5.Imaging Gene Expression.

The rapid progress of molecular genetic methods over the past two decades has necessitated the development of methods to detect and quantify genetic activity within living bodies. Reporter genes provide a rapid and convenient tool to monitor gene expression by yielding a readily measurable phenotype upon expression when introduced into a biological system. Conventional reporter systems, however, are limited in their usefulness for in vivo experiments or human gene therapy because of its invasive nature which requires cell damage before assays can be performed. This offers an unique opportunity for nuclear imaging techniques to develope a novel method for imaging both the location and amount of gene expression noninvasively. Current developments to achieve this goal rely on utilizing either reporter enzymes that accumulate radiolabeled substrates or reporter receptors that bind specific radioligands. This overview includes a brief introduction to the background for such research, a summary of publis hed results, and an outlook for future directions.

6.A Statistcal Observation on Deaths occurred in the First Army Group during the Year of 1996.

This is a statistical observation based on data of deaths occurred in the first army group(1A) of Republic of Korea Army (ROKA) and data brought to Wonju Army Hospital for medicolegal autopsy by all of Military Police Corps (MPC) in 1A during the year of 1996. The report aims to reveal facts on various causes of death of military members in attempt to analyse 70 cases statistically and differences between military members and civillians. The following are the summary of results ; 1. The total numbers of death in 1A were 70 cases and autopsy rate was 17.1%(12 cases). All cases were males. 2. The violent deaths were 60 cases(85.7%) and the natural deaths were 10 cases(14.3%). 3. The percentage of deaths of soldiers was 81.4%(the most), sergeants was 8.6%, officers was 5.7%, others was 4.3%. The group of the private (25.7%) and the private first class (25.7%) was the leading group of death by the rank. 4. For deaths due to injuries, the percentage of deaths due to gunshut injury was 51.2%, traffic accident was 30.1%, explosion of bomb was 7.0%, fall was 7.0% and blunt injury was 4.7%. 6. For the natural deaths, 10 cases were recorded and death due to neoplasm was taking the most of the total percentage with 40%. 7. For the violent deaths, the percentage of accidental death was 42.4%, suicide was 40.7% and homicide was 16.9%. These results suggest that suicide by firearm and traffic accident including military owned vehicle could be the major cause of death in army, and intensive management for group of the private and the private first class could be important to reduce the number of death.

7.The Effectiveness of Two Manual Slim Bristles Toothbrushes among Fixed Orthodontic Appliance Patients

This research aimed to evaluate the oral hygiene status in fixed orthodontic appliance patients when using two different slim bristles toothbrushes and to assess patients’ toothbrush perception. Twenty six fixed orthodontic appliance patients participated in the six weeks prospective, crossover clinical trial. All patients used two different slim bristles toothbrushes (Toothbrush A and Toothbrush B) for two weeks each with a washout period in between. Gingival health and plaque value were assessed based on Lӧe & Silness Gingival Index and Silness & Lӧe Plaque Index at baseline, week 2, week 4 (washout) and week 6. At the end of the trial, patients’ toothbrush perception was assessed through questionnaire. All data were analysed using SPSS version 22. The mean age of the patients was 21.5 ± 4.3 years, with female predominant (n= 17, 65.4%). More than half were Malay (n= 15, 57.7%) and had tertiary education (n=14, 53.8%). Patients could achieve good oral hygiene when using Toothbrush A (65.4%) and Toothbrush B (69.2%). However, the occurrence of gingivitis was significantly higher when using Toothbrush A (OR=1.889, 95% CI=1.207-2.957, p value < 0.05). Toothbrush B was felt to clean better (n= 14, 53.8%) while Toothbrush A was perceived to be easier to use (n=14, 53.8%). Both toothbrushes maintained patients’ oral hygiene status. However, when using Toothbrush B, oral health status was better as it significantly reduced gingivitis occurrence compared to Toothbrush A. As for the toothbrush perception, most patients preferred Toothbrush A to be taken home.
9.Activation domain in P67phox regulates the steady state reduction of FAD in gp91phox.

An activation domain in p67(phox) (residues 199-210) is critical for regulating NADPH oxidase activity in cell-free system [10] To determine the steady state reduction of FAD, thioacetamide-FAD was reconstituted in gp91(phox), and the fluorescence of its oxidised form was monitored. Omission of p67(phox) decreased the steady state reduction of the FAD from 28% to 4%, but omission of p47(phox) had little effect. A series of the truncated forms of p67(phox) were expressed in E.coli to determine the domain in p67(phox) which is essential for regulating the steady state of FAD reduction. The minimal length of p67(phox) for for regulating the steady state of FAD reduction is shown to be 1-210 using a series of truncation mutants which indicates that the region 199-210 is also important for regulating electron flow within flavocytochrome b(558). The deletion of this domain not only decreased the superoxide generation but also decreased the steady state of FAD reduction. Therefore, the activation domain on p67(phox) regulates the reductive half-reaction for FAD, consistent with a dominant effect on hydride/electron transfer from NADPH to FAD.

During the period of 25 years from Apr. 1959 to Jan. 1984, 58 patients of non-tuberculous infec-tion of the spine (53 pyogenic osteomyelitis and 5 iatrogenic and primary discitis) were admitted and treated at our department. Clinical analysis was carried out following results were obtained. 1. The incidence was higher in the 3rd and 4th decade and the sex ratio between male and female was 2.1:1 2. The relative frequency of the commonly involved sity were lumbar(60), thoracic(17.), cervical(9%), lumbosacral(7%), thoracolumbar(3.5%), cervicothoracic(1.5%), in that orders. 3. The morbidity period less than 1 month was only in 22% and that less than 1 year was only 4. The frequent clinical symptoms and signs were back pain(91), tenderness(88%), muscle spasm (76%), and fever and chillness(41%). 5. The causative microorganism was identified in 43 cases among which 77% was coagulase positive staphylococcus. 6. Expected spontaneous bony fusion was not found in any case of 9 follow-up cases of conservatively treated group, while excellent bony union was noticed in all 16 follow-up cases of anterior fusion group except one. 7. Anterior spinal fusion seems be to indicated in those cases such as with failure of conservative treatment, paraplegia, concomitant mechanical instability, long duration of sinus tract and even with dubious bacteriological diagnosis. 8. Anterior spinal fusion for pyogenic osteomyelitis and discitis has the advantages, that is eradication of diseased foci with easier bacteriological diagnosis, cord decpmpression, increase of bony stability, and promotion of bony union. 9. Laminectomy was indicated in those cases with epidural abscess. 10. Bone scan and computed tomography were useful in the early diagnosis and evaluation of treatment results.
