The patient, a girl of 19 years in good health, had a class I malocclusion. The maxillary left centra1 incisors and both lateral incisors had already erupted. But the space for the right central incisor was partially closed by the mesial drifting of the neighboring teeth. The caused a shift in the midline and a cross-bite relation on the incisors. X-ray examination revealed the presence of the right central incisor in the alveolar bone and odontoma just above the crown of the right central incisor. After enough space for the impacted incisor was created in the dental arch with a open-coil spring the rectangular incision was made. Removing the odontoma uncovered the flat surface of the labial aspect of the incisor. During the tooth had erupted of its own accord, any unnecessary force had been imposed on the tooth. When it was decided that the tooth should be brought out by the mechanical device, the gold cast onlay with hook was used and run a light elastic between this hook and the main arch wire. Finally the tooth was brought down to the arch level. The result was excellent. Fortunately the esthetic problem and any detrimental effects on the psychological make-up could be avoided.

5.Modulation of Eosinophilia and Cytokines of Bronchoalveolar Larvage Fluid(BALF) by CpG Oligodeoxynucleotides(ODN) in a Mouse Model of Established Airway Inflammation.
Pediatric Allergy and Respiratory Disease 2002;12(2):93-104
PURPOSE: Asthma is an inflammatory disease of the airways that is induced by Th2 cytokines and inhibited by Th1 cytokines. Oligodeoxynucleotides containing a CpG motif(CpG ODN), as potent inducers of Th1 immunity, are considered promising candidates for immune modulation in asthma. In this study we wanted to investigate the effect of CpG ODN on eosinophilia and cytokines of BALF in a mouse model established airway inflammation and the optimal route(systemic vs mucosal) of CpG ODN. We examined the difference of immunologic responses between CpG ODN and corticosteroids. METHODS: Female BALB/c mice, induced pulmonary allergic inflammation, were treated intranasally or intraperitoneally with CpG ODN and Dexamethasone. Allergen-specific antibody responses, cytokines(IL-4, IL-5, IL-12), and eosinophilic inflammation of the airways were investigated on BALF and splenocyte. RESULTS: CpG ODN effectively induced IL-12 and inhibited IL-4 and IL-5 as well as eosinophilic inflammation when CpG ODN was administered intranasally or intraperitoneally with allergen challenge. Therapy with corticosteroides, while effective inhibiting IL-5 generation, did not induced IL-12 in BALF. CONCLUSION: Systemic or mucosal administration of CpG ODN effectively stimulated the production of Th1 cytokines and suppressed eosinophilic airway inflammation in contrast of corticosteroids and control ODN. Thus, CpG ODN vaccination is a potentially useful approach for immunomodulation of established airway inflammation in a mouse model of asthma.

7.Excimer laser photorefractive keratectomy for astigmatism.

Korean Journal of Ophthalmology 1993;7(1):20-24
The effectiveness of excimer laser photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) for astigmatism was evaluated. We treated 136 eyes of naturally occurring myopic astigmatism using the 193-nm excimer laser with an expanding slit and an iris diaphragm, and followed for a minimum of 6 months. At 6 months after operation, the mean refractive cylinder decreased from 1.62 +/- 0.88 D preoperatively to 0.48 +/- 0.48 D. For detailed analysis of the results, the surgically induced refractive change (SIRC) was determined from the preoperative and postoperative refractions by vector analysis of astigmatism. When we compared the cylinder of the SIRC with the preoperative refractive cylinder, the effect of the cylindrical ablation was 93.9 +/- 36.7% at 6 months. The axial error of the cylinder of the SIRC to the preoperative cylindrical axis was 5.9 +/- 10.2 degrees at 6 months. These results suggest that excimer laser PRK with an expanding slit appears to have a significant effect for the correction of astigmatism.
