1.Conversation Analysis for Improving Nursing Communication.

PURPOSE: Nursing communication has become more important than ever before because quality of nursing services largely depends on the quality of communication in a very competitive health care environment. This article was to introduce ways to improve nursing communication using conversation analysis. METHODS: This was a review study on conversation analysis, critically examining previous studies in nursing communication and interpersonal relationships. RESULTS: This study provided theoretical backgrounds and basic assumptions of conversation analysis which was influenced by ethnomethodology, phenomenology, and sociolinguistic. In addition, the characteristics and analysis methods of conversation analysis were illustrated in detail. Lastly, how conversation analysis could help improve communication was shown, by examining researches using conversation analysis not only for ordinary conversations but also for extraordinary or difficult conversations such as conversations between patients with dementia and their professional nurses. CONCLUSION: Conversation analysis can help in improving nursing communication by providing various structures and patterns as well as prototypes of conversation, and by suggesting specific problems and problem-solving strategies in communication.

2.Correlations of Communication and Interpersonal Skills between Medical Students and Residents.

PURPOSE: Medical students' communication and interpersonal skills can be evaluated by standardized patients in a clinical performance examination (CPX). The purpose of this study is to investigate which communication and interpersonal skills are more closely correlated between medical students and residents. METHODS: This study included 2nd-year residents in 2009 who took the eight-station CPX as 4th-year medical students in 2006. In-patients who were cared for by the residents were asked the seven items related to interpersonal and communication skills. The correlation between the scores of these seven items in the 2006 CPX and the scores in the 2009 patient survey was evaluated. RESULTS: Twenty-six residents, 11 in medical wards and 15 in surgical wards, participated in the study. The medical students' total scores tended to be correlated with the residents' scores (r=0.381, p=0.055). There was significant correlation between the scores for students and residents for 'Explaining more explicably' (r=0.470, p=0.015), and marginally significant correlation (r=0.385, p=0.052) for 'Listening attentively.' There was no significant correlation for the other five items. CONCLUSION: 'Explaining more explicably' and 'Listening attentively', these skills were more closely correlated between medical students and residents. These basic communication skills should be included in graduate or licensing evaluations.

3.The Development and Effects of a Comprehensive Communication Course for Nursing Students.

PURPOSE: The purposes of this study were to: (a) develop a comprehensive communication course combined with a group program for improving communication skills; and (b) examine the effects of the comprehensive communication course on interpersonal communication, relationship change, self-esteem, and depression in nursing students. METHOD: The experimental group consisted of 82 nursing students, and the control group, 108 nursing students. Both groups each took communication courses from March to June, 2002 and 2003. A group program for improving communication skills was conducted for each 8 subgroups of the experimental group for 90 minutes once a week during the 6 weeks, while the existing communication lecture was conducted for the control group. Both groups were post-tested after the intervention for verifying the difference of variables between the two groups, and the experimental group was also pre-tested for verifying the difference between before and after the treatment. RESULT & CONCLUSION: Interpersonal communication score of the post-test in the experimental group was significantly higher than in the control group and the depression score of the post-test in the experimental group was significantly lower than in the control group. Interpersonal communication, relationship change and self-esteem scores were significantly increased and the depression score was significantly decreased in experimental group after the treatment. In conclusion, the comprehensive communication course that was developed in this study had positive effects on communication skills in nursing students.

4.Relationships of Nurse-Nurse Collaboration and Nurse-Physician Collaboration with the Occurrence of Medical Errors

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to examine degrees of nurse-nurse collaboration and nurse-physician collaboration, and investigate their relationships to the occurrence of medical errors. METHODS: A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted with 264 nurses in a university hospital. The questionnaire included fivecomponent nurse-nurse collaboration and three-component nurse-physician collaboration scales. Data were analyzed using independent t-tests, ANOVA, χ2 tests, and multiple logistic regression. RESULTS: Mean score for nurse-nurse collaboration was 2.8 out of 4.0, and for nurse-physician collaboration, 3.4 out of 5.0. There were significant differences in the nurse-nurse and nurse-physician collaboration scores by nurses' preference to workplace and work unit. A significant difference was found in the nurse-nurse collaboration scores by job position. Fifty-seven (21.60%) nurses responded that they had experienced a medical error in the last six months. Logistic regression analysis revealed that nurse-physician collaboration was a significant factor associated with nurses' error experience. Nurses with higher scores for the nurse-physician relationship component were less likely to experience medical errors. CONCLUSION: Findings from this study show that nurse-nurse and nurse-physician collaboration were moderate. Negative relationship between nurse-physician collaboration and the occurrence of medical error indicates that enhancing nurse-physician collaboration would contribute to improving patient safety.

