1.Hepatic Parasitic Abscess Caused by Clonorchiasis: Unusual CT Findings of Clonorchiasis.

Clonorchiasis is caused by a chronic infestation of liver flukes, Clonorchis sinensis, and these reside mainly in the medium- and small-sized intrahepatic bile ducts. Therefore, diffuse, uniform, minimal or mild dilatation of these bile ducts, particularly in the periphery, without dilatation of the extrahepatic bile duct is the typical finding on several imaging modalities. We report here on the CT findings of an unusual case of hepatic parasitic abscess that was caused by clonorchiasis; this malady mimicked cholangiocarcinoma, and there was no dilatation of the intrahepatic bile ducts.

2.A Case of Facial Palsy Following Tooth Extraction.

Facial palsy following tooth extraction is rare and its mechanism is unclear. Possible mechanisms are direct anesthesia of facial nerve, compression and ischemia of facial nerve during edema, neurotoxicity of local anesthetic solution, viral reactivation and ascending infection. Viral reactivation and ascending infection are most likely mechanisms among them. Therefore, it is important to use an antiviral agent combined with steroid for treatment of dental origin facial palsy. We report our recent experience with one case of facial palsy that followed tooth extraction.

3.Early adulthood: an overlooked age group in national sodium reduction initiatives in South Korea.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: South Korean's sodium consumption level is more than twice the upper limit level suggested by the WHO. Steep increases in the prevalence of hypertension and cardiovascular disease in Korea necessitate more effective sodium reduction programs. This study was conducted in order to compare sodium intake-related eating behaviors and key psychosocial factors according to age group and gender. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Using an online survey, a total of 1,564 adults (20-59 years old) considered to be geographically representative of South Korea were recruited and surveyed. The major outcomes were perceived behaviors, knowledge, intentions, and self-efficacy related to sodium intake. RESULTS: The results show that perceived behavior and level of self-efficacy related to low sodium consumption differed by age and gender. Female participants showed better behavior and intention towards low sodium intake than male counterparts. Young participants in their 20s showed the lowest intention to change their current sodium intake as well as lowest self-efficacy measures. CONCLUSIONS: Future sodium reduction interventions should be developed with tailored messages targeting different age and gender groups. Specifically, interventions can be planned and implemented at the college level or for workers in their early career to increase their intention and self-efficacy as a means of preventing future health complications associated with high sodium intake.

4.Possibility of Discriminating the Presence of Tinnitus through Repeated Tinnitograms.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The evaluation of tinnitus is becoming increasingly important in assessing the degree of disability. However, until now, there are no tools to verify the presence of tinnitus. The aim of this study was to identify the possibilities in discriminating the presence of tinnitus through tinnitus test, pitch match test and loudness balance test. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Typically, 50 patients who have suffered from continuous tinnitus and 20 subjects with normal hearing ability who did not suffer from tinnitus were selected for the present investigation. All the patients underwent the tests for pitch match and loudness balance, which were replicated thrice with 1-minute intervals with a TDH 49 headphone and an oribiter model 922, GN otometrics in a soundproof room. Non-tinnitus group that didn't have tinnitus chose virtual tinnitus based on their own discretion. RESULTS: The most similar sounds mimicking tinnitus were of pure tone in both the groups. However, subjects of the tinnitus group were exposed to a greater variety of sounds than those of the non-tinnitus group. Moreover, the most common frequency of tinnitus was 4 and 8 kHz in the tinnitus group, but 1 kHz in the non-tinnitus group. The mean loudness of tinnitus was 7.28 dBSL in the tinnitus group and 13.6 dBSL in the non-tinnitus group. The loudness of tinnitus in the tinnitus group was less than that in the non-tinnitus group in a statistically significant manner (p<0.05). Loudness in each repeated tinnitus tests was identical in tinnitus group, but significantly different in non-tinnitus group (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: We concluded that repeated tinnitus tests for loudness matching were helpful in identifying the presence of tinnitus.

5.A Study on Sodium-related Dietary Attitude and Behaviors According to Sodium-related Nutrition Knowledge of University Students.

