1.Study on Fatigue, Stress and Burnout of Pregnant Nurses.
Korean Journal of Occupational Health Nursing 2013;22(3):208-217
PURPOSE: This study is a correlative study to assess the relationships of fatigue, stress, and burnout among the pregnant nurses in hospital. METHODS: The subjects in this study were 103 nurses aged between 22 and 40 who were confirmed as pregnant by the OBGY (Obstetrics and Gynecology) hospital and working at medical facilities located in J-province of G city during the period of July 15 through September 15, 2010. RESULTS: The level of fatigue of pregnant nurses showed an average of 5.60 out of 10 points, and the level of stress showed an average of 25.91. In terms of burnout, the average was 2.72 out of 5 points. The results of the correlative study to assess relationships among fatigue, stress and burnout showed significant positive correlation between burnout and fatigue (r=.47, p<.001) and stress (r=.53, p<.001) and between stress and fatigue (r=.58, p<.001). Therefore, the results show that increased level of fatigue and stress leads to increased level of burnout. CONCLUSION: The results of the study showed that higher level of fatigue and stress led to higher level of burnout. Therefore, to minimize the burnout of pregnant nurses, many efforts are required in the hospital policy and for the strategies to reduce burnout.

To a patient suffering from intractable pain due to the terminal state of cervix cancer, 7% phenol-glycerine solution was injected through the L2-L3 interspace. We obtained a good result of pain relief, but motor paralysis developed.

Korean Journal of Clinical Pathology 1997;17(4):598-608
BACKGROUND: Candida species are one ol the major pathogens causing opportunistic infection. The need for a standardized. and clinically relevant method for antifungal susceptibility testing has become more increased because resistance to antifungal agents is now being reported with increasing frequency. The purposes of this study were to measure the minimal inhibitory concentrations actions amphotericin B, flucytosine and fluconazole of clinical isolates of Candida species, and to evaluate broth microdilution method as a more efficient test method, compared with NCCLS standard broth macrodilution. METHODS: The minlmal Inhibitory concentrations of C. parapsilosis ATCC 90018, C, albicans ATCC 90028 and 32 Candida isolates from Korea University Hospital were evaluated against amphotericin B, flucytosine and fluconazole by broth macrodilution and microdilution methods. RESULTS: The minimal inhibitory concentrations of Candida species ranged 0.25 to 1.0 microgram/mL for amphotericin B, 0.125 to 2.0 microgram/mL for flucytosine and 0.125 to 64 microgram/mL for fluconazole. The percent of agreement between NCCLS standard broth macrodilution and microdilution was highest when inoculum size was 0.5-2.5x103 CFU/mL and incubation time was 48 hours, and one fold dilution agreement was 100% for amphotericin B, 100% for flucytosine and 88-96% for fluconazole. CONCLUSIONS: This study showed good agreement of results of broth microdilution test with those of macrodilution, and suggested that broth microdilution method is an accessible and useful method and can be substituted for broth macrodilutlon method with the expectation of good results.

Korean Journal of Pathology 1994;28(1):1-7
c-erbB-2 oncogene is a normal cellular proto-oncogene coding transmembrane glycoprotein structurally similar to the epidermal growth factor receptor. Amplification of this oncogene in a variety of human adenocarcinomas has been reported and is particularly well documented in breast carcinoma. It has been suggested that amplification of this oncogene is indicative of poor prognosis and is valuable only second to the lymph node status. Using immunohistochemical staining for the c-erbB-2 protein, overexpression of this protein was analysed in 228 primary breast cancer specimens and the frequency of overexpression and the relationship between overexpression and the other established prognostic variables are evaluated. Ninty three cases out of 228 cases(40.8%) show postive oncoprotein overexpression and using the chi-squared test for a trend, a significant correlation was found between c-erbB-2 protein staining and the histological grade, lymph node status, and estrogen receptor status(P<0.05). No significant association was found between staining and the patient's age and tumor size. Most of the tumors with histological types known to have good prognosis showed negative expression. Above findings strongly suggest that expression of c-erbB-2 oncogene is another independent indicator of poor prognosis in breast carcinoma.

Recently cryogenic therapy is widely used for the treatment of herpes simplex keratitis. We had experimental studies on the effect of iodine cautery and cryocautery upon the regeneration of corneal ulceration. On 10 adult albino rabbits, one eye was treated by iodine, and the other by cryocautery in area of 0.6cm X 0.6cm. The epithelium in this area was completly removed by cotton applicator. There after, the rate of epithelial regeneration was observed every 12 hours. The results were as follows: (1) The average period of complete epithelial regeneration was 48 hours in animal treated with cryocautery and 78 hours in animals treated with iodine cautery. This difference is statistically highly significant. (2) Corneal opacity was not demonstrated in eyes treated with cryocautery. Six eyes treated with iodine, however, showed various degree of corneal opacities. These results support the view that the healing time in human herpes simplex keratitis is shortened in patients with cryocautery as compared with iodine.

10.The Effectiveness of VAS for Evaluation of Pulmonary Condition in Postoperative Patients.
Journal of Korean Academy of Fundamental Nursing 1994;1(1):69-76
This study was designed and undertaken to find out the effectiveness of VAS for evaluation of general anesthetic postoperative pulmonary function. We compared the degree of perceived pulmonary function recovery with peak expiratory flow at postoperative 72 hours of subjects. The subjects of this study were collected 38 patients who had received upper abdominal operation in St, Paul Hospital, Catholic University Medical College, and Kangnam Scared Heart Hospital and Kangdong Scared Heart Hospital, Hallym University. Data collection period was from June 15th, to August 7th, 1992. The degree of pulmonary recovery function was measured with peak expiratory at 72 hours postoperatively. The degree of perceived pulmonary function of the patient was measured with ten points visual analog scale at 72 hours postoperatively. Peak expiratory flow and visual analog score was analyzed with Pearson correlation. Peak expiratory flow was expressed as a ratio of preoperative value. The result was as follows : The recovery of pulmonary function and the degree of perceived pulmonary function of the patient at 72 hours postoperatively was revealed high correlation(r=.84). The above result suggested that patients with general anesthetic upper abdominal surgery should evaluate recovery of pulmonary function making use of VAS. We know that VAS is very useful in postoperative patients. We perceived that VAS is to take up a positive attitude of patients. Nurse should furnish the nursing care objectively and scientifically to patients. As VAS was economic and simple, VAS should be advised for wider application.