6.Mediating Effects of Interpersonal Problems in the Relationship between Social Network Service Use Tendency and Depression among University Students

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study isto identify the mediating effects of interpersonal problems in the relationship between Social Network Service (SNS) use tendency and depression among university students. METHODS: Data were collected from April 28 to May 7, 2018 and the participants included 222 university students, who responded to the question regarding SNS use tendency, interpersonal problems and depression. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple regression using the SPSS/WIN 23.0 program. RESULTS: A positive correlation is found between depression and SNS use tendency (r=.24, p<.001), and among interpersonal problems (r=.62, p<.001), SNS use tendency and interpersonal problems (r=.34, p<.001). Interpersonal problems have a full mediating effect on the relationship between SNS use tendency and depression (Sobel test: 5.24, p<.001). CONCLUSION: These results suggest that it is important to manage interpersonal problems to prevent depression caused by SNS use tendency.

7.Experiences of Interpersonal Relationships among Head Nurses in General Hospital Settings.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to understand the experiences of interpersonal relationships of head nurses in interacting with others in general hospital settings. METHODS: The data were collected by individual in-depth interviews from seven head nurses and were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. RESULTS: Five major categories emerged and they represent a major strategy according to five different groups of interacting people. 'Establishing trust' was identified as the key strategy in dealing with patients and family members. 'Embracing with sisterly love' and 'helping with self-defense' were major strategies for subordinate nurses and physicians, respectively. 'Respecting and recognizing' was the main approach for other professionals such as dietitians and 'emphasizing rules and educating' were a major one for non-professionals. Head nurses paid more attention and made efforts in dealing with their subordinate nurses than with other groups of people, because they felt the most difficulty in their relationship with subordinate nurses. CONCLUSION: The results of the study showed that head nurses employ unique strategies in interacting with different groups of people to increase the efficiency of communication. This study would help nurse administrators establish an effective program for improving interpersonal relationships of head nurse.

8.A Concept Analysis of Assertiveness.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to analyze and clarify the meaning of the concept, assertiveness. METHOD: This study used Walker and Avant's process of concept analysis. RESULTS: 1. Attributes of assertiveness were defined as 1) Self-esteem 2) Comprehension to others 3) Clarification of the subject 4) Verbal communication 5) Non-verbal communication 2. The antecedents of assertiveness consist of these facts 1) The occurrence of a conflict situation 2) The occurrence of will to stick to one's opinions 3. There are consequences occuring as a result of assertiveness 1) Positive self-confidence 2) Increased comprehension or consideration to others 3) Expand of mutual respect 4) Maintenance of continuously cooperative relationship with each other 5) Output of acceptable results to each other. CONCLUSION: Assertiveness is a core human behavior and is key to interpersonal relationships. Using the components of the concept of assertiveness, many conflicts in a nursing situation can be effectively prevented.

9.Effects of a Stress-Management Program on Stress Coping Methods, Interpersonal Relations, and Quality of Life in Patients with Chronic Mental Illness.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a stress-management program on stress coping methods, interpersonal relations and quality of life in patients with chronic mental illness. METHODS: A nonequivalent control group pre-posttest design was used for this quasi-experimental study. The study was conducted from May 1 to December 30, 2010. The 41 participants in this study were selected from patients with chronic mental illness (20 for the experimental group and 21 for the control group). Datas were analyzed chi2-test, t-test, paired t-test, and one-way ANCOVA with the SPSS/WIN 15.0 program. RESULTS: There were significant changes in stress coping methods scores, interpersonal relations scores and quality of life scores in the experimental group before and after treatment, which were significantly different from those in the control group. CONCLUSION: The results of the study indicate that the stress-management program resulted in significant improvement in stress coping methods, interpersonal relations and quality of life for patients with chronic mental illness. Therefore, this study shows stress-management programs are useful in clinical practice as effective nursing interventions in patients with chronic mental illness.

10.Effects of Satisfaction with Social Support on Complicated Grief in Bereaved Dementia Caregivers.

BACKGROUND: While complicated grief can lead to adverse health outcomes, social support has been shown to be an important protective factor of its negative effects. The present study investigated the relationship between social support including satisfaction with support, received support, and negative interactions and complicated grief in the transitional context from caregiving to bereavement. METHODS: Bereaved caregivers (n=221) who participated in a multi-site study of dementia caregiving were assessed for complicated grief. Social support measured before and after death were used to examine the longitudinal associations among social support and complicated grief. RESULTS: We found that caregivers reporting greater increase in satisfaction with social support were likely to experience lower levels of complicated grief, while the amount of received social support did not significantly impact complicated grief. Negative social interaction was significantly associated with the level of complicated grief after the death of the care recipient. CONCLUSIONS: The relationship between social support and complicated grief suggests that satisfaction with social support may be associated with lower levels of complicated grief. Study findings point to the importance of the type of social support for reducing the level of complicated grief.
