1.Study of Spinal Braces on the Electrical Activity of Muscles of the Trunk in Low Back Syndrome
The Journal of the Korean Orthopaedic Association 1981;16(2):237-244
Lumbar braces, cast jackets and lumbar corsets are commonly prescribed for the relief of low back pain or the prevention of instability of lumbar or lumbosacral vertebrae. These devices have been presumed to achive their effect by (1) decreasing movement at the involved intervertebral joints, (2) shifting a portion of the load from the spine to the rest of the trunk by compressing the abdomen, (3) decreasing lumbar lordosis and therefore, mechanical stress on the spine and (4) providing sufficient support to allow relaxation of the muscles of the trunk. But it is doubtful that lumbar braces or corsets significantly decrease movement between lumbar vertebrae. To maintain the stability of the lumbar and lumbosacral spine, abdominal muscles and intrinsic muscles of the back play an important role. When these muscles weaken the lumbar lordosis becomes exaggerated possibly bringing about degenerative changes in the articular processes and approximation of the spinous processes. In severe cases results in the so-called kissing spine which causes low back pain. The pain may be relieved by use of lumbo-sacral corsets or knight braces, which diminish lordosis. However, there has been no scientific report on adequate types of braces, duration of use or muscle weakness resulting from its use as yet. The prupose of this study is to provide a theoretical braces for, planning adequate prevention and early treatment, so that labour loss from retirement or change of job due to low back pain could be minimized, permitting early return to employment and resumption of activities of daily living. In other words, this study concentrates on the indications for use and selection of which will produce optimum results in the treatment of patients with low back pain. The EMG was taken immediately after admission, and after 3 weeks of bed rest accompanied by pelvic traction with or without heating, and also it was taken after 6 weeks of use of brace. The results obtained from this study were as follows; 1. After bed rest the EMG activities were increased in back muscles, such as longissimus dorsi, multifidus and iliocostalis lumborum and in abdominal muscles of internus abdominis while decreased in rectus abdominis. 2. There has been no significant change after use of corset in acute cases while the muscle activities. were increased after use of lumbar corset in chronic cases. 3. Rectus abdominis was most senstively influenced by bed rest or use of brace both in acute and chronic cases. And it was the last to recover probably because it does not contract in ordinary alow walking. 4. Knight brace was considered to be preferable to lumbar corset in acute cases with evidence of weakness in abdominal muscles by EMG. 5. There was no difference between bed rest and use of brace in patients who had radiculopathy with functional difficulties or not.

2.Nurses' Safety Control according to Patient Safety Culture and Perceived Teamwork.
Journal of Korean Academy of Nursing Administration 2016;22(2):199-208
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of patient safety culture and perceived teamwork on the safety control of nurses. METHODS: This study was conducted as a descriptive cross-sectional survey with 141 nurses who worked in a tertiary hospital with over 1,000 beds in S city, Gyeonggi province. Data were collected using structured questionnaires from July 20, to July, 31, 2015. RESULTS: The average work period for nurses participating in the research was 8.84 years. The perceived teamwork and patient safety culture were positively correlated with safety control. The regression model with patient safety culture, perceived teamwork and clinical career against safety control was statistically significant (F=10.16, p<.001). This model also explained 37.1% of safety control (Adj. R2=.37). Especially, communication (β=.27, p=.023) of patient safety culture, clinical career (β=.26, p<.001), mutual support (β=.24, p=.042), and team leadership (β=.24, p=.018) in perceived teamwork were identified as factors influencing safety control. CONCLUSION: The findings of this study imply that a broad approach including teamwork and patient safety culture should be considered to improve the safety control for nurses.

A clinical and histologic survey was done on 71 cases of basal cel carcinoma(BCC) filed at Department of Clinical Fathology, Kang Nam, Han Kang, and Kang Dong Sacred Heart Hospital during past 13 year s from 1979 to 1991. The results were summerized as follows: 1. Of all malignant skin tumors BCC accounted for 31.6%. The frequency of BCC in the total number of outpatients visiting the Department of Dermatology was 0.06%. 2. The ratio of men to women with HCC was 1:1.03. 83.8% of the pat.ients with BCC were older than the age of l0 years with the mean age of 56.9 years. 3. 83.8% of the BCC appared in the face, especially on the nose(25.4%), eyelid(20.3%). 4. On the basis of classification of Lever et al, the solid type(66.7% ) was the most com mon histologic pattern, followed by the adenoid(8.8%), pigmented(8.8%), and etc. By the classification of Farmer et al, the nodulocystic type(35.1% ) was the most common histologic pattern followed by infiltrative(31.6%), adenoid(8.8%), pigmented(8.8%), and etc. By the classification on Sexton et al, in the order of decreasing frequency, liistologic subtypes were the nodular(43.9%), mixed (22.8%), infiltrative(19.3%), supeficial(3.5%), morpheic(3.5%), and micronodular(3.5%).

