1.Effect of Bovine and Human Lactoferrin on MA 104 Cell Infected with Human Rotavirus.

It has long been known that lactoferrin prevents human beings from infection of virus. To prove this activity of lactoferrin, we evaluated the activities of different lactoferrins to an isolate human rotavirus K-21. Bovine lactoferrin inhibited infection of K-21 to MA-104 cell at the concentration of 25.9 microM whereas bovine hydrolysed lactoferrin prevented rotavirus infection at 103.8 microM. However human lactoferrin prevented infection of K-21 at the concentration of 217.5 microM. These data suggested that lactoferrin activity may be unaffected by the intestinal digestive enzymes and bovine lactoferrin is more active than human lactoferrin with respect to prevention of rotavirus infection.

3.Serotype and Nucleotide Analysis of Human Rotavirus Isolates in Korea.

Rotaviruses belong to Reoviridae causes diarrhea in human beings as well as domestic animals. This study was conducted to see what type of human rotaviruses are distributed in Seoul and Kyung-gi province. Twenty two of 81 patients showed rotavirus positive with diagnostic kit and RNA electropherosis. We isolated all of rotaviruses from the patients. Electropherotypes of 22 isolates showed 4:2:3 :2 patters whereas those migration patterns were long type. All of those isolates belonged to group 4. Twenty out of 22 isolates reacted with monoclonal antibodies specific to G1, P1A and subgroup II, whereas rest of them, 4-29 and K-30 reacted with subgroup I specific monoclonal antibody. The nucleotide sequence of an isolate K-21 showed 98~100% and 90~96% homologies with those of Wa and KU strain, respectively.

5.Toxic Hepatitis Induced by Occupational Dimethylacetamide Exposure.

Dimethylacetamide is widely used in the production of plastics, resins, synthetic fibers, and gums and in purification and crystallization processes. Inhalation of the vapor or skin absorption of the liquid of dimethylacetamide(DMAC) can cause liver damage. Toxic hepatitis possibly attributable to DMAC exposure occurred in seven works among 178 employees who had worked on a new spandex-fiber production line. A large amount of DMAC is used as a spinning solvent for synthetic fibers in the factory. The patients were aged 23-47 years old and composed of five males and two females. They were involved in the process of polymerization(1 patient), spinning(1), take-up(4) and packaging(1). The mean duration of exposure was 10 weeks. They experienced fatigue, dizziness and jaundice. The patients showed elavated total bilirubin, alanine aminotransferase(ALT), and aspartate aminotransferase(AST) levels. The serologic test for viral hepatitis A, B and C were negative, as were the abdominal ultrasonographic scans. Based on the presumptive diagnosis of DMAC-induced toxic hepatitis, they were removed from the workplaces. One or two months after removal from the work, the transaminase levels returned to normal. The patients had no history of significant alcohol use, blood transfusion, recent medication, and drug abuse. As a result, authors could not find any attributable cause of toxic hepatitis but the toxicity by DMAC exposure.

6.Related factors of high frequency hearing loss in the noise-exposed male workers.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the study was to assess the risk factors assumed to be related to the high frequency hearing loss in the noise-exposed male workers. METHODS: 712 occupationally noise-exposed male workers were included in this cross sectional study. The subjects filled out a questionnaire on the history of noise exposure, hearing protection, otologic diseases, tobacco smoking, and were tested on height, weight, hematocrit, serum total cholesterol level, fasting plasma glucose level and arterial blood pressure level. Pure tone audiometry and otoscopy were conducted and the subjects were allocated into two groups according to whether they had 4000 Hi hearing loss or not. RESULTS: The multiple logistic regression analysis showed that military noise exposure, poor wearing status of the hearing protection devices, increased age, long noise exposure duration, mean arterial pressure less than 80mmHg, high fasting plasma sugar are the factors significantly related to high frequency hearing loss (P<0.05). On the contrary, there was no significant relationship between noise intensity, body mass index, serum total cholesterol level, smoking and high frequency hearing loss. Low hematocrit was shown to be a significant factor with a p-value less than 0.1. CONCLUSIONS: High frequency hearing loss in the noise-exposed male workers is related to military noise exposure, use of hearing protection devices, age, noise exposure length, fasting glucose level and mean arterial pressure, in this order. Appropriate use of the hearing protection devices has a great impact on the prevention of the noise-induced hearing loss.

7.Analysis of Correction Loss after Pedicle Subtraction Osteotomy in Patients with Sagittal Imbalance: Radiologic Aspects.

PURPOSE: To validate the surgical principles by analyzing the cause of a correction loss after pedicle subtraction osteotomy in patients with a sagittal imbalance in the radiological aspects, retrospectively. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty cases were analyzed radiographycally according to the presence (Group A) or absence (Group B) of the lower mobile segment and anterior column support performed (Group A2) or not (Group A1), respectively. RESULTS: The overall correction loss of the total fused part appeared to increase in group A (p=0.025) and the degree of lordosis of the osteotomy site showed an almost zero correction loss in group A and B. No statistic difference of the correction loss of the upper segment of the osteotomy site between the two groups was found (p=0.138). The correction loss of the lower segment of osteotomy site increased statistically more in goup A (p=0.014). The correction loss in group A occurred more in the lower segment than in the upper segment and the correction loss of the lower segment in group A1 appeared to have a better correlation than group A2 (p=0.012). CONCLUSION: Correction loss occurs at the intervertebral disc of the mobile segment. It is considered desirable to have anterior column support to all lower segment of the osteotomy site, because the correction loss increases more in the lower segment than in the upper segment.
