This is a retrospective study of 95 peripheral bone tuberculous patients seen at the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Seoul National University Hospital for 18 years from Jan. 1959 to Dec. 1977. The most common site of the tuberculosis in this series was greater trochanter (28.9%). The ratio of males to females involved was1.3: 1and the highest age incidence was 1st. decade (27.4%). The patients who visited our hospital within one year from the onset was 46(48.4%). The erythrocyte sedimentation rate was definitely increased in 49.5%. The radiological features of peripheral bone tuberculosis were erosion of the bone, some degree of rarefaction of the adjacent bone, destructive changes, sequestration and mild reactive new bone formatian, but differentiation from pyogenic osteomyelitis and some bone tumors could not be easily done. There were 31 cases of associated tuberculous lesions (32.7%) and among them, pulmonary tuber-culosis were 16 cases (16.8%). Various methods of treatment have been carried out with good results but overall recurrence rate was 29. 6%.

Since the independent reports of Charcot and Marie and of Tooth, in 1886, interest in this familial disease has centered largely in the genetic and diagnostic aspects, and yet references in the literature to Surgical management are rare and inexact. Our experience with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease in 4 patients operated at Seoul National University Hospital during the last 3 years is reported. Of 6 cases of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease which have been studied, 4 patients have undergone surgery for the correction or amelioration of the crippling foot deformity. The authors' operation has consisted of triple arthrodesis, medial release, lengthening of the Achilles tendon, tendon transfer which was available and present evidence that properly designed surgical treatment can correct, prevent, or materially reduce disability of the deformed feet. Of the 4 cases reported here, all have either been reviewed or the patients have been interviewed in the last year. On the basis of adequate follow-up observations, thesurgical procedure outlined have been shown to improve the crippled condition. In spite of progressive musele wasting, the operative treatment could prevent or ameliorate the deformity. Three cases of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease were evaluated in a long-term follow-up after having undergone surgery to correct their foot deformity. Excellent results were achieved from three of them which were maintained at final follow-up, and one is being gollowed up.

An unstable knee presents a real challenge to the orthopaedic surgern in view of the treatment. However, currently, as more and more of our citizens participate in the recreational activities that expose the always vulnerable knee joint to undue stress, and victims who are injured by traffic accident are increased. Orthopaedic surgeons are seeing more and more people who have knee instability severe enough to prevent them from participating in sports, in labor, and in the many other activities which may stress their knees. 95 patients suffering from ligamentous injuries of the knee have been treated by operation at Inje Medical College Paik Hospital from June 1, 1979 to February 28, 1983. 57 of the 95 patients with a minimum follow up of 6 months returned for evaluation. 1. Through the follow up study, we can obtain following results. 25 of 29 cases (86.2%), operated upon within 2 weeks of the time of injury, were good or fair(+), and 7 of 20 cases (35.0%), operated upon between 2 weeks and 3 months of the time of injury, were good or fair (−). 2. The most significant fact is that the result of 16 of 18 cases(88.9%), operated upon the anterior cruciate ligament, were good and excellent or fair(+), and 8 cases, operated upon posterior cruciate ligament, were all good and excellent or fair(+). 3. Cruciate ligament reconstruction using central one-third of the patellar ligament is more effective procedure for achieving static and functional stability of the knee than any others.

The meniscus has improtant functions of shock absorption, load transmission, lubrication and significant contribution to stability of the knee. Accordingly, repair rather than excision can be expectd to be satisfactory and functional teatment for knee joint. We had Repaired 56 cases of meniscal tears from March, 1987 to September of 1992, among which 42 cases were followed up for at least 12 months to 60 months at most(in average 36 months). The results were as follows; 1) In medial meniscal tears, 26 cases were acute, while five were chronic. As for the lateral meniscus, acute and chronic teats were observed in nine and two cases, respectively. 2) Eleven of the 35 acute tears were associated with anterior cruciate ligament tears, while three of seven chronic tears were associated with anterior cruciate ligament tears. 3) Second-look arthroscopic examinations were performed on nine repaired cases. Retears occurred in two cases and seven cases revealed healing at repair sites. 4) Two cases(5%) out of 42 repaired menisci were return during follow-up. One was a case of isolated meniscal tear and the other was associated with rupture of anterior cruciate ligament. 5) Two return cases were repaired in the chronic stage of more than one year after trauma. 6) The standing radiographs which were taken in full extension and 45 flexion on eight out of 13 patients, who had been followed up for more than 4 years showed intact joint space without narrowing.

Forty-nine children between the ages of 2 and 10 years, treated conservatively for fomoral shaft fracture, were studied clinically and radiographically to access the complications and related factors. They had an average follow-up of 48.8months(range, 12 to 77months). 35 percent of the patients had significant associated injuries. Leg length discrepancies of 10mm to 20mm are observed in 5 cases(10%) of the patients. The average overlap of bone ends at union was 6.5mm. The average growth acceleration was 8.8mm regardless of sex, age, upper limb dominance, fracture site or shape, but was promoted by overriding of the fracture ends at union, There were 16 cases(32%) of excessive angular deformity of 10° to 25° after union. However all deformities were remodelled enough to give normal alignment of the joint surface. The growth plate played on important role in the remodelling process.

80 cases of Cysticercosis were studied and analysed, which were diagnoses by biopsy at Seoul National University in the past three years from January-1978 to March-1980. The results were summerized as follows. 1. The relative incidence ratio of cysticercosis among 18,941 surgical specimens was 0.42%. 2. The age group between 11 and 50 years old occupied 87.5%. 3. Of the 80 cases, there were 38 males and 42 female patients, without significant sex predominence. 4. The common sites of cysticercosis were upper extremities (35.0%) and anterior surface of the trunk (37.5%) 5. Epidemiologically, there was marked predominence of rural area over urban area. 6. There were 8 cases (10%) of definite cerebral cysticercosis and 4 cases (5%) of suspicious cerebral cysticercosis. 7. In the cases of nodular masses of extremities, the parasitic infection, especiaily cysticercosis celluiosae, must be included in differential diagnosis distinguished from other soft tissue tumors.
