6.The Effect of Homologous Epididymal Extracts on Spermatogenesis in Mouse.
Korean Journal of Urology 1982;23(8):1171-1174
A number of tissues have been studied in the past with respect to their organ-specific antigens. In many instances it has been possible to produce autoantibodies against characteristic components. The testis, epididymis, and seminal plasma have been largely explored from this angle. Interest in the field of accessory glands began many years ago, when the first cross-reactions between extracts of prostate, seminal vesicles and seminal plasma were demonstrated. As a consequence, the possibility that some seminal plasma antigens might be present in the accessory glands before being secreted into the genital tract opened up a new approach to possible autoimmunologic damage of these glands and of seminal spermatozoa as well. The purpose of this study is made to observe the effect of homologous epididymal extracts on the spermatogenesis in mouse. Isoimmunization with extracts of mouse epididymis, administered with complete Freund`s adjuvant, has been performed in this study. The results were as follows: 1. The histological observations revealed that spermatogenesis was adversely affected by the immunization with homologous epididymal extract added with an equal amount of complete Freund's adjuvant for 6 weeks. It was observed that spermatogenesis was remarkably impaired in the experimental group whereas it was unaffected in the control group of male mouse. The results further indicated that the degeneration and exfoliation were found in the germinal cell of seminiferous tubules and in the epithelium of the epididymal ducts besides intercanalicular infiltration of m0nonuclear round cells. 2. The cross-reactions between extracts of epididymis and testicular tissues were demonstrated in mouse. 3. The immunological examination such as immune diffusion test and sperm agglutination test showed negative reaction on all of the experimental animals in this study. Therefore. the immunological change in this experiments seems to be caused by cell mediated immunity.

7.A Histopathological Observation on 48 cases of Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy.
Korean Journal of Urology 1982;23(8):1127-1131
The histopathological observation was made on 48 cases of benign prostatic hypertrophy which had been admitted to the Department of Urology, Chung-Ang University Hospital from January, 1971 to December, 1981. The results were as follows: 1. Histopathologically the fibromyoadenomatous type was 22 cases (45.8%) and the fibroadenomatous type 17 cases (35.4%), the fibromuscular type 9 cases (16.7%), muscular type 1 case (2.1%). There was no special difference between each histopathological type in age distribution. 2. Mean size of removed prostatic tissue was 81.1cm3 in fibroadenomatous type, 71.8cm3 in fibromyoadenomatous type, 25.0cm3 in muscular type, 20.0cm3 in fibromuscular type. The type of which weight was more than 50 gm was fibromyoadenomatous type. 3. Additional lesion such as inflammation, infarction or cancer was notedin I6 cases (31.9%). Inflammatory Change were present in 4 cases of fibromyoadenomatous hyperplasia and in 3 cases of fibroadenomatous hyperplasia. Infarction was seen in 2 cases of fibromyoadenomatous hyperplasia and in 1 case of fibromuscular hyperplasia. Latent cancer was found in 2 cases of fibromyoadenomatous hyperplasia and in 2 cases of fibroadenomatous hyperplasia. Inflammatory changes and latent cancer were present only in adenomatous hyperplasia and infarction in fibromuscular hyperplasia.

8.The Effects of UVB radiation on the immunologic function of mouse peritoneal macrophages.

Korean Journal of Dermatology 1993;31(1):28-37
Ultraviolet radiation of skin leads to a systemic alteratior tkat inhibits the normal pattern of immunologic tumor rejection., suppresses the contact hypersemisivity and transiently alters the morphology and the surface marker characteristics of Langerhans cells. Moreover, Ultraviolet radiation elaborates the ETAF, neuropeptides, proteins, and urocaicacid which may alter immunologic responses. But no other study about the effects of UVB irradiation on the systemic immunologic functions of the macrophages of internal organs was reported. The macrophages of the reticuloendothelial system (RES) play a central role in cell-mediated immunity, because they are involved both in the initiation of responses as antigen-presenting, cells, and in the effector phase as inflammatory, tumoricidal and microbicidal cells. The present study was intended to investigate the effects of UVB irradiation on the immunologic functions of mouse peritoneal macrophages. Normal 6-8-week-old BALB/c mice were exposed at the dose rate of 20mJ/cm and 40mJ/cm of UVB per day, 5 days per weeks for 2 weeks, 4 weeks and 8 weeks. Then the peritoneal macrophages were obtained from the mice and the changes of cell count, chemotactic index, phagocytic index, NBT reduction rate and superoxide (0) production were examined. The results were as follows : 1)the number of mouse peritoneal macrophages was decreased by UVB radiation, 2) the chemotactic index of mouse peritoneal macrophage was not altered by UVB radiation, 3) phagocytic activity of mouse pertoneal macrophage was significsntly decreased by UBV radiation, 4) NBT reduction rate in mouse aeritoneal macrophage after UVB radiation was sinificanily decreased in all experimental group, and 5) Superoxide (0) production in mouse peritoneal macrophage after UVB radiation was decreased in all experimental groups.

The Journal of the Korean Orthopaedic Association 1976;11(1):62-69
Forty one cases of patella fractures which were treated at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Catholic Medical College during the period from January 1971 to March 1974 were presented. Most fractures encountered in man of 3rd and 4th decades, sixty percent of fracture was in the mid-pole of patella and thirty percent in the lower pole. Twenty nine(29%) fracture was induced by direct blow and remainders by indirect violence. When the knee joint was immobilized in 15 flexion with crlinder cast in certain period of time, early joint mobility was restored after the discontinuence of the cast. The tibial tubercle-plasty in association with fracture reduction to increase quadriceps power and to prevent late occureace of patellofemoral arthritis gave satisfactory result in two cases.

10.Treatment of Bowleg: Clinical observation of 18 cases

The Journal of the Korean Orthopaedic Association 1976;11(3):353-362
Nowadays the clinical impression in Korea is that genu varum uncommon though there was high incidence of this deformity by vitamin D deficiency in the early 1900. Authors reviewed the case histories and x-ray of 18 patients treated for this condition at the Dept. of Orthopaedics, St. Mary's hospital for past 5 years: 17 patients were under 5 years of age. 12 patients had rachitic bowIeg and among them four had active ricket. Six patients had physiologic bowleg deformity. Classification in four grades according to severity of bowleg is attempted. Among the cases eleven patients having less than 10 degree of bowleg treated conservatively with good end result, but corrective osteotomy is routinely scheduled for seven patients having bowleg of knee over 10 degree and resist to treatment. Lasting it is stressed that physiologic bowleg shoud be distinguished from pathologic one. Diagnosis of bow leg can not be made before age of 2–3 years, that is, before transitional phase of development of knee angle.
