1.Experimental Induction of Pancreatic Hyperplastic Nodules by Administration of 4-hydroxyaminoquinoline-1-oxide in Rats.
Korean Journal of Pathology 1986;20(2):133-146
Pancreatic hyperplastic nodules were experimentally produced in male Sprague-Dawley rats by single doses of intravenous injection of 4-hydroxyaminoquinoline-1-oxide(4-HAQO), 5 mg, 10 mg, 20 mg and 30 mg per 1kg of body weight. Every ten rats were sacrificed after 1 day, 1 week and monthly until 6 months. Within the first week, pancreatic acini and islets were severely affected with necrosis and the adjacent acinar cells underwent vacuolization. But, pancreatic ductules remained relatively unaffected. The degrees of acinar cell degeneration were proportionally increased as with the increased doses of 4-HAQO administration. The levels of blood glucose and serum amylase were closely corresponding to the light microscopic features of the pancreas. Two months after administration of 4-HAQO, the nongranular acinar cells started to proliferate and their proportion of total acinar cells was 35%, whereas that of control group was 15%, after 3 months the proportion of nongranular cells was decreased. After 6 months, multiple hyperplastic nodules were discovered within the pancreatic acini of all 12 rats, and the largest one measured 500 micro in diameter. Each hyperplastic nodule was uniformly composed of larger cells in two folds of normal cells with hyperchromatic muclei and prominent nucleoli together with a few zymogen granules in their cytoplasms. Ultrastructurally, the cells contained abundant dilated endoplasmic reticulum and markedly decreased zymogen granules. Nuclear heterochromatin became finely dispersed with loss of marginal clumping. During the regeneration process, admixture of islet cells with membrance-bounded granules was identified among the clusters of regenerating acinar cells. On the basis of above findings, the induction of hyperplastic nodules in rat pancreas by 4-HAQO was confirmed, and its histogenesis may reflect a nodular hyperplasia of non-granular acinar cells with potential progress as a neoplastic lesion. And the evidence of the hypothesis that the pancreatic exocrine cells and endocrine cells are in same origin, was presented.

We analysed the ultrasonographic findings in 46 cases of PID, examined atYyonsei Universtiy Severance Yondong Hospital from June 1983 to Dec. 1984. Among them, 29 cases of PID were well correlated with pathologic findings bysurgery or laparascopy. The results were as follows; 1. The age was ranged from 14 years to 57 years of age andthe majority was between 21 years and 50 years of age. 2. We evaluated the ultrasonographic findings of 46 casesunder the criteria of Swayne's classification. They are 67% in type II, 17% in type III and 4% in type I. Theremained is 11% in normal finding. 3. Among 29 cases pathologically proven, the ultrasonographic findings areclassifed to be 66% in type II, 21% in type III, 3% in type I and the remained is normal. Among type II PIDcases, tubo-ovarian abscess is 32%, pelvic abscess is 26% and pyosalphinx is 16%. The pelvic-peritoneal adhesionis demonstrated in 83% of 6 cases of type II lesion. 4. In 36 cases of PID, uterine mass formation is demonstrated and located unilaterally in 64%, associated fluid collection in 47% and bladder indentation in 36% was noted. The diameter of mass shadow is about 4.4cm of average, ranged between 2-9cm. The echogenecity was mixed in 64%, cysticin 31% and solid in 5% of mass lesion.

CT findings of twenty-four patients with adrenal gland tumors were analyzed to evaluate their location, size, shape, density etc. The post-surgical confirmation was made in 17 cases. The findings were as follows: 1. 4-10cmsized tumor messes were most common (42%). 2. Round or oval shaped forme were most common (59%). 3. Functionaltomors were 71% (17/24) including Cushing's syndrome of 10 cases, pheochromocytomas of 6 cases and aldosteronismof 1 case. 4. Abnormal adrenal glands were delineated in 88%(21/24), most effectively by CT. We concluded that CTwas the valuable study in the evaluation of the adrenal gland tumors and in the determination of surgicaloperation.

Journal of the Korean Radiological Society 1992;28(3):424-428
To find any specific radiologic findings of skeletal metastases from hepatocellular carcinoma, we analyzed plain radiographs(n=25), CT(n=16) and MRI(n=5)of 25 patients with metastatic bony lesions from hepatocellular carcinoma. Vertebrae(17/25) and rids(16/25)were most frequently involved and 16 cases showed multiple metastases. The size of the lesions was larger than 5cm in 17 cases. Plain radiographs showed osteolytic destruction(2/25). CT(n=16) showed osteolytic destruction with an isodense expansile mass in all cases. Focal low attenuations suggesting necrosis were found in 2 cases. Calcification within the mass was not detected. MRI(n=5) showed a slight hyperintense area on T1WI and a defimte hyperintense mass on T2WI. After gadopentetate dimeglumine enhancement. The mass showed irregular enhancement. We concluded that skeletal metastatic lesions from hepatocellular carcinoma showed relatively large osteolytic destruction accompanying soft tissue mass and minimum central necrosis.

Korean Journal of Pathology 1998;32(9):680-686
Lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma (LELC) that histologically resembles nasopharyngeal lymphoepithelioma has been reported in various sites including the stomach, salivary gland, lung, skin, thymus, tonsil and uterine cervix. LELC of the stomach was rarely reported after the first report by Burke et al. in 1990. More than 60% of them were associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). Most commonly affecting elderly Asians with slight male predominance (M/F ; 1.2/1), it usually is located in the proximal portion of the stomach and distinguished from lymphoid-rich adenocarcinoma by the absence of definitive glandular differentiation in the LELC. We recently experienced 4 cases of LELC of the stomach associated with EBV. Patients consisted of two Korean females and two Korean males with one in 3rd decade, one in 5th decade and two in 6th decade. The tumors of all cases were located in the proximal portion of the stomach. Gross types were 1 Borrman type I, 2 Borrman type II and 1 early gastric carcinoma type IIc. The size of the tumors varied from 0.8 cm to 7 cm. Microscopic findings were similar in all 4 tumors.; The tumors were composed of syncytial nests of undifferentiated cells having vesicular nuclei with prominent nucleoli, admixed with abundant lymphoplasma cell infiltration in the stroma. Immunohistochemical staining revealed that the tumor cells were reactive for cytokeratin and the stromal lymphocytes were mostly T cells. There were dark hybridization signals in the nuclei of most of the tumor cells but no signals in the stromal lymphocytes in three cases on in situ PCR hybridization and on all cases PCR amplification for EBNA-1. It is concluded that LELCs of the stomach have distinctive histologic characteristics and the usual association with EBV. Further accumulation of these cases will define the prognosis.
