Journal of the Korean Radiological Society 1992;28(2):176-181
When a soft tissue mass in the bony wall of the paranasal sinus is present, it is difficult to make a distinction between tumor and inflammatory mass on CT. Fungal sinusitis may have soft tissue attenuation on the bony wall of the sinus, bony sclerosis, focal bony destruction, and calcific area on CT. This is a report of four proven cases of fungal sinusitis, asperogillosis in 3 cases and mucormycosis in 1 case, All 4 patients had CT and one patient had MRI, On CT, bony sclerosis and destruction were well visualized in all cases. On MRI, mycetoma in the maxillary sinus was hypointense on T1 weighted images and more hypointense on T2 weighted images. Although CT appears to be the best modality for initial examination of the patient with sinusitis, the differentiation of fungal sinusitis from tumor mass or other entity may be better accomplished with MRI.

3.High field strength magnetic resonance imaging of brain lesion.
Journal of the Korean Medical Association 2010;53(12):1086-1092
The primary merit of a 3 tesla (T) magnetic resonance (MR) scanner is the increase in the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). It can offer high spatial and temporal image resolution and its diagnostic potential for brain lesions can be improved at the magnetic strength of 3T. In addition to the increased SNR, strong prolongation of T1 relaxation time at high field MR leads to overall improvements in enhancing lesions versus non-enhancing tissue on contrast-enhanced T1-weighted images and blood versus tissue contrast on time-of-flight MR angiography. Increased chemical shift and susceptibility can improve the spectral resolution in MR spectroscopy and the sensitivities in the micro-hemorrhage detection of gradient echo image, the perfusion change of perfusion MRI, and the blood oxygen level-dependent effect of functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The short acquisition time of diffusion MRI at 3T can decrease motion artifacts in irritable stroke patients and it can be easier to estimate anisotrophy and to increase the efficiency of tractography in diffusion tensor imaging with high numbers of gradient directions. On the other hand, the regulation of the specific absorption rate due to increased radio-frequency energy deposition and the controls for signal loss and increased artifacts at 3T are the main clinical problems. If the drawbacks can be addressed by parallel imaging or pulse sequence changes, 3T MRI can be a useful diagnostic tool and increase the diagnostic accuracy in various brain lesions, such as stroke, trauma, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, dementia, and brain tumors.

Journal of the Korean Neurological Association 1985;3(2):279-284
The paroxysmal kinesigenic choreoathetosis is characterized by choreathetoic, dystonic and/or tonic movements induced by sudden voluntary movements, without loss of consciousness, urinary incontinence and clonic movement. These attacks begin in childhood, and are occasionally familial. The response to anticonvulsants is usually excellent. We present 4 cases of paroxysmal kinesigenic choreoathetosis with a brief review of literature, which is believed to be the first report in Korea.

Investigative Magnetic Resonance Imaging 2017;21(2):102-105
In adolescents, sleep deprivation problem is getting worse, and increased caffeine consumption is considered to relieve the stress caused by sleep deprivation and academic burden. In this study, immediate neurologic effects of caffeine intake on adolescents were evaluated in three high school students using the γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)/creatine ratio on magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). MEGA-PRESS MRS and TE 135 ms single voxel MRS were performed in the anterior cingulate cortex before and after drinking a cup of coffee, which contained 104 mg of caffeine. GABA and creatine were measured on LCModel 6.3, respectively. In all three students, GABA/creatine ratios were decreased after caffeine intake. The GABA/creatine ratios obtained before caffeine intake were decreased after caffeine intake in all the three adolescents. In this preliminary study, caffeine intake caused an immediate decrease in the GABA/creatine ratio in the brain and it may be related to the neurologic effects of caffeine on an adolescent's brain.

