1.Central tongue reduction for macroglossia.

Macroglossia can cause dentomusculoskeletal deformities, instability of orthodontic and orthognathic surgical treatment, and create masticatory, speech and airway management problems. To determine whether a reduction glossectomy is necessary, it will important to identify the signs and symptoms of macroglossia. Development of dentoskeletal changes directly related with tongue size, such as an anterior open bite or a Angle Class III malocclusion tendency, would indicate that reduction glossectomy may be beneficial. For reduction glossectomy, several techniques have been reported. However, in most techniques the tip of tongue is removed. So its excision causes the loss of most mobile and sensitive portion of the tongue, and creates ankylosed, globular tongue. To avoid such problems, central tongue reduction technique have been proposed. This article will introduce central tongue reduction for anterior openbite case associated with macroglossia.

3.A Serial Rapist - Male Identification and Crime Scene Analysis in the Cases of a Serial Rapist.

The study presents the application of STR polymorphisms to male identification in the cases of a serial rapist in Korea. Since October 2000 a rapist from Cheongju city (a town located in central district) committed at least 36 rapes. DNA profiles obtained from semen stains, buccal cells and tongue tissue left at the scenes of crime and vaginal swabs of victims gave information that one and the same man had committed all the rapes. The Y-chromosome haplotype (12 loci) obtained was used for the identification process of rapist in mixed genotypes including victim's alleles. The crime scene data were referred from investigating police authorities described the relationship of victim to the offender, victim's age, time and place of sexual assault and rape locations. The behavioural analysis of crime scenes showed more similarities than differences for related crimes. These components were usually assessed in terms of proximity in time and space. Certain crime scene aspects of a serial rapist help identify components of offender spatial behaviour. As a result of this work, future research on the geography of rape and behavioural aspects of rapist will be directed towards those aspects of offences, which have been identified as relevant to the distance between an offender's base, and the site where he approached his victim.

4.Detection of Human Papillomavirus DNA by In Situ Hybridization Using Biotinylated DNA Probes in Codylomata Acuminata.

Human Papillomaviruses(HPVs) are regarded as sexually transmitable and closely associated with precancerous lesions or invasive cancers of the vulva, vagina, and cer V1X. In situ hybridization, besides showing higher sensitivity, allowed the identification of specific viral types. We studied 12 cases of condylomata accuminata for HPV typing by in situ hybridization techenique. Ten cases(83.3 % ) showed positive for HPV type 6/11, and 2 cases(16.7% ) were positive for HPV type 16/18.

5.Three cases of subcutaneous sarcoidosis.

We report herein three cases of subcutaneous sarcoidosis without apparent internal lesion. The patients had multiple subcutaneous nodules on the extremities and abdomen. Hyper-gammaglobulinemia, a relative increase of T suppressor cells, and increased serum angiotensin converting enzyme level and skin anergy were observed. Histopathologic findings revealed sarcoidal granulomas involving the subcutaneous fat tissue. The lesions of two cases resolved spontaneously and the other one case required systemic corticosteroid therapy.

7.The activity of antimelanocyte autoantibodies in vitiligo patients.

Several observation suggest that the antimelanocyte autoantibodies could play a role in melanocyte destruction. Some experiments indicate that melanocyte antibodies from patients with vitiligo can kill melanocyte in vitro. In these experiments, we demonstrated that vitiligo patient's sera containing antimelanocyte antibodies can lyse cultured human melanocytes by complement activation. Melanocyte cytotoxicity was measured using the ethidium bromide/ acridine orange viability assay. Significant melanocyte cytotoxicity was seen in sera from patients with both active and inactive vitiligo(p<0.01). Melanocyte cytotoxicity measured with complement-mediated cytotoxicity decreased after systemic steroid treatment(p<0.05) ; however melanocyte cytotoxicity showed no significant change with systemic PUVA therapy.

8.Congenital self-healing reticulohistiocytosis: report of a case of the solitary type and review of the literature.

A 2-month-old female infant presented with a single hemorrhagic crusted papule on the chin present since birth. No visceral involvement could be demonstrated. The lesion involuted spontaneously with scarring in 3 months. Mononuclear cells in the cutaneous infiltrate were Langerhans cells with typical Birbeck granules which positively stained with S-100 protein. This case is the solitary type of congenital self-healing reticulohistiocytosis.

9.Concerns on Atrophic Gastritis and Neoplasia: Unsafe Perspective.

Proton-pump inhibitors (PPI) have important roles in the management of acid-related disorders, especially gastro-esophageal reflux disease and peptic ulcer disease. They are considered safe, but some side effects, such as oxyntic cell hyperplasia, glandular cysts, hypergastrinemia and fundic gland polyps, are also reported. Long-term PPI administration in Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) positive subjects promotes a shift from antral to corpus-predominant gastritis. The shift leads to corpus atrophy eventually that is known predisposing factor of gastric adenocarcinoma. It is recommended that patients being considered for long-term PPI therapy should be tested for H. pylori infection. And if present, H. pylori eradication should be preceded to PPI administration. Also, long-term PPI administration can cause enterochromaffin-like cell hyperplasia. Although the underlying mechanism and pathogenesis are not yet fully understood, it is possible that long-term PPI administration can promote the development of gastric carcinoid tumor. Therefore, to minimize the side effects, it should be used in adequate dose for a precise duration.

10.Decreasing effect of an anti-Nfa1 polyclonal antibody on the in vitro cytotoxicity of pathogenic Naegleria fowleri.

The nfa1 gene was cloned from a cDNA library of pathogenic Naegleria fowleri by immunoscreening; it consisted of 360 bp and produced a 13.1 kDa recombinant protein (rNfa1) that showed the pseudopodia-specific localization by immunocytochemistry in the previous study. Based on the idea that the pseudopodia-specific Nfa1 protein mentioned above seems to be involved in the pathogenicity of N. fowleri, we observed the effect of an anti-Nfa1 antibody on the proliferation of N. fowleri trophozoites and the cytotoxicity of N. fowleri trophozoites on the target cells. The proliferation of N. fowleri trophozoites was inhibited after being treated with an anti-Nfa1 polyclonal antibody in a dose-dependent manner for 48 hrs. By a light microscope, CHO cells co-cultured with N. fowleri trophozoites (group I) for 48 hrs showed severe morphological destruction. On the contrary, CHO cells co-cultured with N. fowleri trophozoites and anti-Nfa1 polyclonal antibody (1: 100 dilution) (group II) showed less destruction. In the LDH release assay results, group I showed 50.6% cytotoxicity, and group II showed 39.3%. Consequently, addition of an anti-Nfa1 polyclonal antibody produced a decreasing effect of in vitro cytotoxicity of N. fowleri in a dosedependent manner.