Korean Journal of Pathology 1985;19(2):207-213
Burkitt's lymphoma with a frankly leukemic picture is an extremely rare condition, and usually has a very acute course with a poor prognosis. The authors experienced two cases of Burkitt's lymphoma developed acute leukemia. The first case was 8 years-old boy who had rapidly growing large abdominal mass, which revealed typical Burkitt's lymphoma with characteristic "starrysky" pattern. The second case was 20 year old male who had not definite tumor mass. Their peripheral blood and bone marrow aspiration revealed acute leukemia with multiple vacuolated lymphoblast of Burkitt's type. We report these cases with brief review of literatures.

Journal of Korean Academy of Nursing Administration 2010;16(3):229-239
PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the impact of nursing professionalism on the nursing performance and retention intention among psychiatric mental health nurses. METHODS: As a descriptive correlational study, this study sampled 206 psychiatric mental health nurses in six hospitals in Seoul and Gyeonggi area through convenience sampling. Data were collected from March 2 to 31, 2009 using a self-report questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS WIN 16.0. RESULTS: In the subscales of professionalism, the 'Sense of calling' had the highest mean score while the 'Professional organization' had the lowest mean score. A significant positive correlation was observed in nursing professionalism, nursing performance and retention intention. According to an analysis on the impact of each subscale of nursing professionalism on nursing performance and retention intention, the 'Sense of calling' and 'Autonomy' were the most significant predictor variable. CONCLUSION: The results confirmed that the improvement of psychiatric mental health nurses' professionalism increases their nursing performance and retention intention and the 'Sense of calling' and 'Autonomy' are critical prediction factors. It is necessary to come up with a strategy which strengthens nursing professionalism in order to improve psychiatric mental health nurses' performance and retention intention.

PURPOSE: This study examined the effects of health status and health behaviors on depression in married female immigrants in South Korea. METHODS: Sampling 316 immigrant women from the Philippines, Vietnam, China, and other Asian countries, a cross-sectional research design was used with self-report questionnaires that assessed sociodemographic characteristics, health status, health behaviors, and depression. RESULTS: There were significant differences in stillbirth experience, induced abortion, morbidity, perceived health status, meal skipping, and physical activity between depressed and nondepressed immigrant women. After adjusting for sociodemographic variables, stillbirth experience, poorer perceived health status, more meal skipping, and less physical activity were associated with greater depressive symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: Both health status and health behaviors had significant impacts on depression, suggesting that development of nursing interventions and educational programs should be targeted towards improving maternal health, healthy lifestyle, and subjective health perception to promote married female immigrants' psychological well-being.

Journal of Korean Medical Science 1994;9(5):382-387
Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) is a life threatening complication that may occur following allogenic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) in the patients with aplastic anemia, leukemia or genetic immunodeficiency. It has been known that GVHD occurs approximately 70% of recipients of BMT in western countries but no definite incidence has been reported in Korea. In our St. Mary's Hospital, GVHD occurs in about 30% of BMT recipients. Histopathologically the acute phase skin shows diffuse lymphocytic infiltrates in the upper dermis with extensive exocytosis. Scattered throughout the epidermis are many degenerated keratinocytes, which are often associated with one or more satellite lymphocytes (satellite cell necrosis). In the chronic phase, acanthosis, eosinophilic keratinocytes resembling colloid bodies and mononuclear cell infiltrates in the upper dermis are noted. We reviewed 5 cases of acute GVHD and 6 cases of chronic GVHD. All patients received allogenic BMT from Jan. 1, 1992 to July 1, 1993. Ten patients were male and one was female. The mean age was 34 (20-70). The pathologic diagnosis was 3 cases of CML, 2 of ALL, 2 of AML (FAB M2), 2 of aplastic anemia, 1 of CLL and 1 of AML (FAB M5). The interval from BMT to GVHD varied from 14 days to 4 years (median 220 days). The skin and GI tract were involved in all eleven cases. Ten cases were histologically proven by skin biopsies, and two cases by salivary gland and colonic biopsies, respectively. The histological findings of the skin, salivary gland and colonic biopsieds were described. Immunohistochemical stain of the skin was done using CD4, CD8, HLA DR and Leu 7 antibodies.