7.Effects of Ascorbic Acid on Osteoblast Differentiation in MC3T3-E1 Cells.
Soonchunhyang Medical Science 2013;19(2):93-98
OBJECTIVE: Vitamin C is an essential agent for cell differentiation for cell. However, for osteogenic differentiation a combined medium of vitamin C, phosphoglyceride and dexamethasone is used. Individual effect of vitamin C can be observed in terms of cell growth and proliferation and eventual differentiation to assess the effect of this chemical agent for using as bone growth. This work investigates the dose dependent effect of vitamin C on MC3T3-E1 type pre-osteoblast cell on cell proliferation and differentiation. METHODS: To investigate the dose dependent effect of vitamin C on MC3T3-E1 type pre-osteoblast cell predetermined amount of vitamin C was added to the medium and the medium was used for cell culture and cell differentiation. Relative cell viability and cell proliferation were checked to see the effect of vitamin C. Effect of dose dependent gene expression was carried out by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction with osteogenic differentiation specific genes. RESULTS: Cell viability and cell proliferation was increased in all culture time. The pre-osteoblast cells show significantly higher expression of osteoblast formation specific gene alkaline phosphatase, osteocalcin, and osteopontin at a higher dose of vitamin C. CONCLUSION: Higher doses of vitamin C with 50 microg/uL could significantly enhance the cell proliferation.

The Korean Journal of Parasitology 1970;8(1):25-29
A parasitological study was performed with 452 malaria patients evacuated from South Vietnam by examinations of their peripheral blood. Results were as follows: The peripheral blood examinations revealed that 52.0% of the examined have parasitemia, of which 95.3% was P. falciparum, one case of P. vivax and the other 10 patients were mixed infected. Neither P. malaria nor P. ovale were found. A total of 1,500 thick and thin blood films was prepared and 707 slides of them (47.1%) showed positive. In P. falciparum, ring forms were found most frequently and the next was gametocytes. Eighty slides (50%) showed mixed together with both ring form and gametocytes. All of the erythrocytic stages were seen in three slides of P. vivax. Weekly periodical examinations showed 233.8 parasite density every 1,000 W.B.C count in average, while occasional at fever attacks 531.7.Size of gametocytes in P. falciparum was 9.31(+/-0.89) by 2.16(+/-0.53) in macrogametocyte and 6.61(+/-0.82) by 2.51(+/-0.35) in microgametocyte. Their sex ratio was 100 : 92. Repeated blood examinations showed increased detection rates. The positive rate of parasitemia was 52.0% in single examination, increasing in succession with repetitions.

Korean Journal of Anatomy 1997;30(6):575-580
Brain size is a useful parameter describing ontogenic character and function. Despite its potential contribution to functional study and diagnosis of disease, it has been hampered by poor assessment tools in vivo and postmortem changes. Recent development of medical imaging techniques such as MRI and CT enable us to understand brain structures in vivo. Many morphometirc studies of the brain has given us new insights in the field of functional neuroanatomy and neuropsychiatric diseases. In spite of these advances, volumetric data of normal Korean brain is not available yet. As an initial approach to Korean standard brain size, we measured the cerebellar volume between 20 and 80 years old Koreans. The MRI films free from lesions in brain was analyzed and measured by NIH image program. The Korean cerebellar volume were ranged between 86.2cm(3) and 141.3 cm(3) and average male cerebellum volume was significantly larger than that of female[male : 118.2+/-11.2cm(3)] > female : 108.0+/-9.6cm(3), P=0.1021E-07<0.05]. And we could not find volume change according to aging process. This is the first report on normal Korean cerebellar volume and the presence of gender difference in the Korean cerebellar volume. These data will be used for the standard useful in studying cerebellar function and cerebellum associated disorders in the future.

10.A study on the adaptation of head posture after activator therapy in functional Class III malocclusion patients.
Korean Journal of Orthodontics 1994;24(2):319-329
This study was carried out to research the adaptation patterns of head posture after activator therapy in functional class ill malocclusion patients. For this purpose, 29 functional class III malocclusion patients, from the ages of 8 to 13 years old, were used. 1. Increase in capacity of oral cavity capacity were found in all the samples, but craniocervical angulation were varied into increased group and decreased group after activator therapy. 2. Head posture exhibited the compensatory adaptation in the relative growth increments of the vertical dimension, ALFH and PLFH. 1) A group with more PLFH and less sagittal angle showed relatively small growth increment in PLFH during the treatment period, thus craniocervical angulation was increased. 2) A group with less PLFH and more sagittal angle showed relatively great growth incrmenet in PLFH during the treatment period, thus craniocervical angulation was decreased.
