7.A Pathologic Study on the Common "Epithelial" Tumor of Ovary.

One hundred eighty-six cases of ovarian common "epithelial" tumor including 28 endometriosis were reviewed, from the pathology file of the department of pathology of the National Medical Center during a period of 8 years and 6 months from January 1976 to June 1984. The study consisted of 14 cases(77.4%) of benign tumor including 28 cases of ovarian endometriosis, and 21 cases(11.3%) of borderline malignancy and 21 cases(11.3%) of invasive malignant tumors. Among benign common "epithelial" tumors, mucinous cystadenoma(69 cases) was the most frequent tumor, followed by serous cystadenoma (42 cases) and Brenner tumor (5 cases). Of borderline tumor, borderline mucinous tumor (18 cases) was more frequent than serous tumor (3 cases). Serous cystadenocarcinoma(9 cases) was the most frequent malignant tumor, followed by mucinous cystadenocarcinoma(6 cases), endometrioid carcinoma(3 cases) and undifferentiated carcinoma(3 cases). Most ovarian common "epithelial" tumors were prevalent during the reproductive age, but malignant tumors were more prevalent after the age of 40. Although right side was more frequently found (85 vs. 67) there is no significant site predilection. Bilaterality was the most common in undifferentiated carcinoma(66.7%), followed by serous cystadenocarcinoma(44.4%) and Brenner tumor(40%). The size of tumor tended to be larger in malignant tumor than benign. Mucinous tumor were usually larger than serous tumor. There were 7 intrauterine and 1 ectopic tubal prognancy which were associated with ovarian common "epithelial" tumors. Three cases of tumors were excised during Cesarian section. In summary these findings are comparable to other reports in Korea and English literatures. Histologic analysis of borderline and malignant epithelial tumor was done to emphasize their biologic behavor. Further study is required to compare their histological grading and clinical staging with thier survival rate.

9.Chromosome 22q11 Deletion in Patients with Infundibular Ventricular Septal Defect .

PURPOSE: This study was undertaken to determine the incidence of chromosome 22q11 deletion in patients with infundibular ventricular septal defect(VSD). METHODS: Sixty-two children with infundibular VSD were included in this study from January 1999 to December 2000. Chromosome 22q11 deletion was confirmed by FISH, using LSI DiGeorge/VCFS region dual color probe(Vysis, USA). RESULTS: Thirty-two patients had conotruncal cardiac defects:tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) in 15; TOF with absent pulmonary valve in 1; VSD with pulmonary atresia in 7; truncus arteriosus in 3; double outlet right ventricle in 2; interrupted aortic arch in 2; transposition of the great arteries in 2. Thirty patients had isolated infundibular VSD without conotruncal cardiac defect:perimembranous infundibular VSD in 15; subarterial infundibular VSD in 9; muscular infundibular VSD in 6. Chromosome 22q11 deletion was observed in 8 patients(male 5, female 3):TOF 2; VSD with pulmonary atresia 4; truncus arteriosus 1; perimembranous infundibular VSD 1. All of the patients with chromosome 21q11 deletion showed typical facial appearance. Low incidence was found of chromosome 22q11 deletion in patients with infundibular VSD without conotruncal cardiac defect than in those with conotruncal cardiac defect(3.3% vs 21.9%). CONCLUSION: These data indicate that a small proportion of isolated infundibular VSD is pathogenetically related to deletion of chromosome region 22q11.

10.A Case of Congenital Cytomegalovirus Encephalopathy with Patchy, Nodular Lesion of Periventricular area on Brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

Cytomegalovirus(CMV) is the most common cause of congenital viral infections. CMV infection occurs in 0.4% to 2.4% of all live births. CMV causes thin cerebral cortices, diminished volume of white matter, and delayed myelination, bringing on encephalopathy, which may be manifested as seizures in some cases. CT findings in CMV encephalopathy present as irregular intracranial calcifications of the periventricular area. Recently, there are increasingly more reports about MRI findings in CMV encephalopathy and common findings of the encephalopathy are periventricular cysts and dilated lateral ventricles. We experienced a case of congenital CMV encephalopathy with patchy, nodular lesions of the periventricular area on magnetic resonance imaging(MRI). We report this case with a review of associated literature.
