On epidemiological grounds, Anopheles sinensis has been suspected for many years to be the malaria vector in Korea. Of 7,517 dissections of A. sinensis, one specimen was found for the first time in Korea naturally infected with sporozoites in August 1962. Experimental infection of A. sinensis with Plasmodium vivax had been successfully conducted at earlier date.

4.Screening of Phytase Overproducing Strains in Aspergillus spp. by UV Mutagenesis.

Mycobiology 2000;28(3):119-122
Phytases (myo-inositol hexakisphosphate phosphohydrolase; EC 3.1.3.8) are enzymes which catalyze the hydrolisys of phytate into myo-inositol and inorganic phosphates. Phytases are found in plants and a variety of microorganisms. Aspergillus species were treated with 254 nm of UV irradiation for the screening of phytase overproducing mutant strains. At 15 minute irradiation, the survivals of population were less than 5%, and UV irradiation time was decided at 20 minute for the isolation of mutant strains. Four UV mutant strains in A. oryzae (YUV-47, -169, -341, -511) and six in A. ficuum (FUV-17, -36, -69, -193, -317, -419) were isolated on PSM media containing ammonium phosphate. The specific enzyme activities of A. ficuum mutants are 110 to 140% higher than that of wild type.

Korean Journal of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy 1994;14(1):74-81
Eosinophilic gastroenteritis is characterized by peripheral eosinophilia, eosinophilic infiltration of the bowel and gastrointestinal symptoms. The disease may affect any area of the gastrointestinal tract. Various manifestations are present, corresponding to the predominant layer of the eosinophilic infiltration. We experienced a case of eosinophilic gastroenteritis presenting as protein-losing enteropathy in a 36-year old male patient with acute upper abdominal pain and watery diarrhea. He showed peripheral eosinophilia, hypoalbuminemia, penile., thigh and ankle edema. The patient was treated with oral corticosteroid, and supportive care such as parenteral albumin, fluid and electrolytes. Almost all symptoms resloved within 1 week. The present report concerns a case of eosinophilic gastroenteritis associated with protein loss. Cases, of eosinophilic gastroenteritis with protein-losing enteropathy are not common. To our knowledge, no case has reported in Korea. So we report this case with brief review of the literature.

A 53-year-old woman developed a psinful erythematous papular skin eruption around the biting site by a tick on the left lower abdomen. A excision biopsy specimen from the skin lesion showed perivsscular infiltration of inflammatory cells composed mainly of neutrophiles, lymphocytes, and a few eosinophiles and histiocytes throughout the dermis. Some of the vessels were dilated with protruding and proliferated endothelial cells. The tick was identified as an adult female of Ixodes nipponensis by the scanning electron microscopic examination.

The pubic louse, Pthirus pubis is a blood-sucking ectoparasite adapted to hold onto pubic, axillary and body hairs. It is usually confined to the pubic and inguinal region. However, it may also rarely involve the scalp and eyelashes. We report two cases of phthiriasis occurring on unusual sites, the first case occurring on the scalp of a 5 month-old male infant, and the second case on the eyelashes of a 49-year-old fe-male.

10.Management and perspectives of patient safety in healthcare.
Journal of the Korean Medical Association 2013;56(6):454-458
Patient safety has been one of the hottest issues of healthcare quality in Korea since two years ago. Patient safety is defined as avoiding risk and minimizing harm. It is a new concept to transform all services to add value in healthcare, not only to address the effectiveness of treatment but also errors, inefficiency, preventable complications, and unnecessary treatment. To reduce risk and improve the effectiveness of health care quality, health care organizations should operate a patient safety reporting system and learning program. For the purpose of promoting improvements in health care quality and patient safety of hospitals, patient safety standards in an accreditation system were implemented by the Korea Institute for Healthcare Accreditation. Lessons from an error reporting system provide important solutions to management of sentinel events in health care organizations. The current status of policies, strategies, and reporting systems for patient safety were reviewed and in addition, a few suggestions have been added to advance patient safety in Korea.
