Background and Objectives:
Cigarette smoking is a major risk factor for atherosclerosis.Nicotine, a crucial constituent of tobacco, contributes to atherosclerosis development and progression. However, evidence of the association between nicotine and neointima formation is limited. We aimed to evaluate whether nicotine enhances neointimal hyperplasia in the native epicardial coronary arteries of pigs after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with drug-eluting stents (DES).
Methods:
After coronary angiography (CAG) and quantitative coronary angiography (QCA), we implanted 20 DES into 20 pigs allocated to 2 groups: no-nicotine (n=10) and nicotine (n=10) groups. Post-PCI CAG and QCA were performed immediately. Follow-up CAG, QCA, optical coherence tomography (OCT), and histopathological analyses were performed 2 months post-PCI.
Results:
Despite intergroup similarities in the baseline QCA findings, OCT analysis showed that the nicotine group had a smaller mean stent and lumen areas, a larger mean neointimal area, greater percent area stenosis, and higher peri-strut fibrin and inflammation scores than the no-nicotine group. In immunofluorescence analysis, the nicotine group displayed higher expression of CD68 and α-smooth muscle actin but lower CD31 expression than the no-nicotine group.
Conclusions
Nicotine inhibited re-endothelialization and promoted inflammation and NIH after PCI with DES in a porcine model.
3.Establishing Normative Values for Entire Spinal Cord Morphometrics in East Asian Young Adults

Objective:
The quantitative assessment of spinal cord volume is still in the early stages of development. Recently, normative morphometric values of the cervical spinal cord have been reported. This study aimed to establish normative values for spinal cord morphometry, extending beyond the cervical region to include the thoracic and lumbar spinal cord, and to examine the influence of sex and ethnicity on these measurements.
Materials and Methods:
This prospective study included 28 young, healthy, East Asian volunteers (14 males and 14 females;mean age, 30.14 ± 4.07 years) who underwent spinal cord MRI using a 3T scanner. The cross-sectional areas (CSAs), anteroposterior (AP) and transverse diameters, and compression ratios of the entire spinal cord were calculated. Additionally, the effects of sex and ethnicity on spinal cord volumetry were evaluated, with the influence of ethnicity assessed by comparing the findings with a Caucasian dataset from the PAM50 study.
Results:
The CSAs demonstrated two enlargements at the cervical and lumbar levels. The cervical enlargement at C4–5 exhibited an elliptical shape, while the lumbar enlargement at T12 appeared more circular. The CSAs and AP and transverse diameters of the spinal cords in males were significantly larger than that of females (P < 0.001). The spinal cord compression ratios in East Asians were significantly lower than those in Caucasians (P < 0.001).
Conclusion
This study revealed that the two spinal cord enlargements exhibit different patterns and suggest significant differences in spinal cord morphometric values according to sex and ethnicity.

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a minimally invasive treatment modality used as an alternative to surgery in patients with benign thyroid nodules, recurrent thyroid cancers (RTCs), and primary thyroid microcarcinomas. The Korean Society of Thyroid Radiology (KSThR) initially developed recommendations for the optimal use of RFA for thyroid tumors in 2009 and revised them in 2012 and 2017. As new meaningful evidence has accumulated since 2017 and in response to a growing global interest in the use of RFA for treating malignant thyroid lesions, the task force committee members of the KSThR decided to update the guidelines on the use of RFA for the management of RTCs based on a comprehensive analysis of current literature and expert consensus.

Background:
Serum calcium and magnesium levels are a key factor of the coagulation cascade and may potentially contribute to the pathophysiology of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) expansion. The aim of this study was to attain and sustain target levels of serum calcium and magnesium for three days following admission.
Methods:
A single-blind, prospective, multicenter randomized study was conducted from 2019 to 2022 years, enrolling acute ICH patients aged 18–80 years, with radiological diagnosis and without surgical intervention. Participants were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to either the study group or the control group. In the study group, the target serum levels of calcium (9–10.2 mg/dL) and magnesium (2–3 mg/dL) were actively achieved and maintained for a duration of 3 days following admission. The primary outcome was the expansion of ICH volume within the first 3 days between the study group and the control groups.
Results:
After implementing inclusion/exclusion criteria, 105 of 354 patients remained in the study. There were no significant differences in ICH volume on hospital days 2 and 3 between the groups. Admission factors including Glasgow coma scale score, hemoglobin level, ICH volume, and spot sign showed significant correlations in multivariate analysis. On the third day of hospitalization, admission serum magnesium levels showed a significant correlation with ICH expansion, whereas calcium levels did not.
Conclusion
Admission serum magnesium levels were found to correlate with hematoma expansion in patients with acute ICH. While magnesium itself may not be a direct therapeutic target, it could serve as a valuable indicator for identifying potential therapeutic strategies aimed at preventing ICH volume increase.
