1.Improvement of Health Indicators after Participating in Health Promotion Program of General Hospital Staff: A Pilot Study

BACKGROUND:
An 8-week health program is achieved for health providers in a general hospital in Seoul to verify whether health parameters are enhanced by improving life habits. We want to examine the effect of this program with measuring health parameters and exercise ability. This study is performed as a pilot study, and the goal is to introduce the outcome of health program with experimental methods.
METHODS:
Participants of this research consist of 42 health providers who were overweight, and they enrolled an 8-week health program in 2015. They took a class about improving eating habits and recorded daily diet. Moreover, they implemented exercise program with encouraging active participation by rewarding members who attended the program frequently.
RESULTS:
The result is analyzed with 31 participants who finished the program. There are 4 men whose physical indices correspond with the criteria of metabolic syndrome. Otherwise, 27 women have physical indices below the criteria. The result indicates that physical indices would not reveal meaningful changes. However, basal fitness comprised of flexibility, sit-up, and back muscle strength implies meaningful improvement.
CONCLUSIONS
Even though there were some problems to revise in exercise intervention, it was accomplished systematically while nutrition intervention was not controlled strictly. In addition, factors including inspiring the enrollment of men and extending the period of program should be considered to improve the next program. The final goal of the health promoting hospital is to improve the health of health providers by sustaining this program with developing exercise and nutrition intervention in detail.

9.Effect of ionizing radiation at low dose on transgenerational carcinogenesis by epigenetic regulation.

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of ionizing radiation (IR) exposure of parents on carcinogenesis of the next generation focusing on the epigenetic perspective to clarify the relationship between radiation dose and carcinogenesis in F1 generation SD rats. F1 generations from pregnant rats (F0) who were exposed to gamma rays were divided into three groups according to the dose of radiation: 10 rad, 30 rad, and untreated. They were intraperitoneally injected with 50 mg/kg of diethylnitrosamine (DEN). Carcinogenesis was analyzed by examining expression levels of tumor suppressor genes (TSG) and other related genes by methylation-specific polymerase chain reaction (MSP). DNA methylation in liver tissues was evaluated to discern epigenetic regulation of transgenerational carcinogenesis vulnerability following IR exposure. Numerous studies have proved that transcriptional inactivation due to hypermethylation of TSG preceded carcinogenesis. Results of this study revealed hypermethylation of tumor suppressor gene SOCS1 in group treated with 30 rad. In addition, genes related to DNA damage response pathway (GSTP1, ATM, DGKA, PARP1, and SIRT6) were epigenetically inactivated in all DEN treated groups. In the case of proto-oncogene c-Myc, DNA hypermethylation was identified in the group with low dose of IR (10 rad). Results of this study indicated that each TSG had different radiation threshold level (dose-independent way) and DEN treatment could affect DNA methylation profile irrelevant of ionizing radiation dose.

10.Affecting Factors of Secondhand Smoke Exposure in Korea: Focused on Different Exposure Locations.

Exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) not only can cause serious illness, but is also an economic and social burden. Contextual and individual factors of non-smoker exposure to SHS depend on location. However, studies focusing on this subject are lacking. In this study, we described and compared the factors related to SHS exposure according to location in Korea. Regarding individual factors related to SHS exposure, a common individual variable model and location-specific variable model was used to evaluate SHS exposure at home/work/public locations based on sex. In common individual variables, such as age, and smoking status showed different relationships with SHS exposure in different locations. Among home-related variables, housing type and family with a single father and unmarried children showed the strongest positive relationships with SHS exposure in both males and females. In the workplace, service and sales workers, blue-collar workers, and manual laborers showed the strongest positive association with SHS exposure in males and females. For multilevel analysis in public places, only SHS exposure in females was positively related with cancer screening rate. Exposure to SHS in public places showed a positive relationship with drinking rate and single-parent family in males and females. The problem of SHS embodies social policies and interactions between individuals and social contextual factors. Policy makers should consider the contextual factors of specific locations and regional and individual context, along with differences between males and females, to develop effective strategies for reducing SHS exposure.
