3.The Effect of Sensory Stimulation on Mother-Infant Interaction in Premature Infants.

PURPOSE: This study was designed to investigate effect of sensory stimulation on the mother-infant interaction in premature infants. METHOD: The subjects of this study consisted of 36 pairs of premature infants and their mothers from NICU of one university hospital located in Taegu, 18 pairs for intervention group and 18 pairs for control group. The data were collected from May, 1999 to October, 2000. For the intervention group Field's sensory stimulation(tactile and kinesthetic stimulation) was applied 2 times a day for 10 days(10:00-11:00 in the morning and 7:00-8:00 in the afternoon by researcher and mother). To determine mother and infant interaction during feeding, tool developed by Kim Mi-Ye(1999) was used. Collected data were analyzed with SAS program using chi-square test and t-test. RESULT: Significant differences were found in mother-infant interaction between two groups(t=-5.38, p=.00). It indicates that sensory stimulation was effective in improving mother-infant interaction. In the aspects of the quality of mother-infant interaction, sensory stimulation was most effective in improving sensitivity to mother and infant's synchronic behaviors(t=-5.43. p=.00) and followed by growth fostering(t=-5.07, p=.00), sensitivity to infant's cues(t=-4.53, p=.00), clarity of infant's cues(t=-3.03, p=.00) and responsiveness to the mother's behaviors(t=-2.14, p= 0.04). CONCLUSION: Based on the result of this study, it is suggested that maternally administered sensory stimulation should be applied clinical practice to improve interaction of premature infants and their mothers.

METHOD: Data were collected from December 1, 2001 to June 30, 2003. A total of 35 mothers and their infants were assigned to a control(n=17) and an experimental(n=18) group. Mothers in the experimental group received education related to sensory stimulation program and administered to their infants twice a day for 6 months. Both groups were measured the weight, length, head circumference and chest circumference of infants at 6 weeks, 10 weeks, 14 weeks, 18 weeks, and 22 weeks and the mother-infant feeding interaction at 6 weeks, 10 weeks through the home visiting. RESULT: Compared to the control group, the experimental group had significantly larger increases in head circumference for intervention period. In addition to, the experimental group showed significantly higher score in mother-infant interaction than control group. CONCLUSION: These data suggested that sensory stimulation program administered by primipara may improve the physical growth of full term infant and mother-infant feeding interaction.

7.Imaging Findings of Scrotal Liposarcoma: A Case Report

Liposarcoma located in the scrotum is a very rare, and to our knowledge, only a few cases have been described in the radiologic literature. Clinically, scrotal liposarcoma manifests as a painless, slow-growing mass, which can be misdiagnosed as inguinal hernia, scrotal hydrocele or lipoma. Here, we present a case of scrotal liposarcoma. On CT and MRI, it manifested as a predominant fat-containing mass with heterogeneously enhancing soft tissue.
8.Effects of Benincasa hispida Seeds Intake on Blood Glucose and Lipid Levels in Streptozotocin Induced Diabetic Rats.

This study was designed to examine the effects of diets containing different levels of seeds of Benincasa hispida (wax gourd) on plasma glucose, insulin levels and lipid profiles in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Sprague-Dawley rats were induced diabetes mellitus by STZ injection (45 mg/kg) into the tail vein and were divide into 4 groups: normal, STZ-control, two experimental groups. Normal and STZ-control groups were fed an AIN-93 diet and 2 experimental groups were fed a modified diet containing 2.5% and 5.0% of wax gourd seed powder for 4 weeks. The weight gain and feed efficiency ratio in 5.0% seed groups were higher than in STZ-control group. A significant lowering effects of plasma glucose levels were observed in the wax gourd seed 2.5% and 5.0 groups. The plasma insulin level did not differ after treatment with wax gourd seed in experimental rats. The intake of 2.5% wax gourd seed did not result in significant change in plasma cholesterol levels compared to diabetic control group. The intake of 2.5% wax gourd seeds had normalized the increased levels of plasma triglyceride and free fatty acids after 4 weeks. In 5% wax gourd seed group, cholesterol, triglyceride and free fatty acid levels were elevated compared to 2.5% wax gourd seed group. The results of the present study indicate that 2.5% wax gourd seed group would be more effective to control the diabetes than 5% wax gourd seed group.

9.Correlation between Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer Thickness and Visual Field in Normal Tension Glaucoma.

PURPOSE: This study was performed to evaluate the validity of optical coherence tomography 3000 (OCT3) in the diagnosis of normal tension glaucoma (NTG). METHODS: One-hundred and eighty eyes with NTG or glaucomatous optic disc changes by direct ophthalmoscope and 51 normal eyes were included. Mean deviation (MD) and pattern standard deviation (PSD) were acquired by the Humphrey visual field analyzer. Mean retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness was measured by OCT3. We analyzed the relationships between MD and mean RNFL thickness, PSD, and mean RNFL thickness. We also analyzed differences in the change of mean RNFL thickness according to the change of visual field defect progression. RESULTS: MD and PSD were proportional to the mean RNFL thickness, using the Pearson correlation coefficient: 0.418 (p=0.001) and -0.397 (p=0.002), respectively. There was a significant decrease in the mean RNFL thickness according to the visual field defect severity. Particular, the RNFL thickness of the superior and inferior quadrants were significantly decreased in the severe visual field defect groups. The difference between the mean RNFL thicknesses in pre-perimetric glaucoma between the normal eye and early glaucoma groups was not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS: The mean RNFL thickness measured by OCT3 could be considered as valid parameter for the diagnosis of NTG. For early diagnosis of glaucoma, however, visual field test must be considered with OCT3.

10.Value of the Frontal Assessment Battery Tool for Assessing the Frontal Lobe Function in Stroke Patients

Objective:
To examine the correlation between the Frontal Assessment Battery (FAB) test, which is used to assess the frontal lobe function, and anatomical lesions as well as the ability of the test to detect frontal lobe dysfunction.
Methods:
Records of stroke patients undergoing a FAB test and Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) were retrospectively reviewed. The patients were divided into three groups according to the lesions determined by an imaging study: frontal lobe cortex lesions, frontal subcortical circuit lesions, and other lesions. The FAB scores of the three groups were compared using the Kruskal-Wallis test. The validity of the FAB test to detect frontal lobe dysfunction was assessed by a comparison with the Computerized Neuropsychological Function Test (CNT) using the Spearman correlation coefficient. The correlation coefficients between the FAB test and MMSE were analyzed further based on the MMSE cutoff score.
Results:
Patients with frontal cortex lesions had significantly lower total and subtest scores according to the FAB test than the other patients. The FAB test correlated better with the CNT than the MMSE, particularly in the executive function and memory domains. A high MMSE score (r=0.435) indicated a lower correlation with the FAB test score than a low MMSE score (r=0.714).
Conclusion
The FAB test could differentiate frontal lobe lesions from others in stroke patients and showed a good correlation with the CNT. Moreover, the FAB test can be used in patients with high MMSE scores to detect frontal lobe dysfunction and determine the treatment strategies for stroke patients.
