1.Analysis and Study in Testing of Infrared Therapy Equipment.

This article summarizes the common problems in registration and supervision testing of infrared therapy equipment, combines YY 0306-2008 Particular requirements for the safety of heat radiation therapy equipment, GB 9706.1-2007 Medical electrical equipment-Part 1:General requirements for safety, Registration technical review guidelines for infrared treatment equipment, etc. This paper analyzes and discusses the following aspects, including classification and applicable standards, performance indicators and overtemperature protection. Some suggestions and solutions are given to provide some guidance for medical equipment manufacturers in design, research and development and registration, in order to avoid the problem effectively and improve the passing rate of testing.

2.Investigation on Mobile Phone Based Thermal Imaging System and Its Preliminary Application.

The technical structure of a low-cost thermal imaging system (TIM) lunched on a mobile phone was investigated, which consists of a thermal infrared module and mobile phone and application software. The designing strategies and technical factors toward realizing various TIM array performances are interpreted, including sensor cost and Noise Equivalent Temperature Difference (NETD). In the software algorithm, a mechanism for scene-change detection was implemented to optimize the efficiency of non-uniformity correction (NUC). The performance experiments and analysis indicate that the NETD of the system can be smaller than 150 mK when the integration time is larger than 16 frames. Furthermore, a practical application for human temperature monitoring during physical exercise is proposed and interpreted. The measurement results support the feasibility and facility of the system in the medical application.

3.Application of infrared thermography in dentistry.

This study discusses the effects of infrared thermography in dentistry. Infrared thermography allows the quantification of infrared rays and provides useful data for dental care and research. It has been used for the diagnosis of temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD) and proposed as an objective measure of myofascial pain. It is closely related to temperature and produces beneficial objective data. A study of the heat emissions from facial structures has the potential to benefit dental diagnosis of TMD, postoperative inferior alveolar damage, and endodontic and conservative treatments. In this paper, we assessed infrared thermography in dentistry and consider future developments of infrared thermography.

4.Investigation of pathway and mechanism of heat stimulating action of sandwiched moxibustion.

Based on the literature review and theories of biophysical theory, the pathway and mechanism of the heat of sandwiched moxibustion stimulating acupoints are analyzed. It is concluded that the heat of sandwiched moxibustion is transferred to the skin of acupoints by heat conduction and thermal radiation. The heat conduct from the skin to deep tissues and other parts was carried out through the biological heat conduction systems. The investigation combined with theories of biological heat conduction was benefit to the research on clinical mechanisms of indirect moxibustion. In addition to heat effect, the infrared resonance of indirect moxibustion and acupoints may be the base of clinical effects of indirect moxibustion.

6.Research progress of infrared light promoting wound healing.

At present, current stimulation, ultra-sound, and light therapy have become effective methods to promote wound healing. Among them, infrared light is the most widely used method and is one of the important methods to promote wound healing. The therapeutic effect of infrared light on wounds is related to the effect of photobiomodulation on cells and molecules on the skin surface, but the mechanism by which photobiomodulation of infrared light promotes wound healing has not been fully elucidated. Therefore, it is necessary to study the action characteristics and the mechanism of photo-biomodulation of infrared light in promoting wound healing. This article reviews the effect of different types of infrared light on wound healing and the mechanism of infrared light in promoting wound healing.

7.Research on infrared radiation characteristics of skin covering two acupuncture points in the hand and forearm, NeiGuan and LaoGong points.

In order to research the infrared radiation characteristics of the skin covering Traditional Chinese acupuncture points, which are NeiGuan in the forearm and LaoGong in the center of the palm, we detected continuously the infrared radiation spectra of the human body surface by using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy. The experimental results showed that firstly, the differences of the infrared radiation spectra of the human body surface were obvious between individuals. Secondly, the infrared radiation intensity of the human body surface changed with time changing. The infrared radiation intensity in two special wavelength ranges (wavelengths from 6. 79 microm to 6. 85 microm and from 13. 6 microm to 14. 0 microm) changed much more than that in other ranges obviously. Thirdly, the proportions of the infrared radiation spectra changed, which were calculated from the spectra of two different aupuncture points, were same in these two special wavelength ranges, but their magnitude changes were different. These results suggested that the infrared radiation of acupuncture points have the same biological basis, and the mechanism of the infrared radiation in these two special wavelength ranges is different from other tissue heat radiation.

8.The Influence of Infrared Radiation on Ultraviolet Induced Skin Injury.

The health-promoting qualities of ultraviolet light have been well recognized, but it also induces deleterious effects from sunburn to skin cancer, Since our enviroment exposes us to both ultraviolet and infrared rays at the same time, the latter is considered to influence to some extent the cutaneous effects of the former. In recent years, it has become increasingly apparent that the biologic effects of one type of radiation may be modified by wavelengths of different energies. Interactions of this kind are complex and occasionally result in true synergy or antagonism. Although there are several reports on these interactions, the results are not in accordance. This study was undertaken to investigate the influence of infrared radiation (IR) on ultraviolet radiation (UVR)-induced skin injury, especially minimal erythema dose (MED). Thirty-five healthy medical students participated in this study between May and June, 1983. One side of the back was exposed to IR with UVR while as a control the other side was exposed only to VVR. The results were summarized as follows : 1. In one experiment treated with IR before UVR, the mean MED-S.D. of the treated site was 17 7+5 3 (sec) and that of the control site was 18. 3-+6. 4 (sec)- The increase of the MED was statistically significant. (p<0. 01], paired t-test) Among the fifteen subjects, the MED was increased in 73% (11/15), and the same in 27% (4/15).

9.Objective assessment of facial paralysis using local binary pattern in infrared thermography.

Facial paralysis is a frequently-occurring disease, which causes the loss of the voluntary muscles on one side of the face due to the damages the facial nerve and results in an inability to close the eye and leads to dropping of the angle of the mouth. There have been few objective methods to quantitatively diagnose it and assess this disease for clinically treating the patients so far. The skin temperature distribution of a healthy human body exhibits a contralateral symmetry. Facial paralysis usually causes an alteration of the temperature distribution of body with the disease. This paper presents the use of the histogram distance of bilateral local binary pattern (LBP) in the facial infrared thermography to measure the asymmetry degree of facial temperature distribution for objective assessing the severity of facial paralysis. Using this new method, we performed a controlled trial to assess the facial nerve function of the healthy subjects and the patients with Bell's palsy respectively. The results showed that the mean sensitivity and specificity of this method are 0.86 and 0.89 respectively. The correlation coefficient between the asymmetry degree of facial temperature distribution and the severity of facial paralysis is an average of 0.657. Therefore, the histogram distance of local binary pattern in the facial infrared thermography is an efficient clinical indicator with respect to the diagnosis and assessment of facial paralysis.

10.Optimization approach to inverse problems in near-infrared optical tomography.

In this paper, we introduce an optimization approach to the inverse model of near-infrared optical tomography (NIR OT), which can reconstruct the optical properties, namely the absorption and scattering coefficients of thick tissue such as brain and breast tissues. A modeling and simulation tool, named Femlab and based on finite element methods, has been tested wherein the forward models are based on the diffusion equation. Then the inverse model is soved; this is regarded as an optimization approach, including the tests on difference between the measured data and the predicted data, and the optimization methods of optical properties. The algorithms used for optimization are multi-species Genetic Algorithms based on multi-encoding. At last, the whole strategy for the Femlab and optimization approach is given. The strategy is proved to be sufficient by the simulation results.
