1.EPMA analysis of bone formation around RBM surface implant.

PURPOSE: To evaluate bone formation on the implant surface between machined fixture and RBM surface fixture through analyzing of distribution and concentration of Ca and P by EPMA. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fixtures had divided in 2 group: Machined(Group I), RBM (Group II). Total 4 fixtures were implanted on rabbit which sacrificed on 2 week and 4 week for the histological specimens. By these specimens EPMA value were measured, compared and analysed by each group to figure out the evidence of clinical use of RBM implant. RESULT: After 2 weeks and 4 weeks , it was analyzed that bone formation area, distribution and concentration of Ca and P by EPMA. In distribution and concentration of P Group II was higher than Group I, but there were no statistical significances. In new bone formation area, Group II was more higher than Group I with statistically significances. Both of group, after 4 weeks area is little bit higher than after 2 weeks area but there is no statistically significances. CONCLUSION: RBM implant was better than machined implant on the early bone formation.

2.Neuroprotection of chloride channel blockers against NMDA-induced apoptosis of cultured rat hippocampal neurons.

Activation of N-methyl-d-aspartic acid (NMDA) receptor plays an important role in neuronal apoptosis induced by cerebral ischemia but the underlying mechanisms are still unclear. The present study examined the neuroprotection of three chloride blockers in an in vitro cell model of cerebral ischemia established by treatment of cultured rat hippocampal neurons with NMDA. Hoechst 33258 staining and MTT assay were used to detect neuronal apoptosis and cell viability, respectively. The neuroprotective effects of chloride channel blockers on the cell viability and neuronal apoptosis were only observed when the blockers were applied before NMDA exposure. In comparison with DIDS, SITS showed more potent protective effect in a dose-dependent manner, whereas NPPB showed no significant neuroprotective effect. The results demonstrate that pretreatment with both SITS and DIDS have protective effect against neuronal apoptosis, which is achieved by blocking both NMDA receptor and chloride channel.

3.Survey of Elementary School Students and Their Mothers Awareness and Intake Patterns of Kimchi in Changwon.

This study aimed to examine consumers' interest, preference, and consumption frequency of Kimchi in elementary school students in the fifth grade and their mothers living in Changwon city. In a comparison of eating habits, students exhibited better eating habits than their mothers (P<0.01). Though the mothers' levels, were higher than those of the students in the category of 'eat foods with a bit of salt usually', the students' levels were higher in the rest of the eating habit categories. The categories of 'like Kimchi', 'spicy taste', and 'appropriately spicy taste' got high levels. Among several kinds of Kimchi, both students and mothers preferred 'cabbage Kimchi' the most. Among various Kimchi foods, preferences for 'Kimchi pancake', 'fried rice with Kimchi', and 'tuna Kimchi soup', were highest in that order. The preferences differed between students and mothers in each category; mothers' preferences were significantly higher than those of students. However, in the rest of categories, except 'boiled kimchi and fish' and 'Kimchi and stir-fried spicy pork', students' preferences were higher than mothers' ones. Compared to their preferences, students' consumption frequencies were significantly higher than mothers' ones (P<0.01). There were positive correlations among students' eating habits, awareness of Kimchi, consumption frequency, and preference. For mothers, there were positive correlations not only between eating habits and awareness, but also between awareness and preference.

4.How Many Presentations Are Published as Full Papers?.

BACKGROUND: The publication rate of presentations at medical international meetings has ranged from 11% to 78% with an average of 45%. To date, there are no studies about the final rate of publications at scientific meetings associated with plastic surgery from Korea. The present authors investigated the publication rate among the presentations at meetings associated with plastic surgery. METHODS: The titles and authors of the abstracts from oral and poster presentations were collected from the program books of the Congress of the Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons (CKSPRS) for 2005 to 2007 (58th-63rd). All of the abstracts presented were searched for using PubMed, KoreaMed, KMbase, and Google Scholar. The titles, key words from the titles, and the authors' names were then entered in database programs. The parameters reviewed included the publication rate, type of presentation including running time, affiliation, subspecialty, time to publication, and publication journal. RESULTS: A total of 1,176 abstracts presented at the CKSPRS from 2005 to 2007 were evaluated. 38.7% of the abstracts, of which oral presentations accounted for 41.0% and poster presentations 34.8%, were published as full papers. The mean time to publication was 15.04 months. Among journals of publication, the Journal of the Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons was most used. CONCLUSIONS: Brilliant ideas and innovative approaches are being discussed at CKSPRS. The 38.7% publication rate found from this research appeared a bit lower than the average rate of medical meetings. If these valuable presentations are not available as full papers, the research would be a waste of time and effort.

5.Palatal root resection of compromised maxillary first molars.

