The acetabular angles were measured in 2 groups of selected 100 infants and children each, of whom one group aged 14 months and younger and the other group aged 15 months of 5 yrs. and who were proved to be normal by all the physical examination and whose acetabular angles were below 40 according to Coleman's diagnostic criteria. The measurements were broken down into right and left, and male and female because of the known difference in the incidence of CDH in 2 members of each of these paired categories and analysed statistically. The following statistic significances resulted: l. All the measured normal acetabular angles vary between 10 and 31 degrees. 2. The acetabular angles decrease after weight bearing by the statistical significant difference between 0-14 mo. group and 15 mo-5yr. group. The angles are 22,61±3,47 (M±S,D) and 18.68±3.64 (M±S.D) respectively. 3. The acetabular angles of female of 15mo.-5yr. group are higher than male by the statistical significant difference. The angles are 17.77±3.54 (M±S.D) and 20.18±3.29 (M±S.D) respectively. 4. Statistical significant differences were absent between right and left.

Growth under conditions of iron-restriction and the production of siderophore was examined in Vibrio mimicus ATCC 33653. This strain grew and multiplied in the presence of the high-affinity iron chelators ethylenediamine-di (o-hydroxyphenylacetic acid). Chrorne azurol S (CAS) agar and solution were used to detect the production of siderophore under these condition. Siderophore could be detected in the iron-rcstricted culture supernatants. The siderophore was extracted from iron-restricted culture supernatants by phenol-chloroform-ether method and purified by Dowex ion-exchange and Sephadex G-25 gel filtracton chromatography. The purified siderophore was confirmed by paper chromatography and HPLC. The Purified siderophore enhanced the growth of V. mimicus when the bacterium was grown in iron limited medium. Injection of both the siderohore and the bacteria to mice resulted in more rapid death than that of the only bacteria. However, the siderophore did not show lethality to mice and any toxicity to cell line like HeLa and U937.

Pulmonary endometriosis is a rare disease which is characterized by hemoptysis during menstruation (catamenial hemoptysis). We report a case of pulmonary endometriosis in a 33-year-old housewife. She has had regular menses with moderate flow and minimal dysmenorrhea. She had undergone curettage in May 1995 for artificial abortion. In July 1995, she experienced the first episode of hemoptysis. A chest CT scan revealed a 2.0 1.0 cm sized ill-defined soft tissue density in the periphery of anterior segment of the left upper lobe with a surrounding irregular ground-glass opacity. A left upper lobectomy was done under the diagnosis of pulmonary endometriosis. Cut section of the resected lung showed a round red-brownish solid lesion, measuring 2.0x1.0cm in cross. Microscopically a focus of the endometrial tissue, which was composed of endometrial glands and stroma, was found in the lung parenchyme and many hemosiderin laden macrophages were seen in the surrounding alveoli. The postoperative course was favorable with no further episodes of hemoptysis.

In 20 patients with psoriasis, 27 early psoriatic lesions of 1-2mm size (16 papules with scale and 11 maculopapules without scale) and 15 clinically uninvolved skin at distance of 2-4em from the nearest psoriatic lesion were histologically examined in an attempt to obtain information on the mechanism which initiates the development of the skin changes. PURPOSE: This study performed to identify the association between various nutritional indices including biochemical, anthropometric variables and mortality in Korean elderly. METHODS: Among a total of 151,000 subjects over 40 years of living in Jung-up district, 1051 was selected using a random cluster sample method. Between Dec 1996 and Feb 1997, they underwent the blood tests and anthropometric measurements. Three years later, on Dec 2000, we investigated the mortality of the 340 subjects that had been over 65 years at the enroll time. RESULTS: Of the 1051 subjects(M:F=410:641), 340 were over 65 years at the enroll time, 34(10%) had died by 3 years follow up. After adjustment of age and sex, decreased Hb, Hct, serum protein, albumin, increased serum creatinine were significantly associated with an increased risk of mortality(p<0.05) among the variables. Especially serum albumin remained strong predictors of mortality after cont rolling for other significant variables(RR=0.15, 95% CI=0.03-0.63, p=0.01). CONCLUSION: We confirmed the strong independent association with serum albumin and mortality in the rural community dwelling ambulatory elderly Koreans.
