1.Computed tomographic staging of renal cell carcinoma

It is generally agreed that CT is a good staging method of renal cell carcinoma. However, CT has its ownpitfalls. Herein we reviewed 31 patients with renal cell carcinoma whose CT and pathologic stages were available.CT accurately staged 12 of 14 patients with Robson's stage I (86%), 6 of 8 with stage II (75%), 4 of 4 with stageIIIa (100%), 2 of 3 with stage IIIb (67%), and 1 of 2 with stage IV (50%). Overall staging accuracy of CT was 81%(25 of 31). CT failed to differentiate stage I and stage II in 4 cases. CT also failed to diagnose the microscopiclymph node metastasis in 1 case, and invasion of Gerota's fascia in another case. However CT was satisfactory indifferentiating surgically curable stage I to III from surgically incurable stage IV, and high reliable in thediagnosis of inferior vena caval thrombosis. Therefore it is suggested that CT is highly useful in determining thetreatment plan of renal cell carcinoma.

Menetrier' disease is a rare disease characterized, histologically, by epithelial hyperplasia involving the surface and foveolar mucous cells, accompanied by atrophic or normal oxyntic glands of the stomach. The 48 year-old man with epigastric discomfort and peripheral edema was admitted to St. Paul Hospital. Gastrofiberscopic examination revealed extremely thickened mucosal fold in fundus and body especially greater curvature of stomach, and microscopically there was marked hyperplasia of foveolae and cystic dilatation. Serum albumin concentration was decreased and clearance of a1-antitrypsin was markedly increased in the stool, suggesting the protein-losing enteropathy. He was diagnosed to Menetrier's disease and treated with H2 blocker, antacids, diuretics and albumin replacement.

3.p53 Mutations and Microsatellite Instabilities in the Subtype of Intestinal Metaplasia of the Stomach.

To investigate the potential implication of the subtype of intestinal metaplasia in the progression to the gastric carcinoma, we analyzed the mutations of the p53 gene and microsatellite instability (MSI) both in the complete type (type I) and in the sulphomucin-secreting incomplete type (type III) intestinal metaplasia located adjacent to the gastric carcinoma. p53 mutations were observed in 13.3% of type I, in 6.6% of type III intestinal metaplasia, and in 40% of gastric carcinoma. The difference between p53 mutations observed in type I and type III intestinal metaplasia was not statistically significant. No identical mutation of the p53 gene was found in the intestinal metaplasia and carcinoma specimens from the patients. There was no case of intestinal metaplasia showing MSI. In gastric carcinomas, MSI was observed in six cases (40%). The cases harboring BAT-26 instability did not have the mutation of the p53 gene. These data suggest that intestinal metaplasia adjacent to gastric carcinoma, irrespective of its subtype, do not have the genetic alterations as showing in their carcinoma tissues.

5.In vitro Effects of Plant Extracts, and Phytohormones on Mycelial Growth of Anthracnose Fungi.

Water extracts of six plants, such as Allium sativum, A. cepa, Zingiber officinale, Platycodon grandiflorum, Oenanthe javanica, and Capsella brusapastoris, were tested in vitro for inhibitory activity against mycelial growth of anthracnose fungi, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, C. dematium, and C. coccodes. Among the plant extracts, an Allium sativum extract has good inhibitory effects in all the fungi. Four phytohormones namely, IAA (indole-3-acetic acid), NAA (a-Naphthyl acetic acid), 2,4-D (2,4-Dichloro phenoxy acetic acid) and BAP (Benzyl adenine purine) were used to find out the role over mycelial growth of these fungi. All the concentrations of BAP have good inhibitory effect against mycelial growth of these fungi than that of other tested plant hormones.

Twenty plant extracts were tested against mycelial growth, sclerotium formatiom and dry weight of mycelium with sclerotia of Sclerotium rolfsii Sacc. The highest(90 mm) mycelial growth was measured in Adhatoda vasica, Tegetes erecta, Allium cepa, and Curcuma longa. The lowest(25 mm) was in Azadirachta indica. No mycelial growth was found in any concentration of cow, buffalo, and goat urine. The highest(90 mm) and the lowest(15 mm) mycelial growth were measured in Biomil and Urea, respectively. No mycelial growth was observed in Zinc. The highest(60 mm) and the lowest(2 mm) mycelial growth were recorded in Macuprex(Dodine; 65% WP) and Boron(100% Boric acid and 17% Boron) respectively. Mycelial growth was totally inhibited in Rovral(Iprodione; 50% WP).

7.Sawdust Media Affecting the Mycelial Growth and the Fruiting Body Formation of Sparassis crispa.

Six strains of Sparassis crispa such as S. crispa DUM-01, DUM-02, DUM-03, DUM-04, DUM-05, and DUM-06 were tested for their mycelial growth on 6 different kinds of sawdust media and primordial formation on 10 different compositions of larch sawdust media. The highest mycelial growth was recorded on the larch sawdust. Of the 6 strains of S. crispa, S. crispa DUM-04 recorded the favorable formation of primordia. The primordial formation of S. crispa DUM-04 was more favorable on L-3 medium than 9 kinds of larch sawdust media. When S. crispa DUM-04 was cultured on the media of larch sawdust+pine sawdust, the formation of its fruiting bodies was more outstanding on the media of larch sawdust+pine sawdust than those of larch sawdust.

8.Blue Mold of Pear Caused by Penicillium aurantiogriseum in Korea.

The isolation of a causal pathogen from pear fruits showing lesions of blue mold was carried out, which were preserved in the packinghouse of Anseong for the export to the United States. When the lesion of pears (Pyrus pyrifolia Niitaka) was checked in packinghouse, their fruit epidermis over decayed parts varied from light tan to dark brown. Also, the decayed flesh was soft and watery, and separated easily from the healthy tissue. Based on the cultural and morphological characteristics, the fungus (IL-12 isolate) was identified as Penicillium aurantiogriseum. This is the first report associated with blue mold of pear caused by P. aurantiogriseum in Korea.