OBJECTIVES: Dietary life is closely associated with dietary attitude and diet-related knowledge. Particularly, dietary habit such as sodium intake can be affected by various dietary behaviors such as food choices, dietary attitude toward salty food and a preference for salty taste. The purpose of this study was to assess sodium-related nutrition knowledge and to identify sodium-related attitude and behaviors according to the level of sodium-related knowledge of university students. METHODS: Anthropometric measurements were provided by 408 students who participated in this study. The study participants answered questionnaires to provide information on general dietary behaviors, sodium-related dietary attitude and other behavioral factors. A total score of nutrition knowledge was used to categorize study participants in to two groups, namely, low level in sodium-related knowledge (LNaK) or high level in sodium-related knowledge (HNaK) and the attitude and the behaviors of students toward sodium intake were compared between these two groups. RESULTS: The ratio of female students in HNaK group was higher than that in the LNaK group. HNaK group had a higher score in checking nutrition label of processed food than the LNaK group. Total score of sodium-related attitude and behaviors of HNaK group were 34.81 and 32.75, respectively and these scores were significantly higher than that of the LNaK group whose scores were 32.57 and 30.57, respectively. Total energy intake was not different between two groups but the intakes of calcium, vitamin B2 and folate were higher in HNaK group than in the LNaK group. Correlation analysis adjusted for age and gender revealed that total score of sodium-related nutrition knowledge was positively correlated with total score of sodium-related attitude and behaviors. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, students who had high level of sodium-related nutrition knowledge had desirable attitude and behaviors toward sodium intake and these results can be considered in nutrition education for university students.

6.Changes of Mastoid Gas Physiology in Virtual Mastoidectomy Model.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: It is essential to understand gas physiology of mastoid cavity to study the pathophysiology of middle ear diseases, and the surface area and volume of mastoid mucosa are important parameters for evaluating gas physiology. However, the surface area and mastoid volume of the mastoid cavity have not been practically measured yet. Therefore, we measured and compared surface area and volume of the mastoid cavity before and after mastoidectomy using a virtual mastoidectomy model. SUBJECTS AND METHOD: We performed a virtual mastoidectomy using 10 cases of temporal bone CT indicating pneumatic mastoid. First, we removed all air cells after outlining with irregular AOI function after loading axial CT images to Image-Pro Plus 4.0. Then we filled the removed area with equal planes using local equalization filter. Finally, we calculated and compared the total surface area, volume and area to volume (A/V) ratio by estimating their circumference and area. RESULTS: The mean surface area of pneumatized mastoid cavity was 127.8 cm2 (range: 94.2-165.3 cm2), and the mean volume was 7.1 cm3 (range: 5.2-11.0 cm3). The mean surface area and volume were altered to 42.8 cm2 (range: 35.9-55.0 cm2) and 12.6 cm3 (range: 10.3-18.7 cm3), respectively, after virtual mastoidectomy. As a result, the A/V ratio decreased from 18 to 3.4 after a virtual mastoidectomy in the pneumatic mastoid cavity. CONCLUSION: When a complete mastoidectomy is performed in the pneumatic mastoid, the surface area is decreased by one third compared to a relatively minor increase in volume. Therefore, the surface area per unit volume is expected to greatly decrease after mastoidectomy. Some physiologic problems occurring after mastoidectomy could be more accurately explained using a virtual mastoidectomy model.

A case of infiltrative type of hepatic tuberculosis is presented. Ultrasonography revealed a very ill-margined, heterogenously low echoic lesion in the right hepatic lobe. CT scans demonstrated a very ill-defined, geographic, hypodense lesion with minimal contrast enhancement mimicking cholangiohepatitis or infiltrative tumor in the right hepatic lobe.

8.High Sodium Intake in Women with Metabolic Syndrome.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Metabolic syndrome and high sodium intake are associated with frequent cardiovascular events. Few studies have estimated sodium intake in subjects with metabolic syndrome by 24-hour urine sodium excretion. We evaluated sodium intake in individuals with metabolic syndrome. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Participants were recruited by random selection and through advertisement. Twenty four-hour urine collection, ambulatory blood pressure measurements, and blood test were performed. Sodium intake was estimated by 24-hour urine sodium excretion. Participants receiving antihypertensive medications were excluded from analysis. RESULTS: Among the 463 participants recruited, subjects with metabolic syndrome had higher levels of 24-hour urine sodium excretion than subjects without metabolic syndrome (p=0.0001). There was a significant relationship between the number of metabolic syndrome factors and 24-hour urine sodium excretion (p=0.001). The proportion of subjects with metabolic syndrome was increased across the tertile groups of 24-hour urine sodium excretion (p<0.0001). The association of high sodium intake and metabolic syndrome was significant only among women. Among the factors related to metabolic syndrome, body mass index had an independent association with 24-hour urine sodium excretion (p<0.0001). CONCLUSION: Women with metabolic syndrome exhibited significantly higher sodium intake, suggesting that dietary education to reduce sodium consumption should be emphasized for women with metabolic syndrome.
