4.Effect of Combination Therapy of Acebutolol with Hydrochlrothiazide(Sectrazide(R)) on the Serum Lipids of Patients with Essential Hypertension.
Korean Circulation Journal 1984;14(2):377-383
Serial changes of serum lipids were observed in 28 patients with essential hypertension, administered combination regimen of acebutolo 400mg and hydrochlorothiazide 25mf for up to 24 weeks. The results were as follows. 1) Serum total cholesterol and triglyceride level were varied within -6-5 and -2-7% change respectively which were not significant clinically. 2) High density lipoprotein-cholesterol decreased 5% at 6 weeks, 16% and 17% decrease in 12 and 24 weeks respecitively. The changes were more remarkable in the hyperlipidemic patients. 3) Pretreatment average blood pressure of 174/104mmHg lowered to 144/88 at 6 weeks and normalized to 135/86 at 12 weeks. 4) No adverse reaction were observed except mild weakness and indigestion which did not force the discontinuation of drugs. In summary, the fixed-ratio combination of acebutolol and hydrochlorothiazide was excellent in antihypertensive efficacy and patient's compliance, although decrease in high density lipoprotein-cholesterol demand the physician alert to exert vigilance especially in young hypertensives and hyperlipidemic patient to check serum lipids before and during medication, and to change regimen if metabolic derangement is detected in the view point of primary prevention of coronary heart disease.

5.Effects of Nitric Oxide Produced from Bovine Alveolar Macrophages on the Growth of Pasteurella haemolytica A1.
Journal of the Korean Society for Microbiology 1997;32(6):693-700
Nitric Oxide (NO) is an important mediator in various pathological conditions. The list of agents known to activate the NO pathway continues to expand and now includes bacterial products, cytokines, cAMP-elevating agents, trauma, and ozone. The activation of the L-arginine-dependent NO pathway via NO synthase is an important mechanism to stimulate both antimicrobial capability and cytotoxicity of phagocytes. NO has both beneficial and detrimental effects on host responses including lung injury. The effects of NO on the host were intensively investigated in lung injury, bovine pneumonic pasteurellosis (51). However, there was no description about the effect on the primary agent of the disease, Pasteurella haemolytica Al. Therefore, we investigated the effect of NO produced from bovine alveolar macrophages on the growth of Pasteurella haemolytica Al which is the primary agent of bovine pneumonic pasteurellosis. With the exogenous source of NO, sodium nitroprusside (SNP), the growth of the bacterium was dose-dependently inhibited by NO produced from SNP when measured by XTT colorimetric assay and standard plate count method. Also, same effect was observed in AM-derived NO. The effect was bacteriostatic rather than bactericidal.

6.A Case of Heterophyid Trematode Infection with Intestinal Obstruction.
Korean Journal of Pathology 1994;28(1):65-67
This report describes a case of ileal obstruction in a 31-year-old male with acute abdominal pain. A plain film of the abdomen showed segmental obstruction of small intestine. The patient underwent laparoscopic resection of the segment. Microscopic examination demonstrated foci of ulceration, submucosal edema, transmural inflammation, mural and neural hyperplasia and noncaseating granulomas, mimicking Crohn's disease. However, there were microabscesses predominantly composed of eosinophils. Furthermore, a section of an adult heterophyid trematode was identified in the crypt. Heterophydiasis usually causes diffuse enteritis. Therefore, this case with intestinal obstruction seems to be a rare manifestation of intestinal heterophydiasis.

7.Low-grade Immature Teratoma of the Ovary with Gliomatosis Peritonei: A case report.
Korean Journal of Pathology 1994;28(3):322-324
Immature teratoma accounts for less than I percent of all ovarian teratomas and occurs commonly in young individuals, the peak incidence being in the second decade. It contains a variable mixture of mature and immature tissues in which neuroectodermal elements almost always predominate. Gliomatosis peritonei, miliary implants of mature glial tissues on the peritoneum or omentum, is an infrequently reported complication of mature or immature ovarian teratomas. We describe the first case in Korea of a 12-year-old girl with an immature teratoma and numerous glial peritoneal implants.

Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 1965;6(2):33-35
Zonulolytic effects of alpha-chymotrypsin and trypsin were examined on rabbits' eyes using an apparatus which enables one to press the enucleated eyeballs. The time interval between the applications of enzymes and the protrusion of the lens was measured. The results showed that the trypsin was 4 to 5 times more effective than alpha-chymotrypsin.
