rice was found to be order of Cu>Cd>Zn>Pb.

Korean Journal of Dermatology 1989;27(6):762-767
We have experienced three cases of extrarnsmmary Pagets disease. The first case was a 77-year-old female who showed 8x10cm sized, erythematous plaque on the suprspubic area of one year's duration. The second case was a 60-year-old male who showed erythematous, oozing, crusted, well circumscribed patches on the right scrotum and the pubic area of 8 years' duration. Third case was a 79-year-old male who showed erythernstous to gray, eczemstoid plaques with marginal elevation on the right side of the scrotum, penile root and pubic area of 3 years duration. On histologic exarnination, the third case showed swest gland adenocarcinoma in the dermis.

10.Study on the characteristics of craniofacial skeleton of Angle's class III malocclusion cases.
Korean Journal of Orthodontics 1991;21(2):457-468
This investigation was designed to categorize Angle's class III malocclusion groups through analyzing horizontal and vertical components of craniofacial skeleton in Angle's class III malocclusion. The material selected for this study consisted in standard lateral cephalogram of one hundred and fifty five children, seventy four boys and eighty one girls, aged 6 through 15 years, having Angle's class III malocclusion. On the basis of findings of this study, the following results were obtained. 1. In horizontal skeletal classifications, 16 groups were classified FMN-A-B, SE-FMN-A according to the Ba-SE-Me, Ba-SE/R. 2. The sequences that have relatively high frequency are as follow; a) Horizontal Group 1 b) Horizontal Group 3 c) Horizontal Group 5 d) Horizontal Group 9 e) Horizontal Group 4 3. In vertical skeletal classification, 8 groups were classified according to the PMV/PP, PMV/OP, PMV/MP. 4. The sequences that relatively high are as follows; a) Vertical Group 1 b) Vertical Group 3 c) Vertical Group 4 d) Vertical Group 8
