PURPOSE: The loss of estrogen and progesterone receptors appeats to be associated with a progression to less differentiated and hormone-independent tumors. The gain of hormone independency over time even in estrogen receptor-positive tumors has become another obstacle to endocrine therapy for breast cancer. We tried to regain the hormone dependency in estrogen receptor-negative breast cancer cells by lipofecting estmgen receptor cDNA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The mutant human estrogen receptor cDNA (pSGS-HEO) was lipofected into estrogen receptor-negative human breast cancer cell line MDA-MB-231, in an attempt to restore their sensitivity to antiestrogen. Then the effects of 17p-estradiol and tamoxifen were studied by counting viable cell numbers after treating the lipofected cell line with either one or together. RESULTS: Culture medium cantaining phenol red, a weak estrogen, has growth advantages compared with culture medium without it. In both culture conditions, cell growth was most profoundly inhibited in 4 days after lipofection with mutant human estrogen receptor cDNA, which was overcome after that day. Tamoxifen, as an antiestrogen, showed a growth inhibitory effect slightly stronger tban combined conditions of tamoxifen and 17- estradiol compared to estrogen-treated group and to control, and the inhibitory effect was lasted 4 days. CONCLUSION: The temporary induction of estrogen receptor by lipofection with pSGS-HEO on estrogen receptor-negative human breast cancer cell line MDA-MB-231 showed negative growth control on these cells by tamoxifen, indicating that liposome-mediated estrogen receptor transfection may be used as a novel therapeutic strategy for hormane independent human breast cancers in the near future.

Behcet Syndrome*

Transcatheter infusion of absolute ethanol was applied clinically in 3 cases of artificial embolization; 25yrsold female with bilateral renal angiomyolipoma, 19yrs old female with right paralumbar liposarcoma and 25 yrs oldmale with hypernephroma of right kidney. Selective or subselective manual infusion was made and 9 to 22cc of pureethanol was delivered in a speed of 1 to 2cc per second. The sclerosing effect of absolute ethanol was potent.However, all 3 cases revealed mild post-emboliaztion syndrome.

The transarterial embolization has been widely used to control bleeding. It has a variety of clinical utility; to reduce bleeding on the surgical field, to reduce the size of malignant tumor as a preopearative treatment, to treat arteriovenous malformation or arterial aneurysm as a curative method and to promote life qua' ity of patient with diffuse or multiple hepatocellular carcinoma as a palliative treatment, etc. With the advance of modem technology, various embolic materials have been also developed. IIowever, it has not- been -fully investigated of histopathologic changes of the embolized organs according to the embolic materials used. This study was undertaken to investigate the histopathologic changes of embolized renal artery in rabbit by various embolic materials, according to each embolic material and to time passed by after embolization. Of the 5 arteries embolized by ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer(EVAL), one showed abscess formation in embolized kidney. The other 4 allowed to perform further pathologic study: within a week after embolization there was no any specific change in vessels, however, r,unimal endothelial hypertrophy was observed following 2 weeks of embolization. Of the 8 renal arteries embolized by N-buthyl-2-cyanoacrylate(Histoacryl), 4 showed total occlusion of the main renal arteries as well as renal infarction, which reflects the strong adhesiveness of Histoacryl to vascular wall. PURPOSE: To analyze angiearchitecture of arteriovenous malformations(AV malformation) in order to clarify the angiegraphic risk factors for intracerebral hemorrhage and other nonhemorrhagic symptoms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty-five patients with angiegraphically-proved brain arteriovenous malformation were included in this study. Retrospective review of clinical history and angiography was done. Topographic analysis and evaluation of 17 angiearchitectural characteristics were conducted. RESULTS: Deep-seated and cortico-callosal type, small nidus size, intranidal pouch, one draining vein, deep venous drainage only venous stenosis and venous aneurysm were the most discriminating or predictive characteristics of hemorrhage in brain arteriovenous malformation. And those with large nidus size, dural supply and venous hypertension were correlated with nonhemorrhagic symptoms such as seizure, headache and neurologic deficit. CONCLUSION: Detailed analysis of the angiearchitecture of brain arteriovenous malformations is needed to identify the features that are correlated with prognostic implications for the treatment of patients with ^V malformations.

The authors analyzed 30 patients whose celiac artery or its branches were dissected during the procedure of transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and were followed up angiographically. The incidence of arterial dissection was 1.25%. The dissection occurred most frequently in the celiac artery (40% 12/30) and the proper hepatic artery(28% 7/30). The frequency of arterial dissection was affected by the status of the vessel and the experience of the operator. The follow-up angiography revealed complete recanalization in 40% (12/30), irregularity and narrowing of the lumen in 23% (7/30), pseudoaneurysm formation in 23%(7/30), and complete obstruction in 13% (4/30) of the cases. The rate of recanalization in the celiac artery was lower than that of any other arteries in our series. Recamalization to a certain degree without therapeutic intervention was observed in 72% of the dissected arteries enabling and contributing to subsequent successful TAE within 2 months in 78% of the patients with the dissection.
