The anterior discectomy is widely accepted method for removal of the herniated disc material of cervical spine due to direct visualization of the lesion site. In addition, it is believed to prevent recurrence of herniation, progression of degenerative change, and to preserve normal cervical lordosis after the fusion. For more effective anterior fusion and early postoperative ambulation without prolonged external support, internal fixation technique was introducsuspected to influence the result of operation, the type of bone graft and age of the patient may be the effective factors to the late result. ed. Authors reviewed 36 patients with cervical disc herniation and evaluated the result of anteior discectomy and fusion with plate fixation. With a mean follow up of 34 months, there were remarkable symptomatic improvement at most instances and bony union in situ within 3 months in all cases after the operation. Disclosed complications were 2 cases of hoarseness which was improved spontaneously, and 1 case of dysphagia. At the comparison of the effect of the factors which were suspected to influence the result of operation , the type of bone graft and age of the patient may be the effective factors to the late result.

In a series of paleo-parasitological investigations, we have been able to obtain invaluable data on parasite infection patterns prevalent among the Joseon (1392-1910) people in Korea. Thus far we have established that the Joseon people were in fact heavily infected by various species of parasites, though precise patterns and exact statuses of infection in specific town and cities have proved elusive. In the present study, relevant historical documentation was obtained and examined, shedding light on some of the operative socio-cultural factors that might have played a role in inducing a high infection prevalence of Ascaris, a soil-transmitted roundworm, in Joseon society. On this evidentiary basis, we could confirm that the recycling of human feces as fertilizer and the habit of eating raw vegetables were both closely related to infection. These factors were sufficient to maintain the life cycle of Ascaris, there by perpetuating a cycle of infection and reinfection among the Joseon inhabitants. Overall, this study demonstrated the value of close medical-scientist / historian interdisciplinary collaboration infacilitating comprehensive and meaningful paleo-parasitological findings and interpretations.

The authors presented a clinical review on 67 cases of lagophthalmos in leprosy, who were treated in Leprosy Mission Hospital from 1970 to 1978. The static procedure was performed on 59 eyes of 45 patients. The tarsorraphy was simple and quick method, and has hitherto been the main stay of surgical procedure employed for correction of lagophthalmos. Although technically a simple procedure, its disadvantages are permanent narrowing of palpebral fissure, epiphora and chronic conjunctivitis due to exposure of the bulbar conjunctiva on effort or during sleep. The sling technique with silk was temporary in its effectiveness. The sling technique with fascia lata also tender to stretch in time resulting in recurrence of the ectropion. For these reason static procedure is considered unsatisfactory as a definite surgical procedure for the correction of lagophthalmos in leprosy. The lagophthalmos in leprosy was not found in association with temporal nerve paralysis. So authors performed temporal muscle transfer on 18 eyes of 12 patients, the same as originally devised by Gillies. 12 out of 18 eyes had no residual lagophthalmos. 3 eyes had fair results due to low tension of the transfer. One patient (2 eyes), who was operated during acute phase of lepra reaction, had poor results due to low tension of the transfer. One eye was a failure due to adhesion and infection of the transfer. Ectropion of the lower lid in one eye was produced as a result of placing the fascial strip too far away from the lid margin. The Gillies technique requires wide surgical field and takes a long time to operate. Nevertheless, this technique to activate a circumocular sling of its own attached fascia restores natural contour of the eye and enables the patient to close his eye completely on effort or during sleep. This surgical procedure was permanent in result and considered the method of choice for the correction of lagophthalmos in leprosy. Even when it fails, Gillies technique for lagophthalmos is much better than static procedure.

A total of 48 cases of tuberculous lesion in the lymph nodes (43 cases), lung (3 cases) and soft tissue (2 cases), was subjected to fine needle aspiration cytology(FNAC). The age of the patients ranged from 19 to 77 year-old (average 33.6 years in age) and the male to female ratio was 1: 4. Thirty-four cases (70.8%) demonstrated distinct granulomatous reaction with or without caseation necrosis, nine cases (18.8%) showed no granulomas, but large amount of necrotic debris with numerous polymorphonuclear cells and histiocytes, and five cases (10.4%) revealed acellular material only. The overall AFB positivity in smears was 62.5%. In areas associated with granulomatous reaction and necrosis, AFB positivity was 55.8%, while it was 80.0% in cases with acellular necrotic material. There were 2 cases of parasitic infestation which could not be easily differentiated from tuberculosis based on aspiration smears only.

1. Apparent ocular findings obtained from a survey on 213 workers exposed to radiant energy were chronic hyperemic pigmented blepharoconjunctivitis (36.3%) which was supposed as a chronic abiotic and thermal lesion of photophthalmia, and pigmentation (melanosis) of bulbar conjunctiva near the limbus (11.5%). 2. Pterygium also was observed with high percentage (26.9%) and external irritative exposures ineluding ultra-violet rays were supposed to play a causative role in producing it. 3. Conjunctival and corneal foreign bodies (87.4%) were the most frequently observed among workers, due probably to improper protective eye equipment. 4. Everyone case of leucoma cornea traumatica, Ieucoma adherens traumatica, burned scar of the lid skin, healed scar of macular burn, macular hole after contusion and post-enucleated anophthalmos after rupture of eye ball was observed. 5. None of cataract case in early stage could be found because the slit-lamp biomicroscope was not available in this screening examination. 6. By ophthalmoscopy, 19 cases of hypertensive retinopathies were observed. 7. Comparison this result with author's former result obtained in 1966 also was made. 8. It is advisable to wear standard protective eye equipment and to administer health education to these workers.

Infantile hemangioendothelioma of the liver is a common vascular tumor in infancy. The tumor is usually multinodular or diffuse and classified into two types. We present a case of infantile hemangioendothelioma of the liver, which predominantly consists of type 2. A 4-month-old female was admitted for an evaulation of an abdominal distension. A CT scan of the liver showed a multinodular mass. The right lobectomy was done. Grossly, the mass consisted of round nodules ranging from 2cm to 5cm in diameter. Microscopically, the tumor revealed proliferation of small vascular channels lined by endothelial cells. Bizarre cells and mitotic cells were frequently noted. Vesicular nuclei and multilayering of the endothelial cells were also noted.
