Clinical Pediatric Hematology-Oncology 2023;30(2):85-90
Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency in children and adolescents. Pediatric collagenous gastritis (CG) is a rare gastrointestinal disorder. Abdominal pain associated with iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a common clinical symptom. We present three cases of pediatric CG diagnosed during the treatment of recurrent IDA. During esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), nodularity of the gastric corpus was observed, which is a characteristic finding in pediatric patients with CG.Although pediatric CG could not be diagnosed by general EGD biopsy and pathological examination, it was diagnosed after suspecting pediatric CG and performing appropriate diagnostic tests. We recommend EGD for pediatric patients with recurrent IDA, especially for those with gastrointestinal symptoms. Moreover, when performing EGD, conducting appropriate examinations for pediatric CG is necessary.

The pulmonary cytology has reached a high level of accuracy. By the examination of the sputum and/or bronchial brushings, it is now possible to make a diagnosis in 70% to 90% of patients with cancer. Primary melanoma of the lung is very rare and there have been reported about 20 cases in the world literature. We present a case of primary malignant melanoma of the lung in a 61-year-old male diagnosed by cytologic examination of sputum, bronchial brushing and aspirated pleural fluid. Histologic examination of bronchoscopic biopsy and examination of the skin and other primary sites confirmed the diagnosis.

Mobility shifts in non-denatured gel electrophoresis of PCR-amplified Rif' region in each of fifteen different mutants of M. tuberculosis were discerned by single strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) analysis. The findings of mobility differences between rifampin-resistant and susceptible strains showed an excellent agreement with data obtained by traditional susceptibility test. SSCP-PCR seemed to replace the cultivation method of susceptibility test that was known to be time-consuming, labor wasting, and skeptical in quality control. After screening of rpoB gene mutation by SSCP-PCR, detection of specific sequence changes in the region of rpoB gene was attempted through the procedures of PCR-amplification, cloning of PCR-products using pGEM-T vector and DNA thermocycling sequencing. Fifteen different types of mutations were identified among fifty strains of rifampin-resistant strains while five rifampin-susceptible control strains showed no sequence changes of rpoB gene as well as reference strain H37rv. Most mutation appeared to be a point mutation due to substitution or deletion except seven mutants showing somewhat complex mutation. Each of mut#ated loci inclined to clustering within a region of eighteen amino acids involving eight codons. The most common mutation of Ser425 shared among twenty-nine mutants and followed by eleven mutants of His420. Several mutants alleles identified in this study appeared to be dissimilar to those of previous reports.

Biological behavior of malignant tumors has been assessed by morphological grading, clinical staging, and estimating other tumor markers. Recently DNA ploidy measured by flow cytometry and image analyser has been suggested as an additional useful indicator of the tumor behavior. In order to extract useful tumor cell-specific information in ovarian mucinous tumors, DNA contents and other morphologic parameters were measured by image analysis and DNA ploidy was also measured by flow cytometry. In all cases of cystadenoma, DNA diploidies were observed. In borderline malignancy, DNA diploidies were chiefly observed except one case of polyploidy. In true malignancy, DNA aneuploidies were observed except one case of polyploidy and two cases of diploidies by image analysis, and except four cases of diploides and one cas of polyploidy by flow cytometry. The statistical significance were observed in DNA ploidy pattern by image analysis. In nuclear areas, perimeters and major axis, statistical significance were not observed. These results suggest that DNA ploidy pattern are more or less independent parameter as an additional useful indicator of the histological grade of malignancy and that image analysis are better than flow cytometry in detecting DNA aneuploidy.
