The most efficient method for reducing the organic content of dilute liquid waste is by aerobic-biological treatment. Basically, the organisms responsible for treatment possess the ability to decompose complex organic compounds and to use the energy so liberated for their bodily functions : reproduction, growth, locomotion and so on. That part of organic matter used to produce energy is converted to the essentially stable end pro ducts of carbon dioxide, water and ammonia, while the remainder is converted to new cells which can be settled and thus removed from the liquid before the waste is discharged to the receiving body water. Oxygen must be supplied continuous ly during the aerobic process. In the field of sewage treatment the Warburg respirometer is used mainly for the measurement of the oxygen uptake of samples. In this experiment the Warburg constant volume respirometer was used to determine the oxygen uptake by the bacteria in the presence of various glucose concentrations. The rate of oxygen uptake by the bacteria was expressed as the respiratoty quotient. The results indicated that the oxygen uptake was proportional to the glucose concentration. Familial Renign Chronic Femphigus(FRCP) is rare, persistent and vesicobullous genodermatoai. Three casee of FRCP with typical clinical and histapathological findings are reported. The first case of FBCP was 27-year-oId man who had recurrent episodes of grou vesicles and rust with miId pruritue at the posterior neck, in both axillae and in inguinal area for 10 years. The second case was 49-year-old woman with skin lesions of recurrent persistent. vesicles, pustules on the erythematous skin, crust and lichenification on the flexural area of extrimeties, axillae, ingumal and neck area for 10 yeara. The third case was 49-year-old male patient who had recurrent pruritic grouped vesicles with crust on the neck and axillary area. In all three patients, skin eruptions usually began and or aggravated in the spring or summer and tend to heal spontaneously in the autumn and winter and showed positive Nikolsky sign. The only one case of the reported three casea had familiaI history of skin lesions similar to FRCP. Histopat,holag;ic finding of biopsy specimens from the vesicular eruption showed auprabasal vesiculation with acantholysis, lacunae and villi formation in all 3 cases.

PURPOSE: This study aims to test the validity and criteria-related reliability of the Korean version of the Copenhagen Psyco-social Questionnaire version II (COPSOQ-K) assessing the psychosocial working environment. METHODS: The COPSOQ-K was developed through forward-backward translation techniques, and revision based on feedback from focus groups. Survey data were collected from 311 office workers who worked in one workplace. An internal consistency reliability was estimated by Cronbach's alpha. The impacts of the COPSOQ-K scales on job satisfaction, self-rated health, stress, sleeping troubles, burnout, and sickness absence were analyzed with multiple regression model or multiple logistic regression model, adjusted age and gender using SAS version 9.3. The Pearson correlation coefficients between the COPSOQ-K scales and Korean job stress and its subdomain were identified. RESULTS: Cronbach's alpha of COPSOQ-K scales was adequate or good (0.66~0.87). The major COPSOQ-K scales predict job satisfaction, self-rated health, stress, sleeping troubles burnout, and sickness absence. The major COPSOQ-K scales were correlated with Korean job stress and its subdomain. CONCLUSION: The COPSOQ-K scales have satisfactory reliability and criteria-related validity. The COPSOQ-K scales will be useful for the future studies and practices associated with psychosocial working environment.

To a patient suffering from intractable pain due to the terminal state of cervix cancer, 7% phenol-glycerine solution was injected through the L2-L3 interspace. We obtained a good result of pain relief, but motor paralysis developed.

This study examined the expression of the bcl-2 protein in 59 cases of transitional cell carcinomas (TCCs) of the bladder and evaluated the relationship of bcl-2 and p53 with apoptosis. The cases were divided into 41 low-grade TCCs, 18 high-grade TCCs, 32 superficial TCCs, and 27 invasive TCCs. p53 and bcl-2 protein were detected by the immunohistochemical method and apoptosis was analysed by using hematoxylin-eosin stained slide. The results were as follows: bcl-2 protein was detected in 8 (14%) TCCs and all of these cases were low grade TCCs. Expression of bcl-2 protein was not correlated with clinical stage. There was no correlation between bcl-2 and p53 protein. According to the immunohistochemical results of bcl-2 and p53 protein, the cases were divided 4 groups. Apoptotic index (AI) was higher in p53 positive/ bcl-2 negative group than other groups but the significance was recognized only between p53 positive/bcl-2 negative group and p53 negative/bcl-2 negative group (p<0.05). p53 protein was detected in 20 (36%) TCCs and its expression was correlated positively with histologic grade and clinical stage (p<0.05). AI correlated positively with histologic grade and clinical stage (p<0.01). These data indicate that overexpression of bcl-2 protein is rare in TCC of the bladder and associated with low grade TCCs. Overexpression of p53 is associated with the tumor progression in the TCCs. AI correlates with p53 positivity but does not correlate with bcl-2 positivity.

A 43 year-old Korean male has had multiple, grouped, asymptomatic, yellowish brown flat papules and nodules on the knees, elbows, buttocks, palms and soles for 3 years. Small yeIlowish, discrete papules first appeared on the right palm and left elbow, and gradually increased in size and number and spread to knees, buttocks and soIes. Physical examination revealed normal except for the skin lesions and no familial occurrence was noted. Gross finding of the serum was turbid, more or less creamy and paper electrophoresis revealed marked increase of prebetalipoprotein, increase of betalipoprotein and alphalipoprotein and absence of chylomicron, suggesting type III or type IV hyperlipoproteinemia. Serem choleterol was 200mg% and fasting blood sugar was 115.0mg%. with normal glucose tolerance test. Histopathology showed many aggregates of foam cells on H-E stain and many lipid droplets in the dermis on Sudan red stain. Based on the clinical and histopathological findings and lipoprotein analysis by the paper electrophoresis, the patient was diagnosed as type IV hyperlipoproteinemia with xanthoma tuberosum.

BACKGROUND: Candida species are one ol the major pathogens causing opportunistic infection. The need for a standardized. and clinically relevant method for antifungal susceptibility testing has become more increased because resistance to antifungal agents is now being reported with increasing frequency. The purposes of this study were to measure the minimal inhibitory concentrations actions amphotericin B, flucytosine and fluconazole of clinical isolates of Candida species, and to evaluate broth microdilution method as a more efficient test method, compared with NCCLS standard broth macrodilution. METHODS: The minlmal Inhibitory concentrations of C. parapsilosis ATCC 90018, C, albicans ATCC 90028 and 32 Candida isolates from Korea University Hospital were evaluated against amphotericin B, flucytosine and fluconazole by broth macrodilution and microdilution methods. RESULTS: The minimal inhibitory concentrations of Candida species ranged 0.25 to 1.0 microgram/mL for amphotericin B, 0.125 to 2.0 microgram/mL for flucytosine and 0.125 to 64 microgram/mL for fluconazole. The percent of agreement between NCCLS standard broth macrodilution and microdilution was highest when inoculum size was 0.5-2.5x103 CFU/mL and incubation time was 48 hours, and one fold dilution agreement was 100% for amphotericin B, 100% for flucytosine and 88-96% for fluconazole. CONCLUSIONS: This study showed good agreement of results of broth microdilution test with those of macrodilution, and suggested that broth microdilution method is an accessible and useful method and can be substituted for broth macrodilutlon method with the expectation of good results.
