1.The Ultrastructural Study of Intermediate Filaments in Epithelial and Mesenchymal Tumors.

The immunohistochemical results are compared with ultrastructural features of neoplastic epithelial cells and mesenchymal cells to assess whether immunohistochemistry is useful in the differential diagnosis of epithelial tumors and mesenchymal tumors. Squamous cell carcinoma and transitional cell carcinoma exhibited positive reaction for keratin, but adenocarcinoma was weakly positive reaction for keratin. Ultrastructurally, heavy bundles of tonofilaments were more frequently encountered in squamous cell carcinoma. In adenocarcinomas, the intermediate filaments were arranged randomly as nonaggregated, short filaments spread throughout the cytoplasm. Fibroblastic and fibrohistiocytic tumors, schwannomas, and neurofibromas exhibited positive reaction for vimentin and alpha-smooth muscle actin. Vimentin consisted of large aggregates of gently curved filaments that often displace other cytoplasmic constituents was noted. Fibroblastic cells with features of smooth muscle differentiation were found in granulation tissue of healing wounds, hypertrophic scars, fibromatosis, fibroma, neurofibroma and malignant fibrous histiocytoma. Smooth muscle tumors showed abundant bundles of thin filaments with dense bodies, pinocytotic vesicles and dense attachment plaques along the cell membrane. Skeletal muscle tumors showed bundles of disorganized thick and thin filaments, remnants of sarcomeres and Z-bands. From the above result, ultrastructural and immunohistochemical studies on epithelial and mesenchymal tumors were useful in tumor diagnosis sand classification.

3.Expression of c-erbB-2, c-myc, c-fos, bcl-2, p53, PCNA, and TGF-alpha in Transitional Cell Carcinoma of the Urinary Bladder.

Most of malignant tumors in the urinary bladder is transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) deriving from the urothelium. Clinical stage and histopathologic grading of the TCC of the urinary bladder is important in the determination of the patient's prognosis. To investigate the correlation between the prognostic factors and the expression of the various oncoproteins and growth factors in each grade of the TCC, immunohistochemical stains for c-erbB2, c-myc, c-fos, bcl-2, p53, proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), and transforming growth factor-alpha (TGF-alpha) were performed in the formalin fixed paraffin embedded tissues of the TCC (Grade I; 15 cases, Grade II; 20 cases, Grade III; 15 cases) of the urinary bladder. The immunoexpression rate of c-erbB2 was immunoexpression 78.0% in the grade I, 85.0% in the grade II, and 95.0% in the grade III TCC. The immunoexpression rate of c-myc, c-fos and bcl-2 was below 5% in each grades of TCC. The p53 immunoexpression was identified in 11.5%, 24.3% and 30.6% of the grade I, II, and III TCC, respectively. The PCNA and TGF-alpha expression was 53.0% and 27.6% in the grade I, 77.3% and 32.7% in the grade II, and 78.2% and 37.3% in the grade III TCC, respectively. These results suggest that the expressions of c-myc, c-fos, bcl-2, and TGF-alpha are similar in each grade of the TCC and the positivity of c-erbB2, p53, and PCNA shows an increasing tendency for the higher grade TCC of the urinary bladder. Therefore, c-erbB2, p53, and PCNA are clinically useful predictors of the patient's prognosis.

4.Three cases of pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy.

We roport herein three cases of pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy in two primigravidas and one multigravida in erythematous papules and urticarial plaques on both thighs, buttock and upper extremites. In the second case, lesions initially developed on both thighs and then preaded on abdomen, back and exter ities. Abdomen, thighs and extremites were involved in the third case. Histopathologic findings revealed acanthosis orfocal spongiosis in epidermis and lymphocytic perivascular infiltration with or without eosinophilsn dermis. They were treated with systemiror topical steroids and, mtihistamines. Itching was relieved within a few days after therapy and skin lesions resolved spontaneously after delivery.

6.A Case of Leukemia Cutis in Erythroleukemia.

A 13 years old girl came to our department with complaints of multiple ulcerating and non-ulcerating nodules on her back and buttocks since 1 month prior to visit. Skin biopsy specimen showed diffuse monomorphous infiltration of leukemic cells in the dermis and subcutis. Bone marrow biopsy specimen showed changes of erythroleukemia. Treatment was initiated with combined chemotherapy which was a combination of cytosine arabinoside, adriamyein and 6 thioguanine. When combined chemotherapy was finished, she was in complete remission state and the nodules cured after 1 month of combined chemotherapy.

7.A Case of Cutaneous Cartilaginous Tumor.

8.Fleas of small mammals from the endemic haemorrhagic fever zones of Kyonggi and Kangwon Provinces of the Repubic of Korea.

From nine species of small mammals collected during the 12 month study period, nine species of fleas were recovered. Of the fleas, Ctenophthamus congeneroides congeneroides were obtained from seven host species, were recovered every month but January, comprised greater than 60% of the freas recovered each month except Noverber, December and January, accounted for more than 60% of all fleas and were collected from 15 of 17 localities visited. During November, December and January more than 50% of all fleas recovered were Stenoponia sidimi. Too, the greatest variety of flea species were recovered during November and December. Among the hosts, all nine flea species were recovered from Apodemus agrarius, six species were obtained from Microtus fortis and four from both Eothenomys regulus and Crocidura laciura. The highest rates of infested individuals, highest to lowest E. regulus, M.fortis, C.lasiura and A. agrarius. The highest general and specific indices were found in M.agrarius occurred in April and May and the highest monthly specific indices were noted for January, April and May. Ctenophthalmus congeneroides was the most abundant flea, had the widest host range, seasonal occurrence and the widest habitat distribution of the flea collected during this study. These fleas exhibited a decline in abundance in midwinter and an increase in numbers in the early spring. Among the small mammals, Apodemus agrairus yielded the greatest number of fleas species and was most heavily infested with during April and May.

9.A Study of Effect of Diabetic Sera on in Vitro Growth of Candida albicans.

It has been well known that human sera exert an inhibitory effect on the growth of dermatophytes and candida. Several different inhibitory serum factors have been isolated and investigated by some workers. In clinical aspects, the patients with diabetes are prone to derrnatophyte and candida infections. The authors attempted to investigate whether diabetic sera would have any difference in inhibitory effect on in vitro candidial growth compared with norma1 sera, Fifty and 30 serum samples were obtained from patients with diabetes and bealtby adults respectively, Aliquots of candida albicans were mcubated in the test tubes containing nutrient kiroth with addition of eacb serum. Iron was also added to saturate transferrin in the serum. The degree of candidial growth was determined by the change of percent transmission on spectrophotometry of the candida-inoculated nutrient broth in the test tubes during 24-hour incubation. The results were as followings: 1. The sera from both patients with diabetes and healthy adults were found to retain the inhibitory effect on in vitro candidial growth, though the transferrin, a known serum inhibitor, was removed by saturation with iron. 2. The inhibitory effect of diabetic sera was weaker than that of normal sera. 3. The degree of the inhibitory effect of each diabetic serum was not correlated with corresponding serum glucose level.
