2.FASMA: a service to format and analyze sequences in multiple alignments.

Multiple sequence alignments are successfully applied in many studies for under- standing the structural and functional relations among single nucleic acids and protein sequences as well as whole families. Because of the rapid growth of sequence databases, multiple sequence alignments can often be very large and difficult to visualize and analyze. We offer a new service aimed to visualize and analyze the multiple alignments obtained with different external algorithms, with new features useful for the comparison of the aligned sequences as well as for the creation of a final image of the alignment. The service is named FASMA and is available at http://bioinformatica.isa.cnr.it/FASMA/.

3.Study on the occupational distribution of discoverers and reporters of public health emergency events reported through Internet-based surveillance system.

OBJECTIVETo describe the occupational distribution of staff who worked on detection and reporting on public health emergency events, and to explore the effective strategies for identification and reporting on emergency events.
METHODSWe conducted a retrospective survey on 3275 emergent events reported through Public Health Emergency Events Surveillance System from 2005 to the first half of 2006. Data were collected by uniform self-administrated questionnaires by county Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, including information on events detection and reporting, etc.
RESULTSAmong event discoverers, 56.40% (1847/3275) were healthcare staff, 20.58% (674/3275) were teachers, and 15.15% (496/3275) were staff from the disease control systems. Among those event reporters, 56.82% (1861/3275) were healthcare staff, 21.77% (713/3275) from disease control system and 10.75% (352/ 3275) were teachers.
CONCLUSIONHealthcare staff and teachers played the most important role in detection and reporting on events. It would be favorable to improve the ability of events detection and reporting if we could enhance the training program to the relative staff in medical facilities and school settings especially at the grass root level.

4.Canonical Correlation between Organizational Culture and Informatics Competency.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the canonical correlation between organizational culture and nurses' informatics competency. METHOD: Participants in this study were 354 nurses from three hospitals and one university. The scales of organizational culture, informatics competency for nurses were used. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficient, canonical correlation were used for data analysis. RESULTS: The dominant organizational culture was hierarch-oriented culture. Nursing informatics competency of the participants was relatively low with a mean score 3.04. Organizational culture was related to informatics competency with 2 significant canonical variables. The first variate showed the higher four subcategories of organizational culture showed the better nursing informatics. The second variate indicated that nurses felt higher innovation-related and lower hierarch-related culture showed higher medical informatics-related software usage and computer related information management, lower perception of informatics and information search using internet. CONCLUSION: Organization culture has a major of impact on the success of information system use. Therefore, the continuous strategy for higher innovation-related organizational culture such as management support should be needed.

5.Effect of Korean High School Students' Mental Health on Academic Achievement and School Dropout Rate.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to explore the influence of high school students' mental health on their academic achievement and school dropout rate by using longitudinal data. METHODS: For this study, 153 high schools were randomly sampled on a nationwide scale. The descriptive data was collected from a school information internet site which is organized by the Korean Ministry of Education. We used the schools' mean scores on the Adolescent Mental Health Problem-Behavior Questionnaire-II (AMPQ-II) scale which was used for estimating students' mental health in the 2013 school-based mental health screening test. The data analysis was conducted by using hierarchical regression analysis. RESULTS: The results of this study showed that the AMPQ-II scale's mean scores have significant effects on the following year's academic achievement and annual dropout rates. Especially, the AMPQ-II scale's mean scores tend to increase the school dropout rate in vocational schools. CONCLUSION: The finding of this study is that Korean high school students' mental health states significantly influence their academic achievement and school dropout rate.

6.Psychological and Social Factors Affecting Internet Searches on Suicide in Korea: A Big Data Analysis of Google Search Trends.

PURPOSE: The average mortality rate for death by suicide among OECD countries is 12.8 per 100000, and 33.5 for Korea. The present study analyzed big data extracted from Google to identify factors related to searches on suicide in Korea. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Google search trends for the search words of suicide, stress, exercise, and drinking were obtained for 2004-2010. Analyzing data by month, the relationship between the actual number of suicides and search words per year was examined using multi-level models. RESULTS: Both suicide rates and Google searches on suicide in Korea increased since 2007. An unconditional slope model indicated stress and suicide-related searches were positively related. A conditional model showed that factors associated with suicide by year directly affected suicide-related searches. The interaction between stress-related searches and the actual number of suicides was significant. CONCLUSION: A positive relationship between stress- and suicide-related searches further confirmed that stress affects suicide. Taken together and viewed in context of the big data analysis, our results point to the need for a tailored prevention program. Real-time big data can be of use in indicating increases in suicidality when search words such as stress and suicide generate greater numbers of hits on portals and social network sites.

7.Evaluating Learners' Behaviors in a Web-based Instructional Program.

PURPOSE: Web-based instructional programs have been criticized that it is not easy to grasp learners' learning behaviors. This study applied the web-based instructional program with log data analysis plans to a group of participants, and (1) explored variables of learners' learning behaviors, and (2) compared the level of learners' understanding about the topic before and after the program completion. METHODS: A total of 44 nursing students in their third year of one university participated in this descriptive study with one group pre-test and post-test design. RESULTS: The variables were actually produced, and reflected how participants completed the program. Participants' knowledge about the topic improved after the program completion. However, when the participants were divided into two groups depending on their learning behaviors, participants with honest learning behaviors performed better. CONCLUSION: This study confirmed that it was possible to grasp learners' learning activities by analyzing log data, and suggested that answering multiple choice items through internet may not be enough to determine the effects of an instructional program usage. More studies are in need to select appropriate indicators that could reflect learners' learning behaviors effectively and efficiently.