PURPOSE: Root resection can be a valuable procedure when the tooth in question has a high strategic value. The prognosis of root resection has been well documented in previous studies, but the results focused on the palatal root resection have not been discussed in depth. I represent here the short term effectiveness of palatal root resection of maxillary first molars. METHODS: Palatal root resection was performed on maxillary first molars of three patients. All the palatal roots were floating state on the radiographic finding and showed full probing depth and purulent exudation at initial examination. Reduction of palatal cusp and occlusal table was performed concomitantly. Endodontic therapy was completed after root resection. RESULTS: Compromised maxillary first molars were treated successfully by palatal root resection in 3 cases. The mobility of resected tooth was decreased a little bit. The probing pocket depth of remaining buccal roots was not increased compared to initial depth. All the patients satisfied with comfort and cost effective results and the fact they could save their natural teeth. CONCLUSIONS: Within the above results, palatal root resection is an effective procedure treating compromised maxillary first molar showing advanced palatal bone loss to root apex with or without pulp involvement when proper case selection is performed.

6.Transconjunctival Lowering of the Lateral Lower Eyelid by Shortening of the Posterior Lamellae.

Commonly, the lateral canthus is located higher than medial canthus and many people are often shown short lateral palpebral fissure. This seemed to be shown as wild, anxious, and pierced eye. Many surgeons have made desperate efforts to improve this by anchoring lateral canthus to lower part of orbital bone. But, authors would like to show the two-third portion of the lateral lower eyelid by anchoring to capsulopalpebral fascia via transconjunctival approach. Authors performed this operation since 2009 and first named it by "Nun-Mit-Teuim" in Korean. Key of this operation is that anchoring of the lower tarsus and capsulopalpebral fascia via transconjunctival approach without resection of skin. It is not necessary to remove a redundant conjunctiva. Commonly, the lateral canthoplasty is performed simultaneously to descend a lower eyelid easily. After the operation, it can be observed that the lower eyelid lift up a little bit for 1~2 weeks and redundant conjunctiva will be constricted in several months. The operation is defined as anchoring the lower tarsus to capsulopalpebral fascia. The limit of the operation is it cannot change the position of the lateral canthus. Over-lowering the lower eyelid to increase palpebral fissure, results in scleral show and unfavorable line. Thus, it is important that surgeons should remind the purpose and limitation of this operation.

7.Preliminary Study on the Enhancement of Reconstruction Speed for Emission Computed Tomography Using Parallel Processing.

PURPOSE: Conventional image reconstruction uses simplified physical models of projection. However, real physics, for example 3D reconstruction, takes too long time to process all the data in clinic and is unable in a common reconstruction machine because of the large memory for complex physical models. We suggest the realistic distributed memory model of fast-reconstruction using parallel processing on personal computers to enable large-scale technologies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The preliminary tests for the possibility on virtual manchines and various performance test on commercial super computer, Tachyon were performed. Expectation maximization algorithm with common 2D projection and realistic 3D line of response were tested. Since the process time was getting slower (max 6 times) after a certain iteration, optimization for compiler was performed to maximize the efficiency of parallelization. RESULTS: Parallel processing of a program on multiple computers was available on Linux with MPICH and NFS. We verified that differences between parallel processed image and single processed image at the same iterations were under the significant digits of floating point number, about 6 bit. Double processors showed good efficiency (1.96 times) of parallel computing. Delay phenomenon was solved by vectorization method using SSE. CONCLUSION: Through the study, realistic parallel computing system in clinic was established to be able to reconstruct by plenty of memory using the realistic physical models which was impossible to simplify

8.An Unusual Case of Tonsillar Lymphangiomatous Polyp.

Tonsillar lymphangiomatous polyp is an uncommon hamartomatous lesion that generally arises from the tonsillar surface. Due to the uncommon clinical and pathological features of these polyps, pathologist and clinician may experience difficulty in correctly classifying them. Although this is a rare clinical and pathologic entity for pathologists and clinicians, the diagnosis is not so difficult if one has a bit of experience about that. Recently, we experienced a 37-year-old women with a pale lymphangiomatous polyp of 3x1.5 cm size, which was treated by tonsillectomy. We report this case with a review of literature.

The negative symptoms and cognitive symptoms of schizophrenia patients are still clinical problems to be solved. Schizophrenia patients are abnormal in oxidative stress, immune regulation, and anti-histone deacetylase (HDAC), while sulforaphane plays a role in anti-oxidative stress, anti-inflammation, and anti-HDAC. KG1a and KG1cells were treated by different concentrations of SFN for 48 h. Flow cytometry (FCM) was used to analyze the phase distribution of cell cycle. High-throughput sequencing was used to detect the effect of SFN on the expression of cell cycle related genes in KG1a cells. The mRNA expression of P53, P21, CDC2 and CyclinB1 were detected by qPCR.
